I like the mods. especially the gun removal
What CG are you planning?
Just picked one of these up yesterday! looking forward to the build.
Great kit but definitely "Old School". Advice? build tail surfaces light as possible, you will require a lot of nose weight to balance. Seriously think of moving LG forward, even a little bit. Mine was moved approx. 3/4" and it is still light on the mains.
Great stuff! I like the custom stand for it.
I usually build a custom stand during the build of my models. I find it makes working on it a pleasure when it fits perfectly on a stable stand.
Beautiful workmanship.. i love Balsa USA Kits.i just finished watching the previous chapters. Very impressive. I have a 1/3 scale balsa usa piper cub that i bought from an estate sale that was partially started and he too was a fanimal builder. Wings complete and fuse 50% done. I have the 1/4 scale version too from the same sale partially started. John from Hayden Idaho
Whoa, whoa, whoa... Where is SPAD part 10.. ? I spent a lovely rainy Sunday a couple of weeks ago watching parts 1 through 9, and now it's a SPIT...!
The Spad build has slowed down for the Summer, well actually pretty much stopped, so there isn't any new material to show. The Spitfire was completed and flown several years ago and my channel will also show builds of other RC panes I have built and documented. The Spad build will continue, just not as fast as during the winter season. Thanks for the comment.
Lovely plane, mostly on floats; great story, thank you. 🙏🏼
Such an iconic wing design! Looking absolutely gorgeous.
Couldn't agree more! The wing, the fuselage, it just looks like a thoroughbred.
Another great build Jim, getting those tubes in the right place must have been a nightmare….
Yes it was! I think I spent more time on that one modification then all the rest. Tks for the comment.
Very impressive! I would love to do a project like this, but lack the space..
Tks for the comment. I use my basement workshop during the winter build and transition out to the garage during warmer weather. Matter of fact, just moved to the garage 2 days ago. Assembly and painting is done in the garage .... keeps the missus happy!
I built and flew my 1/4 scale BUSA Spad XIII last year. I used Oratex fabric and latex paint avoiding the fumes and explosive hazards of dope and fabric methods. Mine balanced perfectly with the motor (eflite power 160) and electric flight batteries (10s) right of front behind the grill. No additional lead required and balanced perfectly. Very nice flier with no trim needed on the maiden. Unique colour schemes available with a little research. I can actually fly quite fast as I found out, so I don't make a habit of that. It does have presence and will make a great everyday flier.
Just curious, you probably noted my comments on the poor quality of the balsa in my kit. Did you have any issues with yours? Congratulations on your build and successful maiden. Can you post a picture? Tks
@@jimgavel Emailed you a photo. Yes the 1/16th ribs were a surprise and a few were broken due to handling a few times. Also if I was to do another one, I would use Sitka spruce for the spars.
Really enjoy the videos , hope to do this same model some day !
Glad your enjoying the videos. It's like doubling my pleasure; building the model and sharing it with other modelers. Appreciate the comment.
Looks great nice job 👍
Tks, appreciate the comment.
NIIIIICE 👌🏻
Tks, appreciate the comment.
I'm really enjoying your build, thanks for sharing!.
Tks, really appreciate the feedback.
Wow, great work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Coming out great 👍
90 % done, only 90 % more to go!!
Great work! Having recently built the BUSA 1/4 SPAD, I know what you have gone through. Again, great work!!
Tks Nelson. I assume you have already flown this plane and I'm curious. My plans have a CG on the printed plan however there is a another CG pasted on over that one which shows a more forward CG. What did you use and what was your flying experience? Tks
Hi Jim, Thanks for the contact. The maiden flight of my SPAD will be in the spring. My flying buddy Larry built one at the same time and was able to get flights in before winter. What we experienced is that his SPAD appeared to fly a bit tail heavy. Yet the CG was exactly as called out on the BUSA plan sheet. During the build, we both had anticipated the need for added weight up front due to the short moment forward. The cowls were loaded up with lead. Subsequent flights with Larry's SPAD were more comfortable, and he had no complaints. It flew well and he plans no adjustments. Knowing this, I plan to go ahead and put mine in the air. Go from there. We both have DLE 35s in the SPADs. We used Behrs exterior latex paint on Sig Koverall. My YT channel (Nelson Carpenter) has many videos I've uploaded of our SPADs and other WWI acft. If you look closely at our two SPADs in the videos, you'll see that the paint schemes are a mirror image. We also fly a BUSA 1/4 Pups along with several others in our club flying WWI acft. I'll be following your progress. Feel free to contact me.
