Referee on the Water. At the start, the referee on the water needs to be standing and ready at 2 min. Know the crew names and lane assignments. At start position launch at about 20 meters from boats. Correct as needed to limit wake for trailing boats. To correct boats: White flag up, CREW NAME, instruction and drop flag to match instruction.

Checking bow balls, foot stretchers, and athlete credentials is a critical component of the Control Commission. Shoes should allow for easy exit from the boat in the event of a capsize. Bow balls must be firmly affixed to prevent injury in the event of a collision. Credentials are important to maintain a record of the crews that have launched, are on the water, or have returned to the dock.

Cox'n and Light Weight rowers must be weighed before an event. Posted weigh in window times are strictly adhered to. Scales are calibrated. Records are maintained with information transferred to registration, start, referee on the water, and finish marshal.

The Judge at Start is the only referee who can call a false start. The Aligner is critical, working with the stake boat holders to assure all boats are lined up for a fair start, and communicating alignment with the Starter using the white or green flag.

Boat Weight Procedures - It is critical to weigh boats using a calibrated scale, with the athlete in attendance. Boats should be emptied of all contents except those approved by the Rules of Rowing. If boat is underweight, re-calibrate scale, re-weigh, and have athlete/coach sign off on weight.
