Why I LOVE "Metroid Prime: Corruption" Despite its Flaws
The Metroid Prime Trilogy is one of the greatest masterpieces in gaming history - but players are divided on how they would rank the three games.
For me, the answer to that question has always been simple: 1, 3, 2.
In this video I'll explain my choice, while also providing some theories about Retro Studios' next game in the series, Metroid Prime: Beyond! Join me, sweet viewer, and let's talk about Metroid Prime!

The switch 2 shouldve been a tablet with a second screen like a 3ds, a little thicker than current switch with a panel that folds up and more ergonomic joycons on either side of the folding section (which would have a camera like a 3ds) that wouldve been the ultimate nintendo console EDIT: as far as TV mode goes, you can have a screen swap button and/or a wii u style pro controller sold seperately
If they did switch up the console, people would still complain. It's the power of a ps4 in your hands and a ps4 pro when docked. It's plenty powerful for nintendo. Its all about the games for them anyway.
But sploon 4
No? Its not split down the middle. 90% of people are happy and 10% aren't.
Haha fair. When I started working on the video I was seeing a lot of hate towards it and my own friends/cousins weren't impressed. As time went on I saw the general consensus was that it was good, but by that point I was already too deep making the video. I'd say it's an 80/20 for happy/sad
TH-cam pants
I heard that the Nintendo switch 2 is going to be as powerful as a PS4 Pro
I hope they add a pen thingy like the Wii U and 3Ds
Dude, we have the price (probably), it’s not much more expensive than the OLED. It’s like 350-370 USD (this isn’t a leak, this is an actual retail price that is live for pre orders in Italy right now) As for innovation… uhhhh, the DLSS that this thing might be using is insanely innovative, and have y’all not seen the mouse feature on the joy cons? Also it is significantly more powerful than the base switch. Sony and Microsoft as well as many other AAA studios have stated that they are committed to the console and will be porting their latest and greatest games. And Phil Spencer has personally vouched for how good it is Also that trailer seriously tickled my autism. Like those sounds were divine
I didn’t know about the mouse feature when I made this but that would be INSANE especially for people who don’t have a PC to get into RTS games and stuff. And yeah dude, people who thought the trailer was “boring”… I’ll never understand them. Such a tickler
I just wanna know mroe abt it 😢
Still has more (non aesthetic) changes than it's rivals consoles. Also, clearly they have more features to announce.
They are trying to avoid the wii to wii u situation so many people didn't know that the wii u was a separate console
Actually that’s a solid rebuttal to my point about wishing they called it the Super Switch - maybe some casual folks might not get it haha
Nintendo is a family company, it's not about being a high power extreme gaming experience, so I really don't get why ppl are mad. So long as the games are good, I really don't care, plus the bigger screen might make it easier to see things so I don't keep holding the screen so close to see details. The switch is still a good consol and does what it's supposed to do, I'm kinda relieved I won't have to get used to another system. The only thing I'm vary of is the attachment of the controllers, and I'll miss the iconic click 😅
Hey you never know, the magnetic SNAPS might be even better lol! Can’t knock it till we try it 😅
@mr.snulch absolutely! I'm gonna wait a bit to see reviews before getting one, though. I'm pretty clumsy, so the lack of a lock makes me antsy for how I handle my switch, like as in me personally - it probably wouldn't be a problem in general or for most other people lol
I mean tbf the switch biggest weakness is the fact its a lost device as its a mobile device you can carry without needing much set up that tries to be a console without the powers of a console. And in the switch 2 they (hopefully) improved both aspects making its a much more portable device and a much stronger device is worthy of being called a console. The switch was a master of none but wasn't a jack of all traits, just not good at anything. While the switch 2 is a jack of all traits So even tho its not ground breaking its a realised version of a ground breaking idea
While I’m not sure I agree with the Switch not being a jack of all trades, I definitely agree that it needs an update to sort of “perfect” what they were going for. Another reason why Switch 2 is something to look forward to!
Need i remind everyone that the DS line exists. Ds, dsi, 3ds, 3dsxl. Feels like another version of that and we're acting like it's a bad thing? I'm excited for it
“It’s good cuz the switch is good and it’s the switch”
Hahah yeah, basically that 😂
The thing is I don't know why people are mad Xbox and PlayStation dose this every time they make a new console so why the one time Nintendo does it everyone is hating on ot
I agree, I was gonna mention that but couldn't fit in the short. The PS1 - PS5 is just a better version of the same thing, nobody complains. Nintendo makes a better version of the same thing ONCE - people complain. I think it's because we've come to expect Nintendo to be the "innovator" in the market. But the Switch already is a masterclass of innovation and it's still untouchable!
