"Girl from the North Country" (Bob Dylan) '68 Princeton, Rufini Montefalco, Catalinbread Formula 55
Man . . .I love this Dylan song so much, especially the version from Nashville Skyline. Was happy to see/hear @joe_gore playing this a while back. Stole the swells from him (Sorry, Joe, and mega props to you!).
I promise the story of the Rufini is coming soon. I'm headed to New Orleans this week but hope to get caught up on posting next week. Thanks for your patience.
Many thanks to subscribers, sharers, commenters, and likers (is that a word?) new and old. You are totally keeping me inspired! I'm working on two songs right now in response to comments ("Sleepwalk" and "Calvary Cross"), but this just felt right today.
Next week there'll be a new guitar featured. Get ready!
What brought you here?
If you have any channels to recommend, please do so in the comments. I'd love to check them out. I'm looking forward to sharing some of my favorites soon!

Sorry for the lag in posting this. I try to post weekly, but the holidays have been wonderfully busy. Improvisation on New Year's Eve. Loosely inspired by the wonderful playing of my TH-cam pal Luis (youtube.com/@shoelesshuntersongs2422?si=D_sAqA35TL_ZxO_A). Check out his channel! One of the best (and saddest) Christmas tunes, by one of my heroes. I think I'll record this every year. I'm getting to know my Rufini Montefalco better and better all the time. It makes me sound more like me, for better or worse. I used to be scared of guitars like this-that's probably why I've only owned Strats for short periods of time. They accentuate my flaws as a guitar player. This one d...

In response to subscriber comments, I've recorded a clip of the JMJM, played through my new PRRI. I do indeed love this guitar, even if it's playing second fiddle to the Rufini at the moment. Man, I sure think this amp sounds good! It's turned up to about 4 here. Some people have reported rattle with this model when it's turned up. I had a bit of that, but tightened all the screws and there's n...

Gary Lee Etherton (1. November 1940 - 19. December 2014). I used to be a singer and lyricist, but for the past bit I've just wanted to play the guitar and try to say things with it. Lyrics don't seem to come too easy these past years, but I'm grateful that I have a guitar to pick. This song is for my old man, my dear daddy. I miss him every day and just started talking to him again recently. He...

"I aint gonna fuss and I aint gonna moan, just because my baby done gone, cuz I"ve got a woman in the Cleveland Yard . . ." Well, you commented and advised and I happily followed along. I couldn't quit playing this amp, even with the Victoria sitting next to it. In the end, this amp simply felt better. Pretty crazy, considering I'd never considered getting a '68 PRRI. I've played a host of '65 ...

If you know me, you know that Neil Young is one of my all-time favorites. This song in particular has long meant much to me. It's a clumsy and peculiar rendition, but maybe that's fitting. This is for my dear old friend Bernhard. I wish we could ride together through the western wastelands. Playing through a Princeton Reverb, no effects, just the amp's reverb and vibrato. I hope you enjoy! Don'...

