Live registration of the SD Band gig in Neckerhal, Belgium, on 12 01 2024. Recorded dry at the monitor desk and mixed in Studio One. I used volume mixing 90%, added UA 1176 and Softube compressors on every channel and threw a mix compressor on the stereo bus. The male singers voice was not recorded due to technical issues...I added some audio from a video camera that was placed next to the FOH....

I wanted to see how the Maybach sounded through a Cornerstone Royal Antique pedal. Just a touch of gain and the guitar really sings. I proved myself, once again, that really good guitars do have their own sound!
Kiesel vs Strandberg

A comparison between a Kiesel Thanos and a Strandberg Boden Classic
too much talking,..i'm tired of keep waiting..just simply play it & what chords to be used..
Well, you can't please everybody all the time :) This video was requested. I also have a video just playing the tune. The chords are relatively straightforward, it's the reharmonisation that is offering the possibility to do this chord melody. The regular playthrough is here: th-cam.com/video/9WZQQ6UHqOw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=r0EzuvhMTVGaPrUe
That tele looks beautiful
Nice review and explanation of the Palomino. Thanks.
Bravo!! 👋Thank you
Thanks for sharing your journey! Really valuable stuff!
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, I think this is a super relevant side to using modelers that is not talked about! The solution could be getting a small, pedal-format power amp, feeding an IR-free signal from the FM3 to it and powering a 1x12 guitar speaker cab. I am not a fan of FRFR cabs at all. They behave totally differently and lack the dynamics of a real guitar cab powered by a real guitar amp. The Kemper powered speaker was supposed to get close, at least that´s what Christoph Kemper had told me before its release, but when I tried it, I wasnt impressed.
Hey buddy, that is exactly what I did in the end. I made a video about that too: th-cam.com/video/V2T97Pjp04g/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgxrorDU54Mzncgj2xN4AaABAg Thanks for your feedback! All the best.
I dont even play guitar and bought a new Bacchus P90 LP gold top and it is as good as anything gibson make INCLUDING the R6 custom shop. my friend has a shop and has 2 R6 gold tops and an R8 gold top. we put them side by side and my bacchus had better wood and the pickups had a little more growl and top end. seasoned musicians who work in the shop were blown away with the bacchus quality and the neck is exactly the same as a 1956 gibson unlike the R6 he had for sale. Steve in Australia.
That's good to here Steve, and I'm not surprised at all! All the best with your Bacchus!
Nice video mate!
Thanks! Curious about your new Lag!
I’m loving this on such a beautiful song ! Gona give this a try . From Cleveland, Ohio Thanx!
All the best, it's an amazing tune indeed. It's not that hard once you get the fingerings for the chords in your memory. Hope the weather in Cleveland is better than in Belgium right now ;)
I have a Classic NX and an Alex Machack NX 6 both came with the NX Venture bag. I don't like the maple neck of the classic because it's too sensitive to environmental conditions and expands and contracts more than I like. The Machack has an Indian rosewood neck which feels really good and I love the sound with the custom Michael franks pickups in HSH configuration which are low gain and sound creamy. The thing I wish I could do over is the classic because the frets are like knives. I have had a tech do work on them and it's still just uncomfortable. I am thinking about selling it and saving for something else... waiting for the next season of strandbergs, Everything in the line up is all high gain and that is not what I need. The classic was a good in between option for tones, but the alternative version is a different color I don't like. I have the Malta version... just wish I could trade the whole neck for a rosewood neck.
Thx for the comparison, have u ever tried Ibanez Q series? If u wanna try variety of tones, so Iightweight too, roasted birdseye maple neck
Hey there! Yes, i had an Ibanez Q for a while. Loved it and got it for a really good price. I don't know why I was so stupid to return it, but I wanted to get a Kiesel. I must say the Ibanez was...just as good and a third of the price. I used it for a live audition for a cruise ship agancy, you can see it here: th-cam.com/video/pFSiAwYTXGM/w-d-xo.html
Oh yeah, my main issue was that it didn't have a trem...I think that was a big mistake. I don't think the even offer a trem version these days. For that kinda guitar they should include that option
I just purchased the FM3 Turbo. You input is very helpful thank you.
Thanks! and all the best with the FM3, when you find yourself struggling to get decent sounds (and it can be a challenge in the beginning), check out Austin Buddy's Gold Pack. Not only do the presets sound killer, you also get to learn a lot from them. The guy has a few video's explaining his approach and those are eye openers.

