About Rice Field Records
I'm an American and when I first came to Japan, I lived in a seaside town in Okayama Prefecture in western Japan. Since 2023, I have been living in Saitama Prefecture, a commuter area of Tokyo. I mainly collect records of British and American blues, rock, soul, jazz, zydeco, etc. from the 1960s onwards.
Recently, I have been introducing various types of record stores on TH-cam, from newly opened stores in Tokyo to long-established record stores with a long history, specialized record stores for jazz, Latin, punk, and classical music, to world-famous superstores in Tokyo. Please refer to the link details and locations in the video description.

The Stones upstaged nobody, they’re not even in the same league as James Brown and the Flames.
It was Brown who caught the Stones by surprise; not the other way around. Look it up. Plenty of authors covered this over the decades.
I think this is an only in Tokyo store. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully I can visit that area
You are correct. SUBstore is Tokyo only. There is another independent venue in Koenji that serves food, has music events and sells records; and that place is named Uptown Records. Cheers!
cant wait to check this place out. not sure if i am more excites about the food or the records
Im coming for VHS night. Shout out for Tyrone Davis, 8:32
I'm going for the Crazy Rice on the menu !
Can't wait to visit all the Koenji stores you have highlighted.
You're going to love it!
Another great independent record store+. I really enjoyed seeing the art and other random stuff decorating the walls.
That large drawing by Pushed was incredible. You could see how strongly worked the graphite was in to the paper. I love those sorts of salon style hangings in a space. Especially in a stairwell. Of all the places I’ve been visiting for videos, Koenji is my favorite. Every one has been a unique standalone statement. There are no large record store chains in Koenji.
He said, "I like bookshops too much." That's unpossible!
I loved that line. He’s kinda like you. You like turntables too much!
What a great guy! I'd buy stuff from him just to support him. So great!
I’m going to go have dinner there sometime this year. Maybe order the crazy rice.
Such a nice guy with a really good vibes in his “living room” space. Great job Michael.
He was such a pleasure to work with! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
You know I like American roots music . . . so I prefer the Whitlock songs. The Ronnie Lane song is also strong.
Wish there was many more videos of this talent guy
Nice selection !!! CAN !!!!!!
I always visit Shop Mecano here every time I dig in Nakano. He always has some 80's/New Wave/Post-Punk stuff you don't see anywhere else. Great video.
@@Mfidelity I might have mentioned this to you before, but you should check out Be-In (Koenji), Vinyl (Nishi Shinjuku) and Darumaya (Ikebukuro). They have great inventories of non-Japanese pressings if you are seeking those the next time you visit Japan. Cheers!
@@ricefieldrecords I'll check them out on my next trip in April. Thanks.
Yet another Tokyo record store with a great usp. Nakano-San I'm sure has plenty of great stories to tell.
@@mikevinylspiral I hope to visit him again very soon. “usp” as in unique selling proposition? Definitely. Foreigners flock to his store. I’ve seen it.
Some good and well curated stuff. Interesting man as well. 👍🏻
@@Grooverski Yes, I was very fortunate with this fellow. He was very collaborative and fearless. Often times the owners do not want to go on camera.
@ Happy Holidays Michael
Great Video !
@@Z-eb I knew you’d like this one. I have additional footage of Kraftwerk and Can CD’s I may work into something else.
@@ricefieldrecords Do it !!
Thank you! I tried to visit this store last week but I arrived outside of his opening hours. It's great to see inside and hear his story.
@@stixxaus5373 Have you checked out the TH-cam channel, The Long Gone Rock Loser Show? He is an Aussie who comes to Japan every year for shows and record hunting. He documents everything and is fearless with his camera. Check him out.
@ricefieldrecords yes I have, thanks.
I remember being there when Richard T. Was sound man ..
Sure miss my brother "RICH"
How fun. There is no space to small in Tokyo for live music.
This event was a delight!!
