Why Pond Fish Die... Troubleshooting Common Pond Problems (Part 3)
This dude is out for catfish. Seriously though you gotta be insane to put a channel cat in you’re pond
Thank you for agreeing with me. 🙂 I have a lot of clients that have them, and wish that they could get rid of them once they got bigger.
Thank you. Super accessible teaching.
Thank you for watching, I hope that the video helped you.
Makes sense.
Dam u talkn to much
A dam is what beavers build, and "to" should be "too". I won't get into the rest of it. Anyway, thanks for watching the video!
Hi Chris. My family and I (wife and 6 year old daughter) absolutely love your videos. I really appreciate you taking the time to make them. I know that you make your own gravity fed filter systems out of Rubbermaid stock tanks and they are typically layered with matala filter pads in them. How many GPH can you push through one of your filter tanks? How much flow for the 70 gallon stock tank filter? The 100 gallon? The 150 gallon?
Hi, thank you for watching my videos! Unfortunately Rubbermaid doesn't make the 70 anymore. I like to use the 100 with one 4" bottom drain, and a pump between 3,000 to 4,000gph. The 150, I use for two 4" bottom drains, and pumps 4,000 to 7,500gph. The matala pads are good, but I prefer a less ridged pad that is about 1" thick.
Interesting informative video. Thank you for taking the time to make it
Thank you for watching. 🙂
Very informative video for someone like me who wanted to know some basics on how the bead filter works and cleanings, ect. Thank you! 🙌🙏💖
Wow... Talking for 3 minutes and saying nothing.
Most swimming pools are made of cement, so not sure what the issue is, as long as you seal or water proof it some way.
What if it's raining or snowing. Does this have to be under cover?
Good question. These power stations are very commonly used for camping, RV's, etc., but they are not waterproof. Some say water resistant, but still not good to leave out in the rain. They should be covered with a tarp, and kept up off of the ground so they don't sit in a puddle of water. There are covers designed for them as well. They are safe to use indoors, so there is no problem running them in a garage, shed, or even in your living room, and running an extension chord out to your pond equipment.
How can I germinate my arrow arum seeds
I have not tried that, so I can't give you good advice about it, but I'm sure you can find some helpful info on line.
Thank you. I'm doing a dry creek bed.
Sounds good, I hope it works out well for you and your pond!🙂
wanted to know what a spatterdock was, clicked this video, was not disappointed. thank you for the explanation!!
Great, I'm glad it answered your questions. 🙂
Never heard such rubbish in such short time. This video spits some facts and connetcts then to total false conclusions. Dont know where to start. But like I bought nike shoes so I run marathon.... like ... what is is the connection between those ? Heating ponds is full non sense. FULL non sense. Cold water contains more oxygen than warm water. Fish go into hyberbation, cold water provides more than enough O2 for this. Ponds NEVER go below 4"C on the bottom (Basic phisics - Density - water). So leaving water at rest at frozen temnperatures is soooo much better for fish. how did evolution do this last few milion years.... true HOAX this video.
Talk about not making sense!
Great video. Thank you. Thiinking about planting this in my self contained bog metal container bog filter (4x2x2 steel trough). It is constantly fed water from the pond. Would this work on texas?
I think that it would do fine.
I wasn’t even thinking about the cement until a local said his pond liner was punctured by a deer so I’m leaning toward a cement lined stream now. I think I’ll use a dye to make it look more like sand between the rocks. The dye won’t hurt the wildlife will it?
No. The dye should be ok. I've used it a few times.
Thank you for an informative video. I love these plants and find they add much to the landscape whether in a water-filled container or a water feature.🪴
They are very popular for a reason, they're really nice.
What about 79 degrees in morning but 59 at night and power is out for last 3 hours
How long the fish can survive depends on the volume of water, the temperature if the water, and how many/how big the fish are.
Will double sided pond liner tape stick to it for an underwater joint?
