    So - and now *"WHY is the Arctic Ocean warming faster than other oceans?"* If I don't miss too much - you explained how wonderful the NPP's support you tracking Atlantic water. Which is fine... (Not the NPP's are fine - they are a disaster - just the unintended luck for you as scientist I mean is fine :)) And if I don't misunderstood the lady in the beginning: "The AMOC makes the North Atlantic warmer" Which is true and trivial....

    What kind of motors are you using to actuate the fingers? The tensioning looks really tight? How much torque does it produce? Im designing a soft hand robot right now, but I’m not sure the servos I’m using will have enough torque to drive my fingers. I’m using a relatively compliant material, but I’m just curious, as I may need to incorporate something like this in my design for experimentation. Keep up the great work!

    To what extent is the precipitation caused by osmotic imbalance vs simply evaporation? Some minerals are water soluble without needing acid. Even if there was no co2 imbalance, enough heat would remove the acid and leave behind the rock

    • @mml_ethzurich
      @mml_ethzurich 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The question addresses several points: Chemical equilibrium: The CO2 in the solution (drip water) and in the cave air are initially not in chemical equilibrium. This is because the drip water is enriched with the CO2 from the soil (where we typically find very high CO2 concentrations) while cave air has lower CO2 concentrations. Solubility of CaCO3: Some minerals dissolve in pure water. This is not the case for CaCO3, which can be considered as nearly insoluble in water. With CO2 dissolving in (and acidifying) the water, the solubility of CaCO3 in water increases. Evaporation as driver for carbonate precipitation: Humidity in caves is typically around 100%, so evaporation will not occur. Even if (for whatever reasons) only the CO2-independent solubility played a role, there will typically be no reason, why the CaCO3 would precipitate (if there is no change in temperature, which mostly is true for natural cave systems).

    People don't want to hear that it's wrong, so a video illustrating how it is wrong will not be a popular thing. Modern science is led by math. "The wheels on the bus go round and round." This song describes everything you see a bus do exactly like math does, but it is not an understanding of a bus. The variables in gravity math are likely incidental, not causal. It's not that math is a universal language, rather, math is a procedural path to a paradigm that allows rote memory dependent people with little creative nature to thrive. That's why "laws" are touted for cause when they are just mnemonic devices to remember what it does (has its place, but way overdone). There is a mechanism to everything. Locking into a mistaken math analogy will fool humans forever, because math is like concrete. In basic mechanics, you think angular momentum causes the gyroscopic effect, and that FOLLOWS the right-hand rule (???), but it's wrong. th-cam.com/video/Sip_9ew2RjA/w-d-xo.html

    I would have like to have seen more information on how to answer the three initial question posed by Hattie? When you answer "Where an I going?", are you just restating the learning objective or goal?

    • @mml_ethzurich
      @mml_ethzurich 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karin. You're absolutely right, it would be great to have more Hattie in there. One of the issues is always lenght-wise. So we try not to make the videos too long, but use it rather to give an overview on some studies, topic etc. Our videos are produced within courses, so the videos are never stand-alone videos. More context is always provided via the course material at ETH. Hence, in our youtube publications these additional material is not included - which is a pitty, I understand. We still hope that it may have given you some insights and an overview.
