When you go back and watch this, the things Southgate does all of a sudden make sense. We all sit crying saying ‘why isn’t this guy playing, why is Southgate still picking this guy, why doesn’t he give X a chance’ One of the biggest things Southgate has instilled in the England side is familiarity. Players know their jobs, who they’re playing with, they’re familiar with each other on a personal level and know exactly what they’re going to be doing when they get on the plane to go play for England. He’s not perfect and he’s made mistakes, but watching this game and the analysis after if a prime example of what comes from a manager chopping and changing too much.

Brasilian fans love to exaggerate and say that this was their “C” team when in reality it was more like their B team (at worst), or an understrength A team (at best). But “C” team? Really? 😂 With the likes of Dani Alves, Robinho, Julio Baptista, Gilberto Silva, Elano, Juan, Maicon, Gilberto… Argentina still should’ve won the game with the remarkable squad they had, no excuses, but if you watch the whole match Argentina were quite unlucky (own goal, got the woodwork twice, a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside..) and for large periods of the game were actually the better team. Credit to Brasil, second-string lineup but they were absolutely lethal and ruthless on the counter attack, but at times very fortunate as well. And really I remember at the time the only really big name players for Brasil that were available at the time but were missing from this squad were Dida, Lucio, Emerson, Ronaldinho and Kaka. And while they are massive stars to be missing, the rest of the squad would not have looked much more different to this one. A Brasil “A” team would not have had much more to offer at the time. Roberto Carlos and Cafu had already retired a year earlier while Ronaldo el Fenómeno was injured. And if you want to really get picky, Argentina were missing their star striker Hernan Crespo for this final after he was injured in the group stage Vs USA and they were also missing many star players themselves from this tournament - Walter Samuel, Martin Demichelis, Juan Pablo Sorin, Pablo Zabaleta, Sebastian Battaglia, Maxi Rodríguez, Marcelo Gallardo, Andrés D’Alessandro, Ángel Di Maria, Kily González, Ariel Ortega, Javier Saviola,, Sergio Agüero, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Luciano Figueroa, Gonzalo Higuain and Martin Palermo… All players in-form and available for Argentina at that time. But no one ever says this was Argentina’s “B” team.