Nice! Keep it up! 👍❤
Thanks so much, @DelusRawks ! I'll do my damndest to do so! :)
Yeah!! 'Nashville Skyline' was great!
Totally! Hard to pick a favorite, but that’s up there with John Wesley Harding!
Happy New Year! "What brought you here?" I was initially drawn by the Princeton! After getting myself one (not an FSR though) I wanted to see how other people play through theirs. I heard something unique through your playing and decided to follow your channel. "Any tunes you'd like to hear?" I'm planning on attempting a version of Sleepwalk as seen on a lesson by Ted Greene. I don't know if and when I will be able to upload it but I would love to see it played by someone with your passion and feel. Keep it up! Adam
Wow, Adam! Thanks so much for the kind words and for your responses. I danced around getting a Princeton for years and am super happy to have found one. I initially planned on getting the '65, but fell in love with the one I have. Listening to gear demos is how I've found some of my very favorite TH-cam players and channels. And now, thanks to you, I'm stoked: I have a Ted Greene lesson to add to my list. I love "Sleepwalk" and am looking forward to hearing you play it! I'll try to learn it myself. Next up on the list is a song by Richard Thompson. Have you heard R.J. Ronquillo's cover of "Sleepwalk"? th-cam.com/video/oITs2N4khfs/w-d-xo.html Happy New Year to you as well! May it be a good one . . .
Love it, Ross. Many thanks for your remark about this guy Luis. If you ever get critized about your stuff, you can always blame it on the moonshine, or blame it on the boogie, or blame it on the Shoeless Hunter : )
Thanks, buddy! If my picking is ever the object of criticism, I'm definitely pointing the finger at the Shoeless Hunter. 😂😂 Have a great day.
Sublime. Beautiful job.
Thank you for the kind words and for listening! Wishing you a happy 2025!
Great tone! What pickups do you have in the Rufini?
Thank you very kindly! It has goldfoil PAF Alnico 8 Valenti pickups in it-they're a custom builder out of Italy. I'd never heard of them before, but sure do like them. They are super sensitive and amplify all my mistakes! :)
Love this tune
Thank you! :)
Beautiful, miss my dad everyday!
It never goes away, but I figure that's a good thing and a testament to good lives lived!
Sounds great!
Thank you for the compliment! :) I'll keep 'em coming!
Very tasteful playing of the versatile JMascis which i recently bought.
Thank you for your kind words! I hope you are happy with your JMJM-will you keep it as is or do you plan on changing some things? All my best, Ross
@retherton at the moment I will keep it as is - don't actually like gold coloured things so the pickguard might have to change. I am aware of upgrades I could do but this poor guitar player is happy with the instrument 😀
ps I wish you a restful & musical Xmas & a Happy & creative New Year. 🦘
Thank you, my friend! And the same to you!
Glad you like yours! They are great out of the box. I have a mint pickguard for mine, but have yet to put it on. Maybe someday! :) Happy playing to you!
It's a lovely instrument and amp, and you make them sing beautifully.
Thank you for your kind words and support! I promise to keep the tunes coming!
Fond memories of playing this song with you my friend.
And I with you, good buddy!❤️
Beautiful bro! Love the cat cameo also.
And I know what an important song this is for you. Loving this fresh take.
The cat adds to it!
Thanks, brother!
As someone who has the JMJM it is nice to hear something a bit more creatively left field from it.
Oh, man! Thank you so very kindly. That means a lot! I've got to do some more work with the Grand Canyon-I feel like I've not really unlocked it yet.
Nice to hear gentle tones from the JMJM.😊
Thanks! I'm glad that this track is getting some love. :) "Nebraska" has long been a favorite album of mine. And I love the spectrum of tones one can get out of a Jazzmaster. I was thinking about selling mine, but now you've got me rethinking it! :)
@retherton I think you are convincing yourself ! best wishes 😺
Very beautiful!
Thank you so much! That’s very kind of you. I’ll try to keep ‘em coming! All the best, Ross
beautifull!
Oh, man! Thank you so much for the kind words. I'll try to keep 'em coming!
Beautiful and moving, I’ll have this on repeat. And then I read the description and it hits even harder.
Thanks, dude. Means a lot.
Sweet and quiet. This guitar is a keeper
Thank you so much, Luis! I’m totally loving this guitar.
My man. Do Calvary Cross by Richard Thompson!
@ckloewer As always, you know my musical heart. How did I never hear this gem of a song (and record!)!?!?! I'll do my damndest, my friend.
I love Jazzmasters. I have one. Love your playing. Just subscribed and Liked.
Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing! I had never much thought about Jazzmasters, but heard Tobias Hoffmann from Vintage Guitar Oldenburg play one and was immediately smitten. I just pulled this one out the other day and remembered why I like it. :) What kind of JM do you have? I'll have to make a video with this one again, as hard is it may be to put my Rufini down!
@@retherton I have a 2003 AVRI 62 Jazzmaster I bought new back in 2003. AVRI are American made. It's a great guitar. I look forward to your next Jazzmaster video.
L had a nice time listening to you, Ross. Thanks
Thank you, Luis!
Beautiful tone! Buy it;)
Thanks, man! As a matter of fact, I just did!
Tone is superb. Love that Ruffini. Any chance you’ll do a video about it?
Thanks, @deaconddd! I fully love the Rufini! Thank you for asking . . . I think I will indeed do a video about it. Stay tuned--I'll try to record it next week. :)
So glad you’re enjoying that Princeton! Truly a divine pairing with your Rufini.
Thank you, Carol! It doesn’t hurt that they look pretty fetching together. 😊
Different vibrato and bridge?
Thanks for asking! Yes-it has a German ABM roller bridge and a Fender AVRI tremolo. I've been very happy with both. All the best to you, and thanks for watching. :)
Keep that thing goin' !
I think I might! 🙂 Have a great day, amigo!
Love it!
Thank you so much!
thats really nice!
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. I really appreciate it and am glad you enjoyed it! :) Stay tuned for more!
nice mate . I just put the same pick ups in mine they sound great. Over christmas while on holidays im gunna try some 500 k pots to see how they sound . These are really great guitars its the guitar in my collection that im modding it doesnt really need it but i enjoy playing around with this guitar
Thanks, bud! I’ve totally lived this guitar, and the mods make it even better! Do you have the stock bridge and trem still? Good luck with the future mods and thanks for watching! I’ll have to make some more JMJM vids soon. 🙂
@ bridge is still there. I swapped the trem for a fender one . Next is the pots . They are a great value guitar . I’ve got more expensive guitars but it’s like my daily driver that I want to get naturally get road worn and mod it . Cheers
Tone for days!
More to come, hopefully with less background buzz from the 6V6s!
1:29 Campilongo! (or can't be long now, as he used to joke) Nice of you, to record on such a day. Kudos for the Victoria. So you did cheat on the Ampeg? Time marches on, and I'm digging 'dry' sounds as I grow older and older. Give it a try, if you must. Give the raw thing a try. Just an idea from a friend
Thank you, dear Luis! Love the over-the-nut bends. Cheating on the Ampeg, but don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I might indeed try the "raw thing" on coming recordings-it makes sense.
Nice sounds, bravo!
Thank you so much! More to come soon… waiting on a new amp… the Gemini is crapping out. 😢
Superb, really like your bending working with some microtonal notes
Thank you so much for the kind words, @FelipeFerreira-ew5dj ! Much of that sound is just this excellent guitar . . . it is so wonderful and sensitive. I'm very much trying to slow down and play with more tenderness. I love players like Jim Campilongo who can really stretch their bends out. Who are you enjoying listening to right now?
wonderfull
Thank you for the kind words @mattobenvenuto! Cheers from Ohio! What are you listening to right now?
@@retherton hello ! Mick Turner! th-cam.com/video/yQQGyE10oDE/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! Totally love this and somehow never heard it . . . Very familiar with Dirty Three and the stuff he did with Will Oldham. Have a great day!
a 4am in the morning wake up song for an old man's pee break...😎
Haha! At least you woke up for the break-it's worse when you sleep through. :)
Gold foil pickups?
It certainly looks like it, but I'm not sure. They are unlike any other pickups I've played-super, super sensitive and dynamic but not overly growly. I'll do some research and let you know!
Good Guitar, Happy Man
So stoked! As a wise man once said, "Guitars come and go . . ." I might have this one for a while. :) Have a good day, amigo!
@@retherton Wise! 😅 The same to you, Ross. Keep it. I sure looks nice!
Beautiful! The guitar and your cover of the song! What color is the guitar? Powder blue?
Thanks, rhettmarty! Yes, a very mellow powder blue. More videos to come . . .stay tuned1

