Ellie Barber AKA Ollella’s career as a musician started early, when she sang before she could talk. Trained as a classical cellist since the age of nine, the Seattle indie-folk musician merges her technical background with authoritative vocals and live-looping. Described as “really outstanding” by NPR Music’s Bob Boilen and “so tastefully done” by Michelle Zauner (AKA Japanese Breakfast), Ollella blends the acoustic with the contemporary, folk with pop, and tenacity with softness. She was twice a finalist in the NPR Tiny Desk Contest (2024, 2022), has had music featured in film and TV, and is a frequent collaborator with others. She finds herself drawn to music because it unlocks a particularly organic flavor of humanity - one that fits the type of world she believes in.

Lyrics:
I remember when we would draw
Orca whales all over your walls
Pirouettes up and down the halls
The world was big, I was so small
On cloudy days you poured us tea
Milk and honey with chamomile
There was no sickness it couldn’t heal
Or so I thought, as I sipped it with my meal
Because of you, I write my songs
You knew I had it in me all along
At some point those memories
Moved on to the hospital
At first just some, then it was all
Sterilized with alcohol
We went for walks slowly in the leaves
You talked nonsense, mind in the weeds
There were doctors, there were IVs
Then we sat silently and grieved
Because of you, I write my songs
You knew I had it in me all along
At that time I thought this just was
The way it is with the people you love
They’d come around, you’d do fun stuff,
Then they’d fly off on the wings of a dove
I still make tea kettle tea
Hoping that you’ll come home to me
I dream of naps nestled in your knees
It was your love that set me free

I heard your song on NPR 2 weeks ago, and I can't stop thinking about it. It's so beautiful, and most of all--beautifully performed.. It brings back so many memories of wonderful experiences in the past. Is there a copy of the lyrics somewhere? And maybe chords? Can I purchase?
Hi @janice6541 - the lyrics are posted in the description. We have sheet music - feel free to contact me if you'd like a copy - though have yet to post a chord chart. The chords are mostly D and G though if you want to figure it out by ear :)
Thanks for posting. This is amazing. Very moving.
Man oh man this hits somewhere so deep in me, I keep bawling like a baby. Your song digs up the grief from the loss of my BFF/husband from 2017. So glad I heard this on NPR last week Thank you so much for this.
Her voice makes me cry...the good kind.
I cry every time I hear Tea Kettle Tea.
What a soulful, heartfelt voice. She needs to get very well known and well-traveled to bring this music to the rest of us. Fantastic.
So glad I had npr on this morning. Heard this and from the first note you sing with the strings behind seriously hit an emotion not many songs can do. Your song made me remember the memories of my mom who passed from brain cancer in 2018. Thank you for this beautiful song!
This b***ch can sing, and play....AND write. Hurts.
Moving. touching. So sweet. 💙
Came here right after I heard the (re)broadcast on NPR. Beautiful music!
Wow... her vocal timbre and phrasing remind me of one of my favorite UK singers, June Tabor! ❤❤❤❤
Celtic chant with stringed instruments pulling on my heart strings. Transports me to a steep ocean inlet listening to musical echoes 🥰
Wow! You really tapped into the spirt world on that one. EXCELLENT
Something so beautiful I sat in silence after.
How can you not weep performing this every time. The music alone was enough but adding the lyrics definitely sent it over the edge. What a moving, beautiful piece.
I just heard this on the radio…stopped me from what I was doing…choked me right up thinking about my dad…who is now gone…and my mother…who is still here, and all she has done for young children. Thank you.
Same...my 93 old dad passed a month ago...for some reason I was not choked up about it (like the rest of my family was), thought there was something wrong with me... Well, this tune helped a lot..❤❤
Same here. Was driving along when this came on the radio. Made me write down her name. She deserves much success.
Beautiful 😊
Oh my goodness.
Absolutely blown away by this piece. Thank you for sharing, glad to have discovered your work through NPR.
holy moly! that voice 😲
“At that time I thought this just was The way it is with the people you love They’d come around, you do fun stuff Then they fly off on the wings of a dove” -> me crying *every* goddamn time
This song entrances me from the get-go and draws me completely into a world of nostalgia and heart and grief and joy and profound beauty 🥲😭🙌
dawwww shucks @halleygregmusic <3 <3
I love it ❤💚
So beautiful and profund !
This is magnificent!!
This is beautiful!
There is something so touching, memorable, and cathartic about this piece. I wouldn’t be able to perform it without crying. Indeed, I bawled my eyes out listening to it, but I keep coming back to it because it’s also soothing and so unlike anything I’ve heard.
Thanks so much for your sweet comment. It took me 6 months of practicing this song to be able to play it without crying, and sometimes it still happens during a performance out of the blue ❤
Really enjoyed this a great deal. Beautiful arrangement, lovely swaying vocals! Good luck with Tiny Desk! 🎶❤️🎶
Coming home!!! So beautiful. Fill the air with your music!!!
so wonderful!!!!! i feel like i could get lost in this song.
There's your winner.
Beautiful many times over!
Simply lovely. So enjoy your music. At times it sounds similar to Scottish traditional . Really hope you do it this time.
