Sius: Prim Verta - Blake Grizzle
An original theme I composed for a character in a friend's novel. The character, Sius, is known as the Prim Verta, or elder brave. He's known for being protective of his tribemates and I wanted to capture that heroic nature in this piece. He's also a skilled archer, known by the name "Whispering Arrow," hence the arrow sound effect. I'm pleased with this one, and I hope you enjoy it as well.
Fun fact: This was composed while I was on vacation. All I had was my macbook and my Roland Fantom, so I used a subset of my main libraries. The restriction of not having access to everything forced me to focus more on using what I had.

A theme composed for a friend based on a world they are building. The style initially requested was a regal and heroic sound akin to that of Jurassic Park by John Williams. Effects are from the Hydrasynth except for EQ and dynamic effects applied afterwards.

    Hi, I was wondering if in the logic project you demonstrated in airstudioreverb, did strings use css? How do you set up the microphone? I feel that my css is a different sound than my own, yours is closer to the sound of the instrument record, and each of my strings sounds mushy together, my English is not particularly good, thank you

    There's so much more under the bonnet of this plugin, and sounds fantastic if you know what you're doing. It's great and importat that you can adjust the EQ on each instance, brlliant piece of kit. It puts the instruments in the room and makes them come alive. Worth every penny. 8Dio choirs, Adastra, Majestica, and Soundpaint libraries, Noire, Woodchester Piano, Midnight Grand, all sound fantastic. Of course, the danger is not to create a space within a space. Close mic's need to be backed off a bit within the orchestral plugins. After all, players instruments do not come with their own built in reverb, do they!

    A good video, but you forgot one thing: Using only close mics with IRs always doesnt sound very good. You need to get a fair mix between Tree and Close to get a somewhat "good" sound, im not a big fan of IRs, only for tails its somewhat usable. I always prefer working with the room tone a library already has, except if the rome tone is completely different to a library i would like to use alongside.

    This might be a good piece of software but what Spitfire does not understand is that it does not fit with their original approach of focusing on recording their libraries very wet, within the particular hall they chose. While other companies, such as VSL especially, but also others like Audiobro, Cinematic Studio Series to name a few have chosen smaller, more direct sound. These libraries become the perfect candidate to be properly processed later with any reverb of your choice much easier and sounding more natural. With that being said, Spitfire have put themselves into a corner. You can’t expect under any circumstances to take a close mic recording which captures all the detail of a close proximity that you would otherwise never hear and stick that into a convolution reverb (or any reverb for that matter) expecting it to sound natural. It will not. It is fundamentally wrong from a recording perspective, mixing perspective, listener perspective, you name it. You need a source that is free of detail, has natural tone that can only be captured from a further distance. Don’t believe me? Try sticking your ear right next to a playing guitar or piano or any instrument. Stay at around one foot away but not more with one ear pointed at the source and shut your other one with your hand. This is what a single close mic “hears” too. It will be unnatural as it will lack the detail that our brain will always look for to determine certain information that defines a source. In recording theory spot mics have always been used as an additional source that can be gently blended into and not used as a main source of information. That’s not how our hearing works. Thank you for demonstrating this product additionally to what Spitfire is trying to show us!

    • @thegrizzledmusician
      @thegrizzledmusician 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, I’ve made similar observations over the years. That’s exactly why i made sure to use CSS’s main mic as well. Unless I just really liked the sound or was going for something stylistically, I would not use a close mic + reverb for the reasons you described. It’s generally just unnatural sounding. I knew people would be curious what close + reverb sounded like so I included it. Thanks for the detailed comment!

      @thegrizzledmusician 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it is a somewhat different sound for sure. It’s hard to test them because the tree mics in spitfires libraries are so wet but I did run the close mics of SSO through this and compared with all mic positions on and no reverb. The tail on this sounds longer. It sounds like the same room just recorded differently, which considering how I’m having to test it makes sense.

      @@TemmeSikkema in every sense, when it comes to orchestral reverb centered in film music Altiverb, Valhalla and even EW Spaces have been doing it for so long that you are able to actually use their engine and its algorithm to get a truly realistic sound. Not to mention that with Altiverb and EW you get different halls as opposed to this one that is $350 for just Air Studios when, of course this place is amazing but, it is not by any means the only soundstage we used to record film orchestras. Hopefully they are able to down the line create a more complete bundle and truly make it worth the investment. I would advise anyone to pay this kind of money for one hall. Although I realize Altiverb is $900, EW Spaces is $199 go grab a copy of that instead!

      Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. Mixing an algorithmic and convolution reverb together is a pretty common practice in orchestral mixing. I run two because I feel that both of them together make up for the deficiencies each technology inherently has. Algorithmics generally have more movement, while convolutions sound more realistic imo. Mixing them together gives you both flavors. Just comes down to what you like. This is an m1 Mac Mini. I haven't really gotten to test the CPU usage with multiple instances as of yet.