words of wisdom ;)
The noise gate on every fractal product is simply awful, it reminds me the old time of Line6 entrance in the market where i used to completely shut it off to make it sound « real ». Once it is admitted it’s worth to tweak everything a little .. EQs, gain, and all the incredible parameters that are inside. I’m the user of an AX8, and despite it’s the older generation it gives me full satisfaction. I’m still amazed of the incredible amount of quality and possibilities in tone shaping inside an only one product. I really love it, and on some amps and complex meltings and tweakings, I even manage to gel some realistic feedbacks at low volume on studio monitors, on a PA we are near to the Grail
Are you still happy with the Laney 112? I have an axe iii that I run thru EV elx 12 tops and have been finding the same thing you mentioned. A lot of tweaking to get what I want to hear. Thinking about getting two 112 or two 212 Laney frfr cabs. . Wondering if you could play back music thru these like a backing track or if that would get colored? I have tried the kemper cab with kemper unit as well as a mission engineering cab with kemper. Did not like either. Especially for high gain. Anyway just curious if you ever bought a second one for stereo.
Hi Mike. I have been on a journey with those modelers...I did a video with some decent recordings of a live gig explaining why I will no longer be using a modeler live: th-cam.com/video/de75qPDyiwM/w-d-xo.html Since then I sold the FM3, got a Quad Cortex...sold that one too en bought another FM3 (the Turbo). For my rock band gigs I'm now using a BadCat amp and a Gigrig G3S with a dozen pedals and I'm happy. In the studio here I'm using the FM3. I also have a 'one man band' looping project, and for this I also try to use the FM3.. but I'm struggling. I have to invest so much time to get a sound that I like when I'm playing...I'm getting desperate and may end up selling the FM3 again, and getting the new Laney 'amp pedal' and a few standard pedals. The Laney LFR is just as good as it was at the start, it's just for me, as a player, I can't find a sound in those modelers that inspires me when playing live. It's all very controled and neat, but I need the unpredictable feedback, the interaction between cab and guitar. I can't seem to get that with a modeler, any modeler. The Laney can be set to PA mode, so then it's a wonderful (expensive) bleutooth speaker :)
The Kiesel by a long-shot!
I agree...the Strandberg is no longer with me, the Kiesel is here to stay :)
@@PatDeJongeSoundwise I just have an issue with where they place the cable input on those. If they would place them behind like the Strandberg and crave out that bottom to allow you to play in classical mode I would be all over that Kiesel. I can live with out the endur neck, but the body design really does have some thought put into it.
@@Ast3rixMusic I understand. On those type of guitars the output jack should be located at a different spot. Even standing up, with a regular cable, the jack and cable are sitting against my right leg. I've gotten used to it, but now you've mentioned it it annoys me actually. So I switched to a 90° jack and when running the cable through the inside of the strap it's fine. You could ask Jeff in one of his live streams about the output jack. He'll probably tell you that reprogramming the CNC machines is too costly.
😂
Beautiful build. So where is the website of you guys?
hi, thanks! Well, the guitars are build in Bosnia, we have a Facebook page (facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063465184077) and orders can be placed via my website (Soundwise(dot)be) since language can sometimes be a problem :)
Great palying sir , can i know where to have the backing track?
Thanks! The backing track can be purchased on Martin Miller's website. Everybody is a salesman these days :)
Stellar playing Bee Gees congrats
hi, thank you! Glad you recognized it, it's a beautiful harmony, those guys knew what they were doing!
Awesome job breaking it down.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
A simple call out to the forum would have solved this. Those people love helping anyone having a problem.
How was your day?
I have 2 DT 50s a DT 50 head and a st 50 212 combo. I’ve owned a lot of tube amps over the years. To me the DT 50 is the most versatile best sounding, I’ll never sell mine. The used prices are going up. Maybe line6 will come out with a DT 50 helix.
It’s a great guitar but they are huge Jumbo frets made for beginners according to Yamaha. I found them super awkward so make sure you can live with them before buying it.
Hi, yes indeed, the frets are substantial, in width, not in height (at least on mine). So I actually like them.
So which ones have the fatter neck? the 60's?
The 50's neck are the fattest. Just like with the Gibson models. It's actually very fat :)
both look cool but i much prefer the pick ups in the Kiesel.
I understand, depends on you music style. Both have their own character and uses.
Pretty beautiful man, and you have a beautiful studio. keep it up!
Thanks man! Really appreciate that. All the best!
I ditto your experience. Much can be said about the OOBE experience got Tchas. And kudos to you as it takes courage to be honest.
