The 'Little Western' Model Railway
Slovakia
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ต.ค. 2021
A place to document my adventures in building, maintaining and of course running a model railway.
The railway is based on a Section of the Reading-Taunton Mainline around 1943 consisting of a Mainline, Junction and a small branch.
The main stock is of course GWR styled Locomotives and rolling stock, but occasionally we may have some visitors!
Join me as I re-venture into this exciting hobby once more!

Great video, James! Love how this one shares a lot of the fine details my O gauge version has. Bachmann did very well on it!
Thanks Rob, completely agree, Bachmann did a grand job with this one. Looking forward to seeing what Rapido bring to the table. - James
Hornby are finished, When you have Accurascale and Bachmann with fabulous detail, ie Hornby railroad hst? Or Accurascale Deltic practically same price.
Firstly, thanks for watching and for your comment. :)I would say they are at risk now, with TT120 going to take a few years to establish (if it does) and pushing releases back in favour of slightly tweaked already overproduced models... it's a precarious time. - James
Hi, very honest opinion on Hornby’s let down of an announcement last week, I’m not a fan of Railroad products because they are overpriced ex Lima products from the 80’s & 90’s, I’m not a Hornby fan as such but I do like the look of the hush hush in grey livery, I did buy a rebuilt hush hush a few years ago from Kernow’s which was at a seriously great price I couldn’t resist, by adding a steam generator is good but a firebox glow would be a step in the right direction and the facility to fit other sound decoders would probably tempt me into maybe getting one, I’m not interested in the HM7000 system in anyway so it’s a no from me, thanks for sharing.
@stormmyStormmy Firstly thanks for watching. I tend to agree with you, albeit that there are "upgraded" versions of some older tooling GWR Locos there (the 4-4-0 County, 4-6-0 County, Dean Single and Hall specifically) but else you are right, it's a dumping ground for older tooling they don't want to update. As for the HushHush, this is exactly the point it shouldn't have been done, some have a few already and it's still missing features. Nevermind, maybe they will learn. Keep your eyes peeled for HM7000 on my channel soon, I don't think I will convert everything, and I will explain why later, but I am intrigued. Many thanks for your comment- James
@@thelittlewesternmodelrailway Hi, I’m not knocking their system I just want to support a better established system that gives you so much more than what the HM7000 offers, Hornby should concentrate on making very good products like they did when they were market leaders, I guess that will be a tall order because they don’t seem to put the work in and cut too many corners to save cost at the customers expense, they could make their smoke/vapour system universally controlled but they want it on their platform only, I’d rather not have the system because of that reason, I’m sure their system will become an item you can fit to your trains in years to come as the technology improves.
I agree - The Hush Hush I would not buy - but a Merchant Navy or similar Light Pacific (rebuilt or not) with a steam generator would certainly interest me. Though it would presumably still be a bit expensive!
I would also presume added o er expense 😁 Thanks for watching - James
The Railroad HST tooling is ex-Lima tooling and isn't as old as 1976, that was the original Hornby HST tooling which is no longer used. Stands up well in terms of moulding, but the lighting functionality is poor, only on the motor car, there is literally nothing in the dummy car.
Thanks for watching 😁 I knew it was Lima tooling, and the '76 was last I could remember. I appreciate the corrections. - James
@@thelittlewesternmodelrailway Hornby don’t really have a lot to offer these days other than a few good looking steam trains, diesel wise they are years behind other manufacturers and their wagons are not even worth talking about, the only things they produce that interest me are their coaches when they end up in mega sales, their all round lack of investment in 00 gauge is very sad because all their focus is in the TT gauge range where there is a great deal of competition at the moment.
What a beast! Quite odd seeing a duchess without the smoke deflectors!
Yeah, it is a powerhouse for sure! Maybe one day I'll get my own... 🤔😁
🤣 that's so relatable!
Typical for this loco at the moment it seems!
Great video, James! You gave me a great insight into TT gauge. The Layout in the magazine is from Hornby Magazine. Great work on this mate, can't wait for the next one.
Amazing man, thanks for your kind words. That is my main intent with the videos, to engage those who otherwise wouldn't think about it!
No sprung buffers? Straight to jail! Jokes mate, absolutely brilliant video, well done. Very thorough.
I know right! :D Pity really considering RRP these days. Nevermind! Thanks man, really appreciate it!
Sprung buffers aren’t necessary! I wish that everybody just stopped doing them because this „feature“ is useless and just something else that we have to waste money on!
@@BoxtankEngine honestly, I'm with you 😁 they are not required in OO at all. But a lot of people just happen to want them so manufacturers will put them there
Nice set a bit more track as standard would be appreciated from all companies. One thing I find strange is on the Bachmann McKinley explorer set in HO. You get 2 cars, and in N, you get 3. Hope to see more videos.
Agreed, interest does get low after a few runs around, my daughter has shown that already. I'm curious to check out some European and US sets to compare "starter" places in future. Thanks for your support!
@@thelittlewesternmodelrailway Have a look at Tomix and Kato from Japan . Both N scale.
I love the review dude! well done and the editing is top notch!
@EmperorsPath Thanks SBJ, means a lot coming from you! With some luck, more on the way!