Another excellent vlog!! Thank you 🙏🔥🔥
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Keroyama has a new fan! That dude is a blast! Thank you so much for filming this event! And thank you for zooming in on the records. So much fun!
@@BeaSides Look for a short from me later in the week featuring Keroyama and a track from Klaus Nomi. I could not include it in this video because of content owners; but the short feature opens things up for these sorts of things. Suffice it to say he comes out into the room and dances with the audience and it’s fantastic. I had so much fun making this piece, I can’t tell you. They are all dipping into history and playing rare international stuff. It’s so refreshing.
@@ricefieldrecordsI’ll be there!
2024 and they're playing ," Here Come The Judge" . Fascinating.
It’s kitsch and fun
This is great!
Thank you! It was a thrill to experience
Curious did any of the UK releases from the 80s and 90s make it to Japan. I am thinking Dub Syndicate, On You Sound System stuff etc
@@musicalarmchairs Everything made it to Japan. Google dub store record mart Their web site is in English and they have a searchable inventory. They are foreign-friendly and they ship abroad.
“Scientist kills the millennium bug”, have to look that up it reads like an IT joke.
Love this! Looks like I have a bunch of new shops I need to visit on my next trip.
All profiled on my channel !!!! Emjoy!
Finally a video on reggae in Japan I just wish you had flicked threw the bob marley section or tosh records
No worries. I’ll include the in an upcoming video. Are you subscribed to my channel? Check out my earlier two videos. Jamaican Taste in Okayama and Reggae Shop Nat (in Shinjuku; the video uploaded before this one)
I don't mean to be picky but when ever I see similar videos over the years u think they will show u the reggae section or Bob's section but it always ends up in the bloody all to common Beatles section once again
@@kentgoodall2516 No problem. Check out on my channel “REGGAE SHOP NAT” and “We visit Jamaican Taste in Okayama and listen to lots of good music in 10 minutes”.
Another great record shop. How does all this fantastic vinyl find it's way to Japan.
With Reggae, store owners have lived in Jamaica so they established relationships with labels for direct import. Another owner lived in the UK for many years. Couple that with longevity in business operations. The records in this shop are mostly new. The records in NAT (previous video) are mostly used.
Another amazing store! Well done!
Im not into Reggea, but these videos are nicely made Michael ;)
Thanks for posting this. In all my trips to Tokyo I've never hunted in Koenji. I always stop in Nakano and Kichijoji. Will be sure to check out Koenji next time.
I posted 5 video profiles on Koenji record shops this year alone. Please be sure to check them out when you have a chance.
It's a great store, as are many others in Shinjuku! I picked up a number of well priced records there a couple months ago. Looking forward to returning very soon.
In the meantime, check out the YT channel, "The Long Gone Loser Rock Show" He is an intrepid Tokyo visitor and shares your birth country, Thanks as always for commenting.
7 floors of heaven.
One of the many vinyl shopping marvels of Shinjuku. The building recently posted an announcement on every floor: no product photography. So public documentation inside that building is over.
Saludos de Perú
Bienvenido a mi canal y por favor visita Japón algún día pronto.
I saw you drop those 2 Luciano albums
Nothing ever hit the floor, I swear.
@@ricefieldrecords hahahaha
Old School Ska, Dancehall and Reggae records were still quite popular in the 90's and into the 00's in Japan. With a lot of bands also doing old school Ska and Rocksteady eg Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, the Determinations (Osaka). Not sure on the status now of bands and fans, but this shop shows there is still interest. Whilst I love later reggae and dancehall to me the classic years of Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae still hit the spot. I also cant go past the 2nd wave Ska (UK 80's) and 3rd Wave (US). Thanks for sharing
@@musicalarmchairs Thanks for your comment. I am finishing up another video profile on another reggae record shop in Shinjuku. I’m forwarding it to the owner for review right now. Please be sure to give it a look and comment when it’s posted. Both stores are good friends with one another so there should be a lot for you to take in. There is one more reggae shop in Shinjuku to cover and that is Dub Store Record Mart; one of the tiniest record stores I’ve ever been in. Cheers!