      @@thegrizzledmusician It appears you have both reverbs set up as sends. Are you at some point sending both your dry signal and the convolution reverb through Cinematic Rooms, or are you keeping them separated. Not sure how well the convolution reverb interacts with the algorithmic one. It also appears that when selecting 'The Hall' preset, it moves the player positioning all the way up to the front at full width. Wasn't sure how the positioning would effect the dry signal depending on if your using the plugin as a send or an insert. I'm just assuming it works similar in concept to the positioning in Altiverb or MIR.

    • @thegrizzledmusician
      @thegrizzledmusician 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kmahonchakThey are separate. First time I saw two verbs being used in this way was the spitfire reverb shootout videos with Jake Jackson and I’ve been experimenting with it ever since. Sometimes I run one, but I run two often and find I like it. The hall preset has a large polygon as its shape which I show toward the end. So it’s approximating the sound coming from a large area of the floor to capture the full orchestra at the point of where the decca tree is.

    Hey grizzled musician, I recently discovered your channel and have found it sooo helpful! I am wanting to upgrade from a MacBook Pro 2015 and am hoping to pick up up an M3 MacBook pro Max and am trying to decide between the 36GB 14 core option, vs 48GB with 1TB SSD. I was initially wondering if the 36GB might be a bit tight for use with sound libraries, but now seeing you run a Mac mini with 16GB, I am now not so sure that 48GB is necessary. My main main Daw is Logic Pro and I am hoping to get some of the spitfire and East west Sample libraries. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you😄

    • @thegrizzledmusician
      @thegrizzledmusician ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! While I do sometimes do projects on the Mac mini by itself they are usually smaller and less traditional. 16GB is usable..but not optimal, even on Apple silicon. East West and Spitfire’s libraries are also, unfortunately, extremely memory hungry. One violin legato patch in Hollywood Orchestra will take up over 1GB alone. 32GB is the minimum I’d recommend for a new machine in 2024. The more you get, the more you future proof yourself and you will get longer usable life out of your machine. It is ultimately up to you how much that’s worth in terms of what you are willing to spend. If you are willing to have tracks disabled and only enable them when you need them and be mindful about turning on a bunch of mic positions, 32GB would serve you fine. If you want to have more things loaded and ready, you’ll likely run into some trouble. Just for context, I run a VE Pro setup for my orchestral stuff now. Between the Mac mini and the windows PC I built to run as the server I have a total of 96GB. For any one project I usually run anywhere from 50-75% of that being utilized. I always run multiple mic positions though so it could be a lot less if you are willing to just use tree mics. Hope that helps!

    • @riasure
      @riasure ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey@@thegrizzledmusician ,thank you so much for your advice and the information you provided. Seriously, it has has been invaluable and I also just watched your video on why you switched to Vienna Strings Pro and now it makes sense as to how you were able to make it work with the Mac mini with just 16GB in conjunction with the pc you built! I am def. now going with as much RAM as I can possible afford think 64GB might be the sweet spot and should allow me to future proof. Another consideration is the SSD size. I have now ruled out 1TB, as I visited East West website and one of their libraries is like almost one TB!!! I would ideally like to store as much of my sounds on the internal SSD drive and I have heard many who work with sample libraries recommend at least 2TB or even better 4TB. Would you agree? Thanks again and I am glad to have stumbled across your channel, I feel like I have already learnt a great deal from watching your content. 😄👍🏾.

    • @thegrizzledmusician
      @thegrizzledmusician ปีที่แล้ว

      Very glad you have found it helpful! As far as storage goes, yes 1 TB doesn’t go very far with some of these libraries. My Mac mini is a 256gb model and I use 3 external drives. 2 are Samsung ssds that total 3TB and one is a 4TB hard drive that I use for my lesser used libraries. For studio use I prefer external ssds for two reasons. First is they are cheaper than paying what Apple charges for more storage. Second is if the worst happens and your computer crashes or needs an os reinstall you don’t have to redownload your libraries which saves time reinstalling. If you are using a laptop portably it’s a bit different because external drives are a pain to lug around but id personally probably still use one. If you want to use the internal storage then the same thing applies as RAM, the more you get the more room you have to grow, but being able to add external drives makes storage not as important to me. Hope that helps!

    • @riasure
      @riasure ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thegrizzledmusician yes,you have really been a great help and I am very grateful. Based on your what you have advised and from my own research I can see that those libraries are vast. I agree, lugging external drives about with a laptop isn’t always ideal, but they are a good workaround I guess. So I am going to go as high as the budget will allow for both RAM and SSD. I will be watching more of your videos especially re. sample libraries you are using/recommending etc.. I have not stumbled upon very much content that covers this area of composition that I am very interested in. So thanks for the gems you are imparting, they are invaluable.