Thanks for your comment! I'm glad I was not alone in this search. Actually, quite a few people reached out with their experience. Seems like we sometimes feel 'embarrassed' admitting we can't get the sound we were hoping for with these units. And I believe that should not be the case, these things should sound decent out of the box. They're not cheap :)
nice playing, bro. i keep swinging between the kiesel and the strandberg like a pendulum..
Thanks buddy! They actually are not too far apart. I played a few gigs and to me the Strandberg is a tad more versatile. I did find the perfect bag for the Kiesel, a Mooer headless guitar bag, fits like a glove.
I very glad you were able to crack this. Yeah the learning curve is quite high on the unit, in my case when I got the axe effects, I bought the Cooper Carter configuration class with it so all that was covered in the setup on his videos for me so I didn't have to experience what you experienced even though I would have had the same problem without that. Sounded so good I broke down and got an FM-3 for live. Absolutely love what you had at the front end of this recording That sounded awesome
Thank you man! I just bought the tonepacks from AustinBuddy and that helped me even further. Can you point me in the direction of thet Cooper Carter class? I haven't heard about that. And thanks for the nice comment about the playing, really appreciate that!
that was a great lesson and interpretation of the song!
Thanks, really appreciate your kind words, means a lot!
Eres muy rollero para enseñar.
wow! Thank you very much!
Frets are nickel silver or stainless steel ?!
hey, the frets are nickel
I know this was posted a few years ago but I have bad eyesight and I can't see the name on that guitar is it a SUHR. also thank you for doing this demo because I'm wanting to get away from tube amps due to not being able to lug them around and also, they are becoming cost prohibitive.
Indeed, my back is glad with the Orange :) The guitar is a Siggi Braun reliced Strat. (www.siggi-braun.com/product/relic-s-type/) They are as good as it gets! Siggi does some special runs every now and then, that's when you need to order one! I also have a Suhr Classic, I much prefer the Siggi Braun
Buzzzzzzzz hmmmm.m that tele thing is a electric razor...get so.ething with a humbucker .... yuk
You mean the 60 cycle hum? Yep, that's a single coil for you... the 'buzz' in the sound is something else: the camera mic couldn't handle' the volume :)
Kiesel kills
Yes indeed. They are actually one of the best (and really: cheapest) custom building companies around. And they understand how to interact with their customers. I mean those weekly live video's, the special runs, the Kiesel experience, the 'open days',...they're on it!
interesting, as far as i know the default global/cabinet is set to Active by default, any higher gain amps/presets would sound atrocious without any IRs, running direct sorry that was the case otherwise, I've got an orange pedal baby and a cab in case i want to go that route, but using IEMs exclusively with the band and a silent stage for almost 2 years now, really used to it now and works for us if it's any use, while testing OUT2 for the power amp/cab setup, having a GEQ block before out2 set to JMPre-1 was quite handy in dialing things in if needs be on the unit (with a simple bass, middle, treble, presence) the NEWT looks like it has a lot of settings however to do that straight on the unit, but having a simple guitar orientated EQ before the power amp output was quite useful for me
hi Paul, thanks for the tip! I'm having a love-hate relation with the FM3 now...I use it for a new project and some days I really like the unit, other days I think it sounds awfull. I really wish I had a steady 'feel' about the thing, then I could act upon that, but it seems to shift all the time. Even today i build a full pedalboard (with a Gigrig G3 switcher) and after 30 minutes of testing it I decided to start again and use the FM3. Now I think I'm struggling more with the latency build up in my chain than with the quality of the sounds. It never ends :)
@@PatDeJongeSoundwise the journey never ends indeed =) if it helps i think it might be a case of finding the best use case scenario for whatever unit/setup you want to use instead of one device to do it all, which is a huge challenge in itself there are some gigs/sessions where say a pedalboard into a small combo amp really shines and others where they require a silent stage /DI options and everyone on in ears (where modelling really excels) the big thing for me was having a consistent monitoring situation, where the FM3 is always consistent and sounds and feels good, this is through monitors at home, and then IEMs with the band (we play metal i'll just add), outside of ear fatigue 😄it'll always sound the same the amount of gigs where monitoring was haphazard, or you couldn't really hear yourself depending on where you were on stage etc.. are all things of the past with this setup so if stuff out front now always sounds great it's just a case perhaps of trying to thorougly improve how you're hearing/monitoring the FM3, now i'm not as versed with the power amp/cab setup, but there's quite a difference with how various power amps will perform and feel, i've tried a few class D power amps (SD power stage, even some bass stuff the Warwick gnome or TC Bam ) it was still some kind of compromise and it still sounded like 'a monitor sound through a cab' if that makes sense, i'm yet to try FRFR but not sure if that'll be any better to be honest maybe it's worth spending some time trying some other power amps, and if you want to try something else within the FM3, i'd suggest exploring the 'speaker' page within the amp block tab and experiment with speaker impedance curves that better match your amp/cab situation, it makes a lot of difference
I've had a few Fractal products and never got one with cab modeling off at startup. This is the first time I've heard of that happening. Very strange. Regardless, it's great you got that solved because Fractals are incredibly good 👍
Indeed buddy, out of all the people who watched this video, only 3 reported they had the same 'issue'. So it is very rare, but it happens. All of those units were purchased in Europe, so we think that maybe something happened when the distributor did an update. No biggie but I did sell my first unit because of that...I think. I will never really know of course. I'm glad it is solved, the unit is fantastic and the new update is a dream (gapless switching!)
