Videos for me and my 3 sons to look back on in a few years time. Capturing the adventures and craziness that is our family, their childhood, and my life.

Rainbow Molesworth Loop ep3

Today we ride the Rainbow Road which is 8km back up the road we came to St Arnaud on. The local shop provides the supplies and the isn't a great selection for what turns into a longer than expected (again) day.

I'm leaving on a ride tomorrow and have a motorbike adventure planned with MJ so I bought a mini drone and this is the footage from the first couple of flights. Lots to learn but it is fun flying through the house in manual mode.

Surfing in Surfers

EJ decides to try surfing in Surfers and we all head to the beach with a couple of surf boards. Then we're eating before the days activities continues with more adventure in the sunshine that isn't at the theme parks.
Motorbikes Around Red Rocks

Saturday and Micah and I head in a different direction on the motorbikes. This time it is Red Rocks and it is much more difficult that our previous off road escapades.

Doing something different but in a place we've ridden the mountain bikes previously. Next time we will take lunch, the GoPro and ride through to Kapiti.
TA24 Finale

Day 20 and I have over 100km of headwind through to the finish. Fortunately it eases off in the last 30k or so as if the weather gods figured out I wasn't going to give up and I was going to finish in 19 and a half days elapsed (day 20 isn't over until 9am the next day).
TA24, day 19
มุมมอง 1174 หลายเดือนก่อน
More troubles as I head to Queenstown and a ferry crossing at 5pm. Fortunately there are plenty of bike shops and I'm able to eventually get my issues sorted (which involves buying a new tyre). I don't make it to the Mavora Lakes but find shelter out of the wind with a water supply and toilet.
TA24, day 18

Later start because the shop (singular) in Haast doesn't open till 8am. Then I'm off towards Haast Pass pausing briefly at Pleasant Flat where I camped when riding the South Island with Alastair, Andrew, and Keith in 2021. A big climb, a fast descent, then a tailwind gets me to Wanaka and cousin Jo for dinner with her family.
TA24, day 17
มุมมอง 1534 หลายเดือนก่อน
After having equipment problems everyday in the SI could it be today will be a good day? Well 1st gear isn't working and while on the some climbs today I should be alright, tomorrow is the Haast Pass which is a grunter and if you stop you'll struggle to start.
TA24, day 16

