"Luxurious" winter backpacking? | Allegheny National Forest
Join me on a solo overnight snowy winter backpacking trip on the Minister Creek Trail in the Allegheny National Forest in western Pennsylvania. I brought a lot of what backpackers consider "luxury items" to make it as comfy and cozy and as full of ambiance as possible.
Thanks for watching :)

My no-build Honda Element car camper conversion + a peaceful fall camping vlog
มุมมอง 2.1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
Yes, I'm a card-carrying member of the Honda Element cult. After several long roadtrips sleeping on the floor and having no real storage to speak of, I decided to put together an easy, cheap, and removable no-build solution for car camping. Then, I took her for a spin to camp at the Red Creek Campground in the beautiful Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia. Thanks for watching! Here's what I ...
Bikepacking solo for the first time ever | cycling across Ohio on the OTET
มุมมอง 28Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I survived my first ever bikepacking & camping trip alone on the Ohio to Erie Trail (OTET). And it was an incredible adventure. I rode from Cincinnati to Cleveland in five days while camping 3 out of the 4 nights I was on the trail. I also rode my first ever century (100 miles!) with loaded packs. I encountered some struggles both mental and physical along the way, but at the end of the day it ...

Hey y'all! In this video I make my last stop on my roadtrip tour of all 4 Colorado national parks: Rocky Mountain National Park! I stay at an incredible walk-to campsite in the Aspenglen Campground, do some scary mountainside driving on Trail Ridge Road, see a ton of wildlife, and hike to the stunning alpine lake Sky Pond. Hey y'all! I'm Alexandra, a photographer and solo adventure lover from Pittsburgh. In this video I continue my round-Colorado road trip with a stop at the Blue Lakes Trail area. I spend a night boondocking in my Honda Element, and then head off to hike the trail, which was absolutely breathtaking!

I always wish I had more time, but in this video I made the most out of less than 24 hours to spend in Mesa Verde National Park. I took a ranger-guided tour of the Cliff Palace dwelling, took some beautiful drives, explored more relics from the Ancestral Pueblo people, hiked to see some incredible Petroglyphs, and camped in my Honda Element at Morefield Campground. 00:00 Intro 00:15 Love letter...

    I was thinking you needed trekking poles even before you mentioned them. Micro spikes would give you more traction in snow and ice too. I used them my first time this year and loved them.

    That shoe holder is a great choice. I gotta have stuff where I can see it, or I get frustrated looking for it. I have an '05 Element, so my seats are like yours. Apparently they slide further forward than the newer Elements.

      Ah, you don't have an interior release for your rear hatch either. I need to put one in. I would be so nice to just go right out the back instead of flopping around trying to get out of the front.

      Kinda sad how we get out doing the thing we've dreamed of doing, and then in the moment we don't enjoy it. For me sometimes I just need to eat. And sometimes I think I'm just lonely. It def happens way more when I am solo than when I am with my wife.

    Lovely content!! Thank you for sharing. Would a hammock tent type of thing be smaller and easier to pack and transport? I've seen some content about ultra lightweight backpacking gear and I saw one on there. Might be worth a little research.

  • @Sahxocnsba

    Maybe a smaller tent next time if you can find one that fits/packs down smaller since youre one person. Unless youre on a trip with another person and one of you carries the tent. Not sure how much smaller it can get but would make that packing easier. I think you did well though, only thing i'd add is first aid, gauze, tourniquet etc. Ive seen some nasty injuries from just biking on an open trail or road. A tourniquet takes up minimal space and could save your life, or limbs.

    What resources did you use to plan? I want to do this with my kiddos. I know they can manage the distance but my six year old would appreciate 50 mile days vs 100 miles days 😂

    • @AlexandraVenture
      @AlexandraVenture 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I used a mix of a lot of things. There’s a really active Facebook group (Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail / Ohio To Erie Trail Enthusiasts Group) where people often post their itineraries and you can ask questions/get advice. I used the map and planning tools on the website (ohiotoerietrail.org). They have a list of lodging options organized by town. And then I’d also just search Google Maps for camping options and looked on Hipcamp. I watched just about all the TH-cam videos of other peoples’ trips that exist. And then making a pretty unorganized Google doc as I was putting together my itinerary so I wouldn’t forget the options I had found. I’m sure other people have more streamlined processes. But it was kinda like putting together a puzzle! But I think days of 50 miles or fewer is more the norm than doing 100 mile days! So you’ll definitely be able to put together a more kid-friendly ride!

    I attempted the OTET in 2023 but had to stop at Xenia due to bad weather and some mental stuff. I think I pushed myself too hard mileage wise. I did a reroute and extended a day with the new first site being constitution park. Would you recommend it? I know it was hard being kinda out in the open by the road but I also don’t wanna sleep in some random park in Xenia

    Great simple no-build build!! How did you sleep? I noticed you flipped around, figured that was because of the slope of the vehicle. I have a no-build build as well and love the simplicity of it all. I also feel much safer on my solo adventures in a car vs a tent. Love your content, just found your channel. 😊

      @AlexandraVenture 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I slept super well! It was honestly even more comfortable than I expected. But yeah, I did end up flipping cause I realized when I laid down I was on more of a slope than I thought! And the safety aspect is huge for me too. I love tent camping, but I do sleep MUCH better knowing I'm safely locked in a vehicle.

    Thanks for the trip down memory lane. When I did my second through-ride I, too, stayed overnight in Constitution park for my first overnight. It was a holiday weekend and the last car left the parking lot around 10:20 I think. I also felt I was exposed but then I figured I had my bear spray next to me and had to put my trust into fellow humans and just went to sleep I think the last visitor was sometime around 11:45 or so - a motorcyclist who stopped to use the porta-potty and smoke and then departed. I woke early and headed into Xenia McDonald's to get some breakfast as well. Ride on!

    Pleased to see that these long distance trails exist as we don't have anything like this in Australia. Cycling outside the Sydney metro area is dangerous as drivers are less accustomed to cyclists on the road.

    • @AlexandraVenture
      @AlexandraVenture 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's interesting because broadly speaking I've always had the perception that America is much less bike-friendly than many other countries. This trail definitely is a gem though, and there are several others similar to it. Though there are also definitely huge swaths of the country where it's similar to what you're describing--your only option is fast highways where drivers aren't looking out for cyclists.

    This is what I may never understand. Why does anyone ever have anxiety? Now yes I get it as well so I understand the feeling. But when you trust that your life will be whatever it is supposed to be. Why worry about anything? I believe that my life was mapped out for me well before my great grandparents were even born. So this anxiety that you need to be on high alert, just does not make sense. If you're supposed to be Liam neeson taken then that's what is going to happen. If you're supposed to pass away from a heart attack that is what will happen. If you're supposed to live to be 94 and ride your bike till the day you die. Then that is what will happen. Literally none of this life is in your control.

      So it became necessary, but not because of the camp sites necessarily. I got delayed a day starting my trip but had to finish on the same day. So I had to combine 2 days to stay on schedule. I originally planned to stop in Galloway and have my ride be 6 days instead of 5.
