Bridget for me is such a fun little story. At first i identified with her because I considered myself just a femboy or cross dresser, then i began identifying with testament, and the same hear i came out as gender fluid/trans fem, Bridget came out as trans fem too. Its so strange when your gender envy follows a similar story as you do and because of that, the character became much more powerful for me personally!

just wanted to say, pretty good video, but I have one big issue with your idea that pandering being done to the lowest common denominator (in this case the transgender community) is an inherently bad business idea. if the developers wanted to market a character towards the trans community they would also gain a significant amount of favor with anyone partial to the trans community (the west and its younger generations are very much partial towards the LGBT community). you also mentioned that it wouldn't make sense for them to market towards the transgender community if their audience was japanese, but arcsys has directly stated before that they want to market games to a western audience and obtain a bigger grasp of players overseas (they've been saying this even as far back as with blazblue cross tag's release, but likely even further if I had to guess). i'm not trying to say this is some global conspiracy for arcsys to be some sort of evil conglomerate harping traction off the backs off of westerners, but to say that marketing a character towards a lgbt-partial direction wouldn't be profitable is pretty disingenuous. for that reason, I do believe that there was some level of pandering with the character's direction, especially because i generally have a negative view towards the faith of corporations when making decisions like this as a whole. regardless of the quality of her story and regardless of whether or not it was done for profit, the fact remains that bridget is a girl and that this entire conversation is the most annoying discussion to hit guilty gear.

This whole Bridget thing is maddening I've been arguing with some people who support the whole transgender Bridget thing on my Twitter and these people are utterly ridiculous this whole situation pissed me off and made me never want to pick up a guilty gear game ever again. I am coming at this from a casual Perspective I had only played one guilty gear game up to that point and, the only reason I even knew about Bridget was because of the trap femboy community. But whenever I think about the context of this character's background and the ultimate so-called character Arc they go through it just makes me think well this is a poorly written character like wtf. Like almost everything about the Bridget background and character is stupid but for some reason these idiots go along with it because you know tranny. I just look at it from the perspective of I view it as bad character writing and, if you can't write for fighting games then you suck. PS no I don't have a problem with trans characters I am currently reading through fire punch a manga with an actually quite interesting transgender character in it and i even found said character relatable in the sense of being a movie buff.

the fact that people were so willing to sexualize +R bridget (who was 14 at the time) but are suddenly put off at the idea of bridget coming out as a trans woman is so icky to me

I was so happy when Bridget came out as trans. I feel like Bridget was always meant to be trans, but it couldn't be explicit for reasons. Like how Hoyoverse can't have explicit lesbian characters because of China, but they have a ton of implied lesbian couples. Even if I'm wrong about Bridget always having meant to be trans, I feel like her story is a natural evolution so I don't see a problem with them pronouncing her as trans.

Honestly it's just the character direction that was just really wacky, especially given her past story lines. Ofc that's how it is now so she's a she, but if she ends up going back to a boy next game I'm still just gonna be a little caught off guard. It's just a weird direction to go into especially since her last story really emphasized the fact that she wanted to have more masculine traits but in the end became ok with still dressing however she liked. Yes this is a outcome that could have happened in the story no doubt. But mix that in with the way she was raised and it's just a really weird direction, and it feels like it thematically contradicts her story up unil now even if no hard lore was broken.

I want to say that overall I agree with your perspective, but I think Monroe's points are valid if only because he wasn't anywhere as rude as you are. Call that a weak excuse if you want, but listening to you isn't easy. I doubt you care what I have to say, and your point is informed and not using the the same week defenses as the usual people that blindly defend Bridget and have spent less time playing any GG than fucking Monroe did Strive. I like this new direction for Bridget overall. We can say we're on the same boat on that. I like seeing different takes of this situation, and yours is as valid as any other even if its your personality is grating. Like or dislike new Bridget, she's an interesting topic. I think Bridget is a much better depiction of "marginalised" groups like me than Testament and still a fun character despite being watered down like everyone else in Strive. Ladiva is Cygames' by the way as so is Cagliostro.

I fucking hate taking part in long dicussions on this subject so it took me a lot of time to watch this video even tho it's popped up for me a number of times, but this whole video is such an excellent summary of the entire discourse, I think this'll be my thing to point to for people who want more information on it. One thing that I'd like to add on (on the off chance nobody else has said it yet) is that not completely unlike the way some trans women in Japan use the word otokonoko to refer to themselves, there is still a sizeable amount of trans women who speak English and derive affirmation from the term femboy. It's ultimately a slightly different situation seeing as Japanese has not made the shift to referring to crossdressing and transgenderism as different things, whereas English has but some people still choose to use the outdated stuff because gender is a social construct so who cares it makes them happy

I remember something from Dimitri's video, is that some people harrased some japanese artist/fans that made or posted art about Bridget and referring to Bridget as a boy. Do you have anything to elaborate on that if there were actual dumbdumbs that harrass people over these things?

3:35-3:40 that is literally an argument that these kinds of people use💀 But an example of how gaslighting doesn’t actually do much is the fact that trans people exist, because like they’ve been taught their entire life that they are their GAB (Gender At Birth) and yet they still turn out be trans, because if you actually trans then you’re going to eventually realise it on your own, same if you’re “gaslighted” into being a girl when you’re a guy, you’ll eventually realise that you aren’t a girl (unless you turn out trans that is… obviously).

the fact is, Bridget was already representing people identifying to this character. I can only speculate why they decided to make this change, but making Bridget a woman from a guy, is the equivalent of making black panther white. Because as i already wrote, the character will stop representing a certain group, in favor of another. Now, do trans women find representation in video games? I dare to say no, at least not enough. If they do, it's a rarity. Even in the case of Poison from Street Fighter, the debate goes back and forth, and everyone is encouraged to make their own headcanon. Which is sad, because a headcanon, is obviously not representation. To me, it sounds more like "who cares". Should the story of Bridget move forward? Were there really only two ways to chose from? manly man or girly girl? I am not sure. To be honest, I play Tekken for too long, to know that after countless in-game (and real) years, Kazuya and Heihachi are still trying to throw each other into a volcano. I just think this shows it's possible to preserve stories when they hold a meaning (well... not the mentioned one i guess) Unfortunately, this is the only instance, where I can positively say that i have not "managed to be happy for trans women who now get to see themselves in Bridget". Because now, i do not see myself in there. Suddenly i was erased, and that makes me sad. Does that mean i hate trans women? As you correctly said, no. It's so sad that instead of having our own plethora of characters, we end up fighting each other over what was left. I'd like to close by saying that, i hope you'll understand me, if i cling to the GGX2 Bridget. And i hope new fans will find comfort in the new game, as i was in the old.