@@mr.snulch exactly??? people ask for too much
From what I can see, the switch 2 doesn't have a camera, which probably means we won't be getting a Tomodachi Life remaster/rerelease on the Switch 2 :(
Hahah, maybe Nintendo will release that one day as a Nintendo Smartphone App!
Wait, there is a new idea, THE MOUSE (edit mouse image here)
I didn’t know about that at the time but just looked into it and that is RAD! Maybe they’ll put Civ 7 on this thing and people who don’t own a PC can still play it with the swouse (switch mouse)
I find this conversation particularly hilarious because I’ve heard SO many people BEG Nintendo to make a more powerful switch (not even a switch pro specifically) But when Nintendo finally listened, the fans are like “Wait wai- no u weren’t supposed to do that” But hey, as long as the games are good, I’m a happy customer 😊
Welcome to human nature, people want one thing but then come to the realization they never wanted it in the first place....then demand for more things they never wanted in the first place.
Yeah, in general the hope of Nintendo making a "powerhouse" console 5K ultra HD 60fps kind of thing has been around for a while, but I really do think Nintendo is at their best when they make a slightly less hardcore console and focus on versatility. Odyssey ran like a dream on the Switch! The question remains just how powerful the Switch 2 will be - we shall see.
I wouldn't worry too much since Nintendo will probably do something gimmicky and blue ocean after the Switch 2. Graphical improvements are going to get diminishing returns once you get above the PS4 in terms of power. So they'll need to do something crazy like VR or foldable screens to get everyone's attention again.
I totally agree but didn't have time to fit that into the short. The time will come when tech moves forward enough that the Switch will be antiquated and they'll need something spicy, such as VR. But that time hasn't come yet at all. So I see no reason to be upset about an updated Switch. Maybe a "Switch 3" would be overkill and they'll need to innovate to stay relevant - but not yet!
"At the end of the day, it's all about the games". This is why I think console arguments are ultimately pointless.
Haha I couldn't agree more. There is something to be said about consoles sometimes, but really there's no reason to be upset by the Switch 2 because the only thing that will matter will be the games a year from now. As a console, the Switch is conceptually a great way to game and isn't begging for a change just yet.
@@mr.snulch At the end of the day, Nintendo's rival is the Steam Deck and it's not like that is going to attract normies, the latter is for hardcore gamers. At this point, the most I want out of the Switch 2 is an improved eshop and better joycons. The latter especially because I don't want to buy a 3rd party controller again.
I've never even heard of this term before, not even once until I saw this video. Can't say it annoys me as much since I only saw you use the term. Also, in all fairness, Jaffe said he didn't like Dread, he never said he disliked the series.
Other M does suck, yes.
Prime 2 is interesting because u can find videos like this making great points why prime 1 is better yet there are many videos defending prime 2 and making solid arguments for it. Like u said people have started coming to prime 2’s defense and those two videos u listed from kingk and pgreviews making great points for prime 2.
I just beat prime 3 on hypermode difficulty and oh man it was awful. Nearly every encounter requires hypermode to efficiently deal with the threats and boss fights take ages. I was using prime hack and genuinely needed to use noclip at points just to try and survive. Im no slouch either, I got a top 200 100% speedrun record for metroid prime 1 and have been playing the trilogy for nearly 15 years now. I nearly gave up 3 times on prime 3 hypermode, that is how painful it was
I think Witness-like is the best alternative. So Tunic would be a witnesslike soulslike zeldalike. But i still think metroidbrainia is best. If i type into google "metroidbrainia" its clear what im asking for, while its absolutely not for phrases like "knowledge game"
I disagree with you. And prime 1 isn’t a great prequel.
"Mystowlain" should be the genre name ---> Mystery + Knowledge + Brain
I really need to replay this game. I have only ever played it once back when it first came out. I really did enjoy it if I remember correctly. Plus it gives me an excuse to replay Echoes as well. Already replayed the first one about a year ago.
I disagree with your title but to be fair, I haven't played the game in years so what do I know? I believe this game had a much healthier development cycle and one of the main problems was that it was overly ambitious so a lot of stuff had to be changed and removed. I liked it a lot more than the first one. This was a great video though.