More trouble with the bike again today. I also manage to have the rock steady feature switched off on the camera which means shakey footage. My frustration starts to surface as days of challenges continue to slow me down and keep me from being as far down the country as I had hoped. In saying that, the West Coast Wilderness trail is a spectacular ride and well worth taking on. There isn't much ...
Awesome will be riding this in early February 🇨🇦🇳🇿tour
Enjoy. What route are you doing?
@ Hammer to Blenheim
❤
That all looked like hard work. I'm exhausted!
Welcome home, Mark.
Camden Cookhouse brilliant wee place to stay, stayed there on last yrs S2S.
I passed it when I did S2S. Epic shower in the laundry, like a monsoon massage of cleanliness.
What stunningly gorgeous scenery. Thanks for sharing, Mark.
Great ride in there, done it a few times now.Going by Jim Ward manager of the Molesworth station,he told me the toll fee only covers 400m of road.
That is probably the bridges and fords that are sealed 🤣
Wow! I haven't seen an honesty box in years. You used to get them at roadside fruit stands all the time, backed in the day. Now what does that say about society today?
It wasn't an honest box and a lady came out, have is advice and told us stories of different washouts through the years. There was an honesty box at the accommodation tonight though!
Nice
Nice work! Well done on the bush bashing
That section was a lot of fun. Just the right amount of adventure and drama for it to be enjoyable and not endured!
Some really rough surfaces! I'm pleased you got through there ok
Yes, the camera does pick up all the lovely bird song.
Very nice video! I also have a Himalayan and I'm planning on getting the Neo, it looks an awesome little buddy!
Gotta agree with Matt, really looking forward to seeing this adventure!
Loving being able to follow another MB adventure!!
Life is about having fun! :D
Great day 1👌🏼
I’m only guessing I know what you’re talking about!
Looks and sounds nice and quiet. Wouldn't want it to sneak up on me😳
Really nice view at 6 mins 59 secs...... the MX-5!!!
Well done, Mark. Love the scenery. Very enjoyable from the comfort of my armchair. All the best for ‘the big one’ coming up.
Got to love summer in Wellington
Great video! Well done doing 7 days during some rubbish summer days
The 7 day video got me out and feeling somewhat prepared.
What HUNT wheel set model do you use? I am planning to upgrade my wheel set for upcoming Randonneur brevet.
Just the basic alloy gravel wheels. I bought them so I would have a 700c option when I had a bike with 650b wheels. I've had zero problems with them.
Looks fun😊
Where are the clips of my alley oop and roundhouse kick backs?
🙄
Looks lovely. Certainly hasn't been beach weather here this week.
Hi. Does the unit come with elevation profile?
It shows your current elevation but doesn't have any feature like the Garmin hill climb feature.
Fun fun😊
In che comune è questa pista
Palmerston North is a city in Manawatu 90 minutes north of Wellington.
Such a cool ride! So pleased you had fun😁
I've never taken a trail bike around the red rocks (most of my motorbikes have been road bikes), but I have been 4WDing around there.
It would be just as much fun in a 4WD. Although more challenging if you get stuck ... If a motorbike gets stuck the 2 of us can just lift it out!
@FutureMark809 You're not wrong there. We had to dig it out with shovels about three times.
You're barely above an idle. Get them revs up!
I didn't take the GoPro so was riding one handed trying to keep it steady with the phone and the bike 🤣
Perfect! Looks fun😁, and a bit wet. Did he like having J's L plates on😂?
No he didn't!
Awesome! How is it on the road (comfort, speed) compared to a road bike like the Trek Domane AL 5? Thanks
I can't comment on the Trek as I've never ridden one. However, I ride the Speedster plenty on the road, on gravel and occasionally on mountain bike trails. It always seems to go where I want it to and gives me confidence. Definitely faster on tarmac than the hardtail and I have aches or pains after riding all day multiple days in a row.
@FutureMark809 thanks for your response. You're blessed to be riding around NZ. Consider riding up the road to Mt Ruapehu. It's a beauty!
🧡
Another great day. And lots of good food😊
Beautiful scenery again👌🏼
And yay for problem free day🙌🏼
What a day!
That's was a tough day! But you did it!!
Toughest day ever I think.
That was a good day😊
Yep, I got to see you 😘
great series, really enjoyed it
Excellent video series. Thanks for posting these.
Glad you enjoyed.
Really enjoyed watching this. Took me back to my ride, seeing the same places. Such great discovery.
It is an amazing ride.
Well Done. Great effort through all the adversity.
Congrats
Hi Mark. How did the cassette upgrade go. I want to change mine from an 11_34 to an 11_ 40. My mechanic says no but I see people doing it. Did you use a goat link. Have enjoyed watching your vids the last few days.
No house link or anything. My mechanic thought it would be fine and I've had zero issues with it ... Well not zero but those weren't related to the cassette size. I've found I almost never use 1st and rarely 2nd except when loaded or riding a particularly aggressive incline (e.g. more than 15%). Definitely made it easier and more enjoyable when riding loaded.
Gorgeous early morning views!
What does TA stand for?
TA is Tour Aotearoa. It is a ride that runs the length of New Zealand. You can learn more here: www.touraotearoa.nz/p/home.html?m=1
No first gear AND having to give way at a one-way bridge.... Just as well you've got great NZ views and wildlife (birds) to nake up for it!
When I heard the tyre issue, Mt first thought was that your wheel was slightly crooked in the frame, and just needed to be loosened, then straightened by pushing it a wee bit harder in on the opposite side.
I don't explain much in the video but I checked the rim wondering if it was a buckle. Then I was looking to see if the tyre wasn't seated correctly. Nope, turned out the cones were loose and I didn't have the tool to sort.