I want to go shop!!!
The U$D is at an all time high against the Japanese ¥en, I reckon you can budget a visit within your budget. Many inexpensive airline deals and AirBnB.
That store would be full of music that I have no idea, but same time many albums I might like. :D mr. Finglish (Bäd English Recs)
Fantastic
Wow. I was in Kawagoe last month but it was on a day they were closed. Wish I could have shopped there.
If you swing by the area again, check out Hollywood Records in Shin Tokorozawa. It’s on the same train line that I feature in my video. Meruido has great deals and the owner is very nice. Thanks for commenting. I saw your video reports on your Tokyo visits and subbed.
@@ricefieldrecords I'll be back in April. Meanwhile I subscribed to your channel.
i watched enough ozu films to be deeply envious of where you live and work. my first encounter with you was of you arguuing with someone on the "rachel's ghost" show who contends that that he is wiser than the grass is green!!! i enjoyed the songsplayed on your 2 minute videos but couldn't name them. you owe it to yourself to not have to feud with that particular person! good luck!
@@marcyfan-tz4wj Thank you very much. My appearance on that show was a one time only affair. It was a long time coming and I said my peace. Many more videos to come from me. Feel free to comment any time.
@@ricefieldrecords i share your agitation with nameless gent...i see comments that say "on my next trip to japan, i'm going to seek out what you're showing!"...i don't think i'll make it a 1st time but good lord-if there are more scenic things than store in kawagoe, i don't think i can handle it anyhow!
Looks like a great store! And I ordered the album shown at 4:34!
Barrelhouse, Boogie & the Blues! I loved that jacket cover and I knew you would too! I loved the Judy Collins paper head at the entrance. His taste and mine are so aligned. He gave me complete run of the store for the camerawork.
Wow that record shop was gorgeous! {Although I got a little bit worried about those steep stairs with the shallow tread} I really enjoyed seeing the second and third floors with the lounge areas and everything so beautifully displayed with attention to aesthetic detail And café/record store/music publisher/bookshop is basically my dream space Walking around the neighborhood with the great old buildings and lovely shrine was so very pleasant and peaceful vibes Your camera work and technique is always stepping up as well Anyway thank you for a very pleasant hang out at the shop, the neighborhood and the shrine
Thank you!! I borrowed a smartphone gimbal from my friend. He used it out in the field documenting Japanese gardens. You can pick them up used on Yahoo! Auc if you’re curious. And yes, it’s completely upped my game. Thank you for noticing. Kawagoe reminds me of my walks around Okayama Station.
@ the neighborhood seems so pleasant and I was talking to my wife about "gosh, I would love to explore those areas" but it seems like such a daunting trip for me… One of these years though, I just keep getting better
@ I totally got that feeling as soon as I started watching like "that's a place I could hang out" and I hope you keep finding some great new accessories or whatever it takes to keep having fun as your joyful personalities is the best part of your videos
Thanks for doing a record shop plus local area visit in one. So much to see in Japan. Never gets boring. I didn’t know about those historic clay sided houses will put it on the list for my next visit.
Kawagoe is a great day trip for people visiting Tokyo, as you don’t need to book a hotel if you visit for a day. Lots and lots of inexpensive restaurants and fantastic photo opportunities. Thanks for commenting always.
STONES RULE ❤
This was so enjoyable and fun. Harry looks like he'd be a scream to hang out with over a pint of Asahi and chat about his shop!
@@retromusings He is such a character! I had gone there in April and found the store closed. I’m so glad I tried again. I hope he likes my video. I can’t wait to show him.
wow X-Japan. That would be cool to own on vinyl. Really nice looking store. mr. Finglish (Bäd English Recs)
A friend of mine was a huge MERZBOW collector.....he probably had everything the artist produced....not my cuppa though!!!!
@@VagueRANT100 not my cuppa either but what a shop interior!?! Wild, right? I need to go back there again.