Ive never understood why people are so defensive about this one. It's not a bad game, but the flaws in this one are so much more aggravating than in Prime 1 where the only big issue was the backtracking and how item collection is kind of a pain seeing as you can't mark areas for future visits and the map doesn't tell you when an item is in the room like the 2D games. The ammo system is a Tual garbage, why do beans need ammo all of a sudden? It makes beam combos useless with how much they use up, and enemies are such damage sponges especially in the dark world. The idea of using a beam depending on the world is cool, Prime 1 played with the idea of bean effectiveness but I felt I had such little incentive to use the beams in Echoes. The dark world's difficulty is fine, but it became this cycle of just waiting in light bubbles a while which frankly gets really boring and kills the game's pacing. The bosses are generally better though except for the Spider guardian which is just tedious
The world designs in MP3 are fucking amazing. My 10 year old self was blown away when I got the game. I'm curious to see what Retro will do after all these years and without alot of the original crew.
Assassin's Creed games BROUGHT me to this video! The Pacing is so shit it made think about "pacing" in videogames. Nice video btw.
Thanks! Yeah I had to dedicate an entire section to that one. Like they're cool games in so many ways, but damnnn that pacing 💀
Like Peter Quill before me: W H A T..........
Well, Prime 2 is my favourite game of the trilogy, so, when I saw this I decided to watch it as a test of my own convictions You make good points in a lot of places, I just don't agree with all of them, or think some are actually not faults at all The keyhunt in prime 2 has issues, yeah, but being "longer and more tedious" is frankly untrue, not only are there less keys to get, 9 vs 12 (well, really 11 since one is right there at the temple), but the dead luminoth keybearers always appear in rooms where the keys are found in the dark world, which imo makes finding them monumentally easier. It's definitely not "good" I think it's really bad how you both need the dark visor to start collecting keys in the first place AND half of them require the light suit to get, (which is also a problem prime 1 had, so many of the artifacts require the plasma beam), but I don't think it's worse than prime 1. Corruption definitely got it right. But, one thing I will say in favour of the Sky Temple is that it's a lot more clear that it is the endgame- nothing really says that about the artifact temple in prime 1, but if you're exploring in prime 2 (and it's a Metroid game, so, you should be), you'll find the Sky Temple entrance about half way through the game, and after already being familiar with needing 3 keys to enter the dark temples in the sub areas it should click right away that this is your final objective, and I think finding it at this point in the game rather than super early in Prime 1 (and also right next to your ship) feels good, it'll stick with you as you complete Torvus and Sanctuary. The annihilator beam yeah is pretty underwhelming aside from the Sonic Boom beam combo, which is awesome to use against Emperor Ing. I never found the beams having ammo to be an issue, yes the game should've communicated that boxes drop ammo too but once you do know this staying topped up is pretty easy, whenever you're low on ammo the game always drops a huge amount of pickups, and honestly if the beams didn't have ammo they would be way too overpowered, especially the dark beam which contrary to expectations is still effective against some darklings, charged dark beam + missile kills dark commandos and dark metroids. I also don't agree fully that the weapons aren't paced well, yes you get 2 beams very early but there's still the super missile, power bombs, and other charge combos interspersed throughout, so you are still getting new weapons to try out. I think the environments in Prime 2 are amazing, they may not be as "colourful" as prime 1, but they're more unique, and I like that. Honestly the "stockness" of Prime 1's environments was always my biggest criticism of it, it's really just generic plant, ruins, fire, and ice world, with the lower parts of the Phazon Mines with the giant luminescent mushrooms and phazon feeling like the only truly 100% "alien" part of the game, something Prime 2 doesn't struggle with as much because it's environments are more varied, and Sanctuary might just be the best designed area in the whole series, honestly. But yeah it was interesting to hear your perspective and thank you for sharing it.
I think you are missing the point from the introduction of the metroidbrainia concept. It seems this term was first suggested as a way to label knowledge-gated open worlds. And to use the "metroidvania" concept (which in contrast is collection-gated open worlds) was the simplest way to describe it using names or ideas people already knew. We don't need a name to put games in the same thematic category as metroid and castlevania, we need a new term to describe games where the player is evolving instead of the character he/she plays as. Innovation is what being discussed here, not simply game-grouping. In my opinion, what you are defending is the "metroidvania like" genre, which is totally different. Then it makes sense to remove so many titles (traditionally included in the metroidbrainia genre) from the list, simply because they are not built upon the same game designs as these old retro games. Within the "metroidvania like" genre, I totally agree that The Witness or Outer Wilds should be removed. But what use would this term be ? Also, your arguments are strangely put together : with "metroidbrainia", people connected games because of the idea that games could have dynamical meaning, because the meaning of all of these experiences evolve as the player gains knowledge (which is why most of these experience cannot be played again : you cannot forget what you've learned). On the other hand, you completely put this observation aside, and cast abitrary rules defining metroidbrainia, and mocking people for not sticking to your personnal criteria. It would be like saying blue roses are not roses, because roses are supposed to be rose : you cannot redefine langage because of your own beliefs, and insult everyone else for not following your seemingly random rules. I must say that your condescending tone doesn't really help furthering the discussion. Sadly, not the greatest way to bring a late contribution to a decade long discussion.