They have to be dry and clean
@@jerseyshorepondscapesvideos Thanks
Great video, but I believe there’s a few incidents where you meant to say to use, “single-sided adhesive patch.” All your videos have been so educational. Thank you.
Thanks for all the information
Thanks, informative
I'm OK with visible spots where the pond lining is leaking, however who is the manufacturer/what is the name of the 6" strip with the pre-applied adhesive? I've used the two-sided splice tape/seam tape and it's sticky!! What about the 3M instructions to use the lap sealant/seam caulk over the top of the edges of the seam tape? It's probably overkill but they also have the instruction to "prime" (rough up/take off the shine of the smooth surface of the liner) before applying anything, including the glue. I have found using lacquer thinner does a good job of doing that. Where is the information for the liquid membrane repairs? I don't find the products on your website. And yes!! The EPDM liners are HEAVY!!
You confirmed some of the ideas I had but want sure if it was best practice.
Am I the only one who thought that grilled spadderdock was beaver food?
Uhm.... i sure hope that is no badwater.... 😅
Thank you 🙂. Interesting about the chameleon plant. I only bought a couple of those which I divided and dotted in around the pond this mid- summer. They seem to have struggled big time perhaps because of being planted too deep (15-20 cm below water surface). I was saddened by this but i now think it might have been a blessing in disguise.
Once they get rooted in, they are very invasive. They may be too deep in your pond.
I have a large pond (14K gal) … I’d love to have 2 of those Victoria Lilies … is there a way to have them in a concrete pond … it’s 5ft deep on one end and 3ft on the shallow end (CA) Thanks.
They will do fine planted in large containers, but I would build them up a bit in the 3' deep end. They love the hot sun, and warmth water, so try to keep them about a foot or so deep.
Thanks for this video. I have a 5000 gallon pond and the Blue Heron cleaned out most of my goldfish. I'm going to try the fishing line around the edges. I'm also going to try running some white string between the trees to make the flight path more difficult.
The fishing line should help, sometimes they will land further away in the yard, and walk up to the pond. so having a perimeter will help
I can it’s true I have canna lily’s in my front yard and there alright not perfect but good and I also planted them near my turtle ponds and look so much better
great, that has been my experience too. Just trying to share what I've learned.🙂
@@jerseyshorepondscapesvideos canna lilies really do keep the nutrients low so algae doesn’t grow I even have to supplement my ponds with fertilizer
Very helpful video, thank you! We ripped out the 4-year old pond foam that was crumbling and absorbing water and replaced it all with the concrete mixture you recommended. It worked fantastic and looks so much more professional and we have less water use and evaporation on our pond-less waterfall. Want to know if you recommend sealing the concrete at any point?
Nice, you don't have to seal the concrete on a waterfall.
Thanks for that presentation.Do I need to be concerned about nutrients and chemicals leaching from mulch into the pond?
I believe much of the confusion regarding channel catfish, bullhead catfish, etc. is a lot of people attribute the algae reducing benefits of Plecostomus, that they have heard about in pet stores, to other types of catfish, and for the most part they do not apply. Plecostomus, btw do not do well when water temperatures get below 50 degrees. Some people do appreciate channel catfish for aquaponics systems however.
Yes, I agree with you entirely. I have had a few clients buy a catfish or two to help control the population of their goldfish in the pond.
It’s the smile and giggles for me every time he giggles in a video I like it idk why but it just brings me joy and pleasure
Just being me!🙂
What do you plant in? Gravel or soil???
Just regular top soil packed in tightly with gravel on the top and bottom of the pot.
5:20 What about in nature, no pumps in ponds and lots of plants in nature’s ponds and lakes?
Much larger volumes of water, and much larger surface area for water to interact with air/wind. Some bodies of water are also spring fed, or fed by rivers. Nature also balances the environment, as a hopefully balanced ecosystem. There are also fish, turtles, ducks, and other creatures that may also eat many of the plants. None of this usually exists in a man made garden pond. They are often over stocked with fish and or plants, in much smaller environments.