it was the noise gate?
This model is available in our shop in France!! BIG THANKS to Sire, Larry Carlton and IMS DISTRIBUTION beautiful instrument and sound amazing for the price!
goede tip Pat!
Succes alvast!
Bedankt Pat! Ik ga me eens goed onderdompelen in de manual.
Ahh Global Settings, it used to be just line out and one other, but now much more complicated. Global was always something in the modellers you had to be aware of.
Indeed. And once you know it's obvious...but that takes a while :)
Great breakdown, excellent performance, and that guitar sounds fantastic. It seems like you have some expertise in production. I was curious about the blue/purple Telecaster with a Floyd Rose tremolo system in the 1993 music video. There's an "A" logo on the headstock, and it doesn't appear to be a Fender or a Jackson. Do you happen to know what type of guitar it is? Kind regards, David.
Hi David, thanks for your nice comment. Really appreciate that. The guitar Eros is using in the clip is a Tom Anderson. I had one 😊. Fantastic guitars!
Well - I almost forgot to tell you that your guitar does not look bad at all either 🙂
This is great. Thanks so much. I got a Rockstock two button switch but I’ve tried all programming options and it won’t perform the HOLD function so essentially it’s two single switches. Still nice, but not as good as having two more fm3 switches. If I’m understanding this correctly, you are able to use the two buttons and each and you can also perform the HOLD function with each on the Boss? So really each of the switches on the Boss are the same as the onboard FM3 switches? If so I’ll definitely buy the Boss. Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply, I was dong some studio work and could not check my messages. But yes, you are right. The Boss FS7 switches can be assigned as 'latching' or 'switching', hence the price. I think the Rockstock you have only does switching. The only negative thing about the Boss FS6 is it that it needs a battery. Hope that clarifies that? All the best!
@@PatDeJongeSoundwise Thanks a lot for info. Really opened up some possibilities for me. Did you do any other setup to use the hold function? Or is it just that you assigned the tap function and the hold automatially works? If there is some other setting can you share what it was? Thanks again for the video🙏 p.s. I'm also a bit confused since you have used the FS-6 and mentioned FS-7 here. I'm sure its a typo
@@shuvodipghosh Thanks for your comment. About that hold: I'm sorry, must've forgotten to mention. If you look at the screen at this moment in the video (th-cam.com/video/r7W74YH51Fo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=92U7cLFRN20m2Qng&t=664), 11:04, you can read the settings for the Hold function. You see on the left side it says 'TAP', on the right it says 'HOLD', just copy the setting from the Hold function (Category: Bank - Function:Inc/dec, etc) and it's done. I'm using a Boss FS-6 indeed. The FS-7 would work as well, and this one doesn't require a 9v power supply if you don't mind the fact that there is no light indicating what you've done. I prefer the FS-6 but I wish they would've included the option to power it from an adaptor...batteries always die on me when I have no spare at hand :)
@@PatDeJongeSoundwise Cool. Thank you so much Pat. I'm waiting on my fs6 to arrive. Cant wait to try this. Cheers
Wow! Wondering why mine was sounding fizzy. Cabinet modelling was bypassed on mine too.
oh! Quite unreal he? I'm glad you solved it as well. It would've been a 'return the damn thing' issue if I didn't figure it out. Night and day difference. All the best, and enjoy the real sounds now :)
I bought it used. I wonder if the seller knew that is was bypassed? Anyway, love how it sounds now. I'm glad I saw your video. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your experience, man. I bet it will help a lot of people. Hopefully Fractal will make their instructions clearer too.
Thanks Sam! I suppose when you designed and know the software inside out, it is sometimes hard to explain how it all works to a new user. We call this the 'disadvantage of the advantage'. I can forgive them that, it's just: it took me a really long time to figure it out, they owe me a coffee! ;)