Huh. Having the beams explained like that makes sense. No wonder I love Prime 3 with its several beam upgrades.
you get it man. echoes is probably my favorite but i havent replayed corruption since release, i should really change that. amazing video <3
I was playing all the games to prepare for the 4th, but after playing 2 and getting VERY frustrated, and seeing how tedious it is, along with your issues and what I'd have to do at the end, I'm skipping this and going straight to the 3rd. Thanks.
@@JonathanRobinson_RC yeah we’re in the same boat there. I know a lot of people love this game but I find it pretty tedious and hard to get to the finish line. I think you’ll LOVE Corruption though - at least I do!!
@@mr.snulchI enjoy motion controls, so Corruptions is my favorite.
I wish the beam ammo was infinite, it's very annoying having to juggle three different types of ammo with different ways to get them when the only thing we could have worried about was missile ammo.
I played a bit of Prime 1 13 years ago before dropping it, only playing it again after the remaster dropped. I played through most of Echoes on and off over the course of 13 years, so I have no idea how good or bad of a sequel this game is to Prime. A better game? Hard to say. A good sequel? Not really.
Never thought corruption being a "bastardization" was the general concensus. From what I've seen, most fans love all 3 games. It has a lot of similar complaints as Metroid Fusion, but they're still fantastic games and loved. because they still maintain core metroid elements with having a good atmosphere and still having at least a bit of exploration. Other M on the other hand... I will also admit, there's some purist fans out there who only like the original NES game and super and don't like ANY change to gameplay
Hmm I agree with the key problem at the end but that’s really just annoying if you hate the game already. There’s ammo refill stations quite frequently around bosses and crates everywhere. So unless you just spam weapons and don’t pick up any upgrades it never really is that big of an issue to me and makes the game more challenging and unnerving. The annihilator beam is a bit underpowered for a last weapon but it does instakill ing with powered up light rings while also attracting them. It also restores both light and dark ammo when destroying crates. I will admit prime 2 can get tedious after beating it the first time and replaying it but that’s also an issue with the entire series. I will also say it’s biggest issue for me was pacing with its biggest strength being it’s atmosphere and good collection of unique bosses. Prime 1 had issues with difficulty and long backtracking sequences but a nice gameplay loop of collection and interesting environments to keep tedium somewhat lessened. But you can make the argument prime 1 combat is a bit dumbed down because you just spam 1 weapon and everything pretty much dies instantly with prime 2 for me having a more strategic approach. But again it’s weakest element being it’s pacing which is integral to this style of game and where they seemed to mess up the most.
I'm someone who ranks 3 last, but not for any of the reasons mentioned in this video. I actually do like the tone of the game being more actiony and epic with lots of set-pieces. The fact its so unique helps it more than hurts it simply because its linearity is more obvious than previous games. I want to also make it clear that ALL of the prime games are linear, not just 3. Prime 1 only ever allows progress to go in a specific order without deviation except for 2 moments. You can skip the Charge beam up until you get Super Missiles, but then you still have to have them to progress so there is NO point in skipping them when they are right next to the path to Bombs early in the game, so you are actively wasting time skipping them. You can also get the Grapple Beam or the X-ray visor one before the other (so you can grab the X-ray first, then the Grapple, or vice versa). BUT you can't get either one earlier than that, and must get both in order to make progress, rendering the choice meaningless. The only other thing in Prime 1 and 2 that would be non-linear is the final key hunt. But that's just re-exploring previous areas for padding so its not really fun exploration outside of the first playthrough. 3 is just as linear, but it doesn't hide it as well as the first 2 with their maze-like worlds. You go to planet 1 and explore A to B, then go to planet 2 to explore A but then going back to Planet 1 to explore C. Then back to Planet 2 to Explore B but then you go to Planet 3 to go to A but then have to go back to 2 to go to C to go to 3 B, then 4 A back to 3 C and so on. So you can see the pattern, take 1 step into this brand new world only to hit a brick wall that forces you back to the previous world to 100% it before getting to explore the rest of the new world, except for 1 small section that you can't do until you reach the newer world and hit its brick wall. This gets a bit annoying because of being forced to use your ship so much which is just a loading screen. If there was a way to explore C BEFORE