Hi Nelson, Thanks for the info. Nice to touch base with a fellow Spad builder. I checked out your Spad videos and I'm impressed with how well they both came out. I've only seen a couple videos of the BUSA 1/4 scale Spad in flight and yours looks really nice in the air. If you've watched all my videos, you would've noticed that I too loaded up the nose bowl with lots of lead ....... hope it's enough! I'm very envious of your RC Club, it looks like a Club I would love to belong to. Due to the pandemic and older club members leaving the hobby(RIP), we only have 5 members left and the rest fly foamy ARFs. I've been building and flying for 50 yrs now and I miss the local contact with like minded builders. Thanks for reaching out and I appreciate any and all comments. @@NelsonCarpenter-J3flyah
Excellent. Keep em coming.😅
Tks, appreciate the comments.
Hi Jim, Also building BUSA Spad, really interested in the colors and type of paint that you will be using. Very nice series!
Hi Don, The Spad is going to be covered with Sig Koverall and nitrate dope. I have used ordinary latex house paint in the past (Behr) and have had really good results. Unfortunately, with 7 different colours and the current price for a litre, the smallest size I can get, at $35.00/lt, I have to look at some other options. I'm considering the so called hobby/craft paints at this point. I have had some experience with them in the past and have been impressed. However, I have never sprayed them so that is something I will have to experiment with. Building always involves some experimenting. Lol
Great model, but i hope you go on with the Spad?
The Spad is still ongoing and I hope to have another update this mth. The Spitfire is more or less a filler as it has been some time since my last installment and I wanted to put something on the channel.
superb craftsmanship!
Tks, really appreciate the comment. I'm certainly not a "Master" builder, but I do enjoy adding details to my models.
Très bon travail !!bonne continuation..😊
I love the SPAD XIII, 17 years ago i constructed one only by using fotos : And I used the original profile from 1917 ! My construction separates the Hull behind the pilots seat. The front part of the hull an the wings always stay together . The rear section is fixed on the airfield with two steel wires in two minutes . since 17 years i have fun with it. Today I use an Zenoah ZG 62 Motor , the best machine for the airplane , it has the right weight an more than enough power in every situation . If you are interestet i can send you an report of the building. It was published in the FMT in the year 2008 (one of the best RC journals in europe)
Hi Hans, I'm very interested in how you accomplished the fuselage separation and subsequent attachment with the empennage controls. Yeah, if you have the pictures/video on TH-cam, please send me the link. Tks.
@@jimgavel Hi , send me your email then you get a copy of the article in the fmt
Great videos I have that kit in my stash soon to be buiilt
It's a good kit. I'd probably have it done by now if I could leave well enough alone, but that's not in my nature.
VERY interesting.
Glad you think so!
impressive skills! the details are mind blowing!
Thanks, I've been building model RC planes for 50 yrs now. This is the 2nd I've attempted as a scale project.
Beautiful build and thanks for sharing !
Tks, appreciate the comment. I have always enjoyed other modelers builds and the stories they posted. Always learnt something new from them. Hopefully my attempt will help some others in their builds.
awesome!
Thanks! Working on engine install now. Another video coming soon.
nice looker!
Tks, out of all the WW1 fighters, the Spad has to be the slickest looking.
Beautiful 👍👍👍👍😊😊
Tks, it's coming together slowly.
Love this..the SPAD XIII was my favorite aircraft from WWI when I was young...,I built the Revell 1/28 scsle kit...( what a bastard scake that was!!) In the mid..late 60s...
Can't remember what scale mine was but the BUSA Spad at 1/4 scale is a whole different ballgame. I'm really enjoying the build and modifications, time will tell if they work!!
i built the revelle plastic model and the guillows spad xlll around 1960.
