Sailing Ariste from Croatia to Greece in 32 hours
มุมมอง 1663 หลายเดือนก่อน
In August of 2024, we moved our Bavaria 38c from Croatia to Greece. We did not stop on our way to Greece since the only had a two days window of opportunity for this passage. We arrived on Erikousa, one of the little Greek islands on the North, 32 hours later and checked-in on Corfu one day later. I described the check-in process in the video as well as shared our impression from the trip. Enjo...

A riding sail saved us from 35 knots gusts!
มุมมอง 16K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
One of the dangers when you are anchored (especially in windy conditions) is the swing. A few big swings of a boat can cause your anchor to loose the hold, your anchor starts dragging or stops holding your boat completely. Not what you want in the middle of a windy night. A riding sail helps a lot to prevent your sailboat from swinging. Here is our version of a riding sail.

How we replaced the lower rudder bearing on 2005 Bavaria 38C
มุมมอง 3986 หลายเดือนก่อน
This year before starting the sailing season, we made few pretty big repairs and improvements on our Bavaria. This is one of them - replacing the stuck rudder bearing. It took us a little longer than we expected but the result was completely worth it!

Storm in Adriatic Anyone? Or how we ran aground.
So much talent to hold the camera while snowboarding!!!!!
Metal hanks on a polyester rope..wear issue?
Nice. How are you finding it in a busy anchorage with tides swinging boats around?
Consider changing anchor in the first place, the one you have is...hmmm🫤
Yes, I know. :) We replaced the anchor after the accident. We had 15 kg plow and replaced it with 22 kg claw which holds much much better. We got into a pretty heavy storm this year with gusts up to 40-45 and the anchor was slightly drugging, not flying away like the previous one.
What kind (or what type) of insurance do you have and how much do you pay for it? How old is the boat?
We have 2005 Bavaria 38C, we paid yearly about 350 Euro and we had repair coverage something about 20,000 plus the third party liability 1,000,000.
And we moved the boat to Greece after the repair, so we do not know how much the insurance would go up after the claim.
If you wanna ride a storm safely get rid of this stupid bimini that creates such windage your riding sail is useless.
😂
One benefit of having a double ender sailboat (=the back of the boat is sharp) is that you can anchor it from the back. If you have roller furlex you can pull out the front sail a bit (3 feet) and lock it straight and the back of the boat will always nicely point towards the wind. Double enders have other problems but if you anchor a lot then the sharp back is wonderful to have.
It is not comparable because both are eastern Adriatic
What stupid comparasion! Croatia 1800 km coastline and 1244 islands and Monetengro 300 km coastline with hardly any islands.
Exactly, but not everyone knows that. We get this question a lot.
Can't compare them: Croacian coast and islands are perhaps 20 times bigger locations. Montenegro doesn't have islands to speak of, although Gulf of Kotor is fantastic.
Agree, but both are Balkan countries, both are sought after vacation and sailing destinations. This is why our preference is obvious.
Apparently you never heard of a fin delta riding sail. Shaped like a triangle, it keeps you within ten degrees of the wind up to forty knots.
I would suggest a more equallatteral triangle sail, on the backstay connected forward to the boom, just high enough to ½ clear that spray dodger set up you have. The further back, dart vane looking and low the better. As a liveaboard I use this system even on a mooring to increase comfort and reduce the horrible riding up and then falling off dramaticly strain on the rode. The inexperienced will look to you as an idiot of course.
I've been thinking of such a solution and you confirm it's working well. Thanks! With both forward leaches pulled tight to the boom from top and foot fixed to the backstay and aft leach free. Is this also your concept?
Helps if you know what you are doing, before you do a demonstration video.
Couldn’t you just keep quiet?
Perhaps some people learned something.
If your boom is on a track this system could be used to set how you sit to wind. Very useful if the swell is hitting the bow predominantly from slightly off the wind
0:11 - ??? Sarajevo was never part of the Soviet country, but of Yugoslavia. Hope you enjoyed Sarajevo.
I fly my anchor riding sail from the back stay. It's sort of backwards with the head and clew against the backstay raised with the main halyard, sheeted from the tack to either midship cleat. This is my first season trying it and it does reduce the swinging, but I wouldn't swear to it helping the anchor hold. My boat is 33' and from memory, the riding sail dim.s are approx. 2 , 2.5 , 1.5 m.
So you’re trying to mimic a ketch mizzen to stabilise the yacht and steady her on her anchor in a breeze? And it works? All for reusing the head of an old sail and hanking it on to the topping lift? That’s a smart idea if it works 😊
It works very nice, we are happy with the setup :)
If you were in 35 knots you are died.
Why?
We experienced more than 35, but then we needed more than just the riding sail.
Beautiful city, sea , weather
Yes
Would a storm tri-sail set the same way be just as effective?

Yes, you right, Alex wanted to try the installation and got it installed very quick and easy, I was not around to take a video. It's the removal which is usually tricky.

Did you upgrade the wiring on the output from the alternator. Going from 30 amps to 70 is a big step. It's hard to tell from the video but I couldn't see any wires rated for 70 amps there. You would need either 6 or 8 AWG for that depending on the temperature rating of the insulation on the wire.
Very nice 👌 wish it was longer
Looks great!