heading to planet 2 it would save SO much time while changing nothing about the experience. Because 1 and 2 try to hide their linearity with complex maze-like worlds, this actually makes them less linear when you do randomizers, so that's cool. So they COULD have been non-linear but they just didn't let you. But 3 just can't be non-linear unfortunately (or at least, it can't be in any meaningful way). This makes it harder to go back to 3 and enjoy it for its exploration because its so samey. I also think the item balancing is the worst in 3. Prime did good with it because all the upgrades were useful and the expansions were usable because Missiles had various ways to use up quickly making having more of them actually useful. You can Shoot missiles quickly and the beam combos are useful and eat through missiles, so all the expansions feel important. The Health Tanks are the least useful as Prime isn't the hardest but are still really good to have, so Prime has the best balance by far. Prime 2 nerfed missiles unbelieveably, making them slower to use while also removing the speed trick from 1. The Beam combos were worthless and out of the way, and were so slow that you really couldn't go through a lot of missiles. So Missile expansions were mostly worthless past 30 total missiles. But the Beam Ammo upgrades were at least useful, though the beam ammo system isn't the best so they feel like bandaids rather than powerups. Though the increased difficulty made the Health Tanks even more useful. But Prime 3 had the same problem of not needing missile expansions, but even worse as the missiles are at their worst in 3 and are so slow that you'd never need more than 20 throughout the game. The Health expansions are still good thanks to the Phazon beam, but proper use of it makes it to where you don't need more than 1 or 2 extra tanks to destroy every enemy. But the worst part is that the expansions are almost entirely those 2 types with not much else. You can get the Phazon Missiles, but I genuinely don't know what use they have as they do so little they are functionally worthless. And the Ship missiles are LITERALLY useless (that isn't an exaggeration either), there are only a few predetermined spots you can use ship missiles once each, and so you'd only ever need about 4 total, and everytime you use 1 you are guaranteed to get a refill in the next crate you blow up. So you are NEVER without ship missiles by the next time you need them. So the expansions genuinely do nothing to help you and you can't even use them up to pretend they are useful. And that's it, there are no other optional, exploration rewarding, items. So all the extras feel like padding where the real reward is just figuring out how to get them, they could just be tokens and nothing changes. This really compounds with the linear level design to really make 3 feel lesser than the other games, or less fun to replay from an exploration standpoint. and THAT is the reason that the combat and setpieces and action save the game. I really wish someone would rebalance some things so that the expansions feel more useful, that would really fix a lot. I really like the game, but I find the others more replayable for those reasons, but the combat and atmosphere in 3 is really good, I just wish the level design was more engaging and exploration more rewarding. So if 4 is just 3's combat but with a more exploration focused game, then that'd be the best possible game. Though I genuinely hope they can make it non-linear in ways the trilogy never did. Even if its hidden ways to do things out of order in an otherwise seemingly linear world, like with Zero Mission or Dread. Sorry for the long post, hopefully it didn't feel rant-y, and thank you for reading all of it!
Fuck man your videos are actually really fucking good wtf , its insane who good they are , your literally one of my favourite TH-camrs dont you dare quit , your videos are like a drug to me , do more game design videos pls , i liked the pacing one , maybe level design layout next , i never seen one on TH-cam most of them talk about the looks and not the layout
Cool video! :)
They do a reimagining of the game and make it more fun to play. I liked the game a lot back when it came out, but yea i see what ur saying... To me echoes felt kinda like metal gear solid 2. Even thou i didn't like it in comparison to the first one, i still appreciated the guts of it trying something very different.
Since the crown of this genre belongs to OW/tunic, I think its fair to call it: -OW-like -Tunicwild -Outertunic or someoneelse with better sense of naming
Yea but that emperor ing phase 2 music is DopppppeeeeSauce !!!! 🌀
Prime 3s flaws: - way too easy - anticlimactic ending after the build up dark samus in prime 2 - beam mechanics from prime 1+2 (and hunters) got removed like beam combos and switching of beams - no real build up to the hunters in prime 3, i couldn't care less when i killed them in the story. - shorttrimmed visor system, ship visor is basically useless, u use it only 2-3x times ingame -rockets are super fat and ugly and the smoke stream blocks your view for a few seconds