Thanks so much, my friend! Keep it rolling! ❤️
Hell yeah

Chimney Rock!
Yes indeedy!
Ross: Recommending stuff to other people is something one does at a risk, but let me suggest watching Tobias Hoffmann (especially when he plays Jaguars!). I think you might like it. Good luck with your Nash business!

Love it. Adding this one to my "work" playlist... miss you bro!
Thanks, man! Miss you, too. Was just thinking about you this am!

You know . . . Always makes me think of you. (heart!)
Many thanks for the quote, Ross. Very kind of you! Nice song. Worth to listen to! I'm not a Gemini user, but my few last electric clips are played through a '65 Ampeg Jet 12. Good luck with the Denison job!
My pleasure, amigo! Thanks for your kind words in return. I love those old Jets . . . And thanks for the good wishes.
nice one, thanx
Thanks a ton! Stoked that you enjoyed. 😊
I keep coming back to this. I melt from the first note after the big muff kicks in.
Thanks, man!
Nice, man. Isnt the canyon like one of the 10 best pedals of the last 10 years? For the cost, its incredible how many good sounds it will give you.
Thanks! I totally agree with your opinion of the Grand Canyon. I debate getting rid of it now and then, but I always hold on to it. I love that it's easy to work with right out of the box, AND that I'm still figuring out how to coax new sounds out of it. The best part for me (and the reason why I haven't gotten a DL-4) is the robust looper functions. Being able to record a loop with one delay and then overdub with another is a major plus. Do you have a looper pedal that you use, or do you just use the Grand Canyon? I also use a Boss VE-8, which I only really like due to the big buttons. :)
Man sits with guitar, an entire universe unfolds.
You are too kind…