Thanks
Can you winterize them to cime bsck next year?
Yes, they are a perennial. They will survive winter cold. Just cut them back late fall and leave the pot in the pond. they will start growing again in the spring.
I have a small wetland area in my yard that is overcome with grasses. I’d rather have cattails. You are saying I can get the seed pods (like now in September) and spread them? I'm also willing to do some pots, but I was wondering if they need to be cold sown. Any special seed germination tips?
Hi, I've never had seeds, but a couple of small plants will spread quickly one established.
Dig the layer of topsoil from where you want them to grow as they like loamy subsoil, thrive in 1ft of water and up, but always need source of moisture.
@@mgoh1984 Thank you. I will winter sow some seeds in milk jugs and also prepare an area with a mix of soil and chopped dry leaves. Maybe something will come up!
Please. Make sure pond is level and make sure you have room on all 4 corners, sadly I custom built my pond too close to neighbors fence and regret it, it’s too too close. Also heavy rains this winter is so bad, when it rains I have to drain my pond 2 times a night by hand release pump. I’m so tired on rainy nights lots of work because lower level grass and concrete pushes backyard water to pond, ughhh so much work on rainy days! Think smart watch plenty of builds to build right. I wish I did more homework!
Maybe you can install a small sump pump with a float to turn the pump on or off when the water level rises. So when the water level gets to a set height, the pump turns on to lower the water level. So you don't have to do all the work.
Excellent video! I did not know of water hawthorne before now. Your description & behavior of it is quite thorough. Thank you.
Thank You for watching. 🙂
Excellent video ! Love this guy!
Thank you!
Thank you!!!! I have been petrified of my city water that smells like a swimming pool and have been paying a fortune for Amquel. I always put 1 1/2 to 2 times the dose as the water is going in to be sure because I know it’s pretty safe. Hopefully I can make this change without having a panic attack (I will keep my Amquel nearby just in case)😂. I really appreciate the time and experience you put into these videos!😊
Thank you, this should help you save some money!
They kill parasites.. ?... which ones...?
Protozoan parasites such as ich, can be effected by UV, but at very slow flow rates. Longer dwell times. Like I said, it may not be possible in larger ponds to use a UV as anything other than a clarifier to kill algae.
Can you please recommend some good landscape (like yourself ) in Minneapolis Area ? Thanks !!
Sorry, I live in New Jersey. Don't know anyone in Minneapolis.
Thank u so much for this information
Thanks for watching!🙂
May I ask why are you huffing and puffing as you talk …. like you have COPD?? You look like a young fit guy who should not be struggling to breath?? And my concern for your health aside ~ I have had koi since 1996 and I’m totally enjoying your videos!! Im from NY and living in Sunny California 🌴for 30+ years where the winters are mild thus koi are easier to keep here during the winters!! I keep a net over my koi pond all year round mainly to keep my koi from jumping out‼️ Thanks, Maria Theresa🐠🐟🎏🌞☀️
No health issues, maybe just nervous. Not sure. 🙂
I really appreciate your videos. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
Thank you for watching
What do you use for glue?
My local pond store has a glue that is made by firestone, who makes the epdm liners. It's called "primer" however. But it's a glue.
Firestone has a few options for glue/adhesive that usually come in cans. It's labeled "primer". but it is an adhesive. Firestone recommends using with splicing tape (two-sided super sticky) between the EPDM liners where you're joining them and then a seam tape which goes on top of the seam. Finally, Firestone recommends using a "lap sealant" which is basically a special type of caulking to seal where the seam tape and the EPDM liner meet.
Hi Chris, wish I had found this video before I rebuilt my pond as I went from a bottom drain into a bead filter which is not bad but could have been better. Do you do consulting work?
I have received several calls, I try to help.
