Winter's Ending (knock wood) - Time to finish indoor projects

New Mexico is getting dumped on! (with that beautiful white stuff)

We've been getting tons of snow in the last few days. It's a good thing I've got enough firewood and propane. I got caught a little off guard - but it's all good. This much snow brings a level of silence that is rare. Very beautiful.

Nearing the end of a long, hard summer

The heat, the bugs, the hail storms, and all the daily challenges have certainly brought me to my knees more than once this summer. I'm just trying to stay grateful, work as hard as I possibly can, and learn the lessons of the desert.

I don't build like a normal person. Building my home, to me anyway, is merely an extension of a creative process as an artist. Why would it be anything else? So, in this video, I'm ruminating on slowing the process and incorporating beauty into the overall build.

Unless you have the proper hose for that tank it required a filter that the line plugs into also clean the pilot light tube with a Q tip and alcohol.
Everyone claiming propane is freezing, then why dont our 500 gallon tanks that heat our homes in winter freeze then? Money on not having a filter.
Great stuff!
Ways to keep that warm
Basically got to keep the propane tank warm build a shed or something over it
Propane tanks do not like cold weather i found that out
Could I use bamboo instead of pvc - the bamboo is split . It might rot. Is the frame just to hold form until cement dries ? If bamboo weakens the structure be held by cement ?
@@MrSethshapiro I think it depends on the thickness of the bamboo, but bamboo has amazing strength, so I don’t see why not. And yes, I use PVC to shape the structure, just like building a large sculpture. In the past I’ve used rebar whenever I want greater strength. There are so many nuances - like playing with different cement mixes. The best suggestion I can make is to make small prototypes as test projects before launching into a large scale endeavor.
@ tks, im gonna try it with bamboo.
I have the same one you do. When I first put the battery in, it would not lite. Then just to make sure I had the battery put in the correct way, I turned the battery around and bingo, it lit in just a few seconds. You need to hold the primer down at least 30-60 seconds. If you are using a 20 pound tank. Make sure you open the gas on. Good luck..these things can be a pain........
I was testing my new one tonight in my tent at -24c ( -11f). It's the single burner like you have. On low it worked for just over an hour then shut off. I lit it again and flame was sputtering. I put a warm 1lb tank on. It lit and I turned it to the high setting. Ran for 20 or 30 min then shut off and would not stay lit for longer than 5 min. Took in the house and warmed everything up. It ran like a champ for an hour on high. My only conclusion is that they don't like that kind of cold.
Awesome! How did you find the land? Pls share resources you used. I'm interested in buying land in the high desert of NM as well. Thanks.
@@nana-l5v6s I did! I scoured online resources mostly - like realtor.com and Zillow (plus other ones that focused on raw land sales only). Those helped tremendously, but there’s no substitute for “boots on the ground” exploration. I also found a very good realtor that I worked with, and have continued to work with.
@@utopiancow Would you share the name of the realtor?
@ you can email me at utopiancow@gmail.com and I will give it to you directly.
You should have a filter also
I just watched a discussion on why modern LED christmas lights don't have the same warmth as classic Christmas lights, because the older lights start by first creating a warm halogen glow and then passing that white light through filters (painted colors on the bulb). The result is that white light can be subtracted into its constituent colors, but these colors can later recombine with other cast light to make subtle changes and variations. The current LED lights only output a pure wavelength in a certain color. Their light can never be combined, because its hard-baked into the appliance itself. I think your house demonstrates the first point on light mixing well! I loved the way you got a purple-orange going there
@@Atylonisus Makes sense. I've really come to appreciate the subtle quality of light here in the high desert. Any kind of artificial light compares poorly to the natural beauty of light that pours in through windows and colored glass, but that recombining aspect and the subtle changes are just stunning. I consider embedding colored glass into walls as a "poor man's stained glass". Nonetheless, the more I do, the more astonishing are these combinations of light. Thanks for your comment and insights!
nice nice!
Bejewelled!
What do you do with the exposed metal? Cut it away when dry?
@@nachonetwork3880 yes, exactly. Once the cementing is complete I cut away the wire lath and clean the glass with a wire brush (a very fine wire brush, so as not to scratch the glass).

I am staying in a decrepit 50 year old rv,doesn't run,was left to rot.It is freezing inside.⁰My propane stove would not work.I put a towel around the 1 lb tank, brought it under the pile of covers the dog and i are under. In about a half hour it worked. This bully dog is a better heater than the real heaters.
@@pattiannepascual I totally get it. I have three big dogs, and we share body warmth nightly! Don’t know how I’d make it through these cold winter nights without them.
Love it!! Been looking to moving to NM sick of Florida
Put the propane tank in your back seat while you and it warm up with the car heat on then take it back in to connect it.
And you need an in line filter

Looks amazing 👏 🤩
Good thing about New Mexico is the weather changes from fall to winter in about 2 weeks, none of this lingering bipolar stuff
Maybe keep a 1 lb tank wrapped in a towel or something in your sleeping bag so the body heat will keep it warm enough to liquify. Then rotate it out with another as need be.
Taking a break to reflect on all you done is healthy, love your work
Not much changed om that side of the house. Good to see.😊

We started full time RVing in 2017. Made our way up to WA where we work camped for 6 years. My Rheumatoid arthritis was off the chain from the moisture and finally realized I was suffering from seasonal depression from the 8 mos of rain. We too have made our way down to New Mexico where the low humidity has put my RA into remission without meds for 2 years now. We started looking for off grid property outside Taos but my wife really needs to be closer population center for her work. New Sub, look forward to future videos.
@@RV_Chef_Life Glad to hear the move has improved your health! That’s amazing! I looked in the Taos area for years, even made offers that mysteriously fell through. Guess it wasn’t meant to be. I finally found land in Cerrillos, almost dead center between ABQ and Santa Fe - a half hour in either direction. I really love it out here. When I’m home I feel the immense desert solitude, but when I need to go to the city I’m not far at all.

Nice looking fountain. I was hoping to hear what you learned why the first one collapsed? I thought you were supposed to keep concrete wet, for hydration curing, for 30 days. Could it have something to do with adding wet new concrete to concrete that is visibly dry? Did it delaminate? Thanks. Blessings.
Thanks! I posted a previous video about the collapse, but basically I did it too hastily the first time around, didn't properly lay the metal lath for the concrete to adhere to. That was the biggest issue. I also played with different mixtures this time around to be sure of its strength.
@@utopiancow Thanks for sharing your experience & wisdom

Im going off grid in northern az. Just found your channel. Ill definitely be using Ferro cement in the mix. 😊
Ferrocement changed just about everything for me - strong, lightweight, sculptural. Good luck on your build!
Holding the water up from running off will also recharge the ground water. For sculpture with cement mixture, it was a wire frame packed with scrunched up paper inside the frame then cement. I think people just use spray foam and not paper now. Some really nice homes have been sculptured the way you are trying to do things with cement. You even have ferro cement boats.
I appreciate the comment. I've been working with/experimenting with ferrocement for about 20 years. It's amazing how versatile it is. But one thing still eludes me: getting the strongest mix possible. I know that the ancient builders made cement that was stronger than stone - way stronger than Portland cement nowadays. Once I find that optimal mix, I think I will have found the holy grail!
@@utopiancow like Roman cement. I like that sea water was the hidden ingredient.