Thank you for the shout out brother! Very kind of you!
No problem at all bro!
James, this was great review, I like these affordable and approachable sets, I do think the bigger manufacturers ought to focus on more diesel sets in this regard. Kids these days want to play with the stuff they see in the real world, steam is great, but diesels really are more appealing to that kind of audience. Great vid, good editing, looking forward to the next!
Thanks man! I agree, and other manufacturers could take a leaf out of Hornby's book on this (didn't think I would say that in a hurry!) Affordable sets are what started most of us when we were younger, even if we come back after 15 years. Pete Waterman said it best, kids these days want to see trains currently on the Mainlines today! :D Appreciate your words dude!
Cool!
Thanks :)
Thank you very much 👍 🥉
Glad you enjoyed it :) Thanks
Sorry to hear you have had the delay, but it gave you time to get on with the reference materials. Lovely books!
That's how I've been thinking about this time, a lot of research and prep work to go full steam ahead! (Pun intended!) Thanks for your comment :)
Oh I know all to well how Dec/Jan involved a lack of progress, all my todo jobs are still on the todo list! Still, slowly getting there, track building just takes such a long time.
Needs must I'm afraid! :D Bring on February!
(Me again) listened on phone and should be good now, please comment if that's not the case for you! - James LWR
Thanks me!
😍😍😍😍 love this
I'm glad :) Need to record a few more 😂
@@thelittlewesternmodelrailway agreed!
Motor choice was just to save room. And the label should have said “Directional running lights” 😂
I assumed that was the case with the lights :) I really liked the article!
Cheers. 🍻
Most welcome, thank you for checking me read through :)
This is such a great idea, I enjoyed watching this 😊 nice to delve into these magazines. I’m starved for anything like this over in South Africa, so it’s a welcome addition to my viewing content. Nicely done Hylt
Thank you for your support! This is exactly why I wanted to do this kind of video to allow others to see what they may not have access to or help choose whether they want to subscribe to something :) Thanks, James
"Thanks for clicking on this video".... heh! Maybe be a just a wee bit more casual tone some construcrtive criticism from your fellow model railway nooch over the Irish Sea. Thumbs.
Appreciate the feedback, felt weird when I said it but thought it was worth a try... Not for me I must admit 😂
@@thelittlewesternmodelrailway more channel subs than me ye must be doing something bright! 😁

Happy New Year bud! Good luck to you too! Thanks for catching the video.
Oh I really should start doing Insta for sharing my modelling progress, I ended up ordering a couple of panniers too, couldn't resist and it'll fit in with my gwr layout nicely. Cheers, Michael
Go for it, I'll follow you! Those panniers look so good don't they!
Olllo' merry Christmas and Happy new year
Same to you! Thanks for tuning in!
i love your scratch built track dude, I wish I had the patience! love watching the layout grow slowly!
Thanks dude! I really appreciate your feedback, been following you for a while and always give me the inspirational jolt I need to keep ticking!
Nice!
Thanks!
Nice job
Thank you :)
Is there any era appropriate rolling stock for the post 1990 livery 08 models? Most I have seen is appropriate for a BR green or black 08 that has not been made in TT120.
Honestly I am not too sure on TT120 ready to Run, there is a sizeable TT community so maybe there were kits produced beforehand. I believe Hornby have a small selection for BR TOPS Era7 (1971-1986) and maybe more in the works. Sorry I can't be of more help but thanks for checking out the read through! James
its always nice to hear someone else's thoughts on TT cheers dude!
No, thank you for watching man!
Cool walk-through. Very interested in this line for Hornby.
Thanks for watching! The Gronks are about the only thing in TT120 that interest me so this issue caught my attention!
This was fantastic to watch dude! very jealous!
High praise SBJ! Appreciate it! Hopefully having my mojo back will improve vid quality too! :D
Nice little update. Nice to see you have a train running and it doing what you want. Iv'e got to start building a curved single slip soon which is going to be about as fun as paying my taxes! lol. Cheers
Thank you :) Good luck with the Curved Single slip! I've got a few hard ones to so in the far future 😂
what is the difference between this booster and the dcc EX motorshield?
Hi, sorry for the late reply! This booster is an older setup, also from one of the members of the DCC-EX community. Essentially it's the same thing powered by a different wallwort feed and allows each section to be completely isolated. I am also looking into the new DCC-EX 5A motorshield, but initially this was going to allow me to fully section off the layout when I start adding to it. I will do a dedicated video to the motorshields and DCC-EX in the new year, once I have trains moving around! James - LWR
Sorry, but you need to speak up or get a lapel mic (they're not too expensive). I put on earphones, turned the volume to full, and still struggled to hear you!
Hey Paul, apologies for the late reply, been in over my head! I have a different mic setup moving forward so this should be remedied. But thank you for your feedback! James - LWR
Hi James. I've just seen your channel on the Monday Club and thought I'd come and have a look at you.
Many thanks! I've been away for a while but I am back now!
Hi, what ERA would you model ?
Era3 so roughly 1926-1940s Sorry for the uber late reply!
Cool leaf-through of the TT magazine and discussions on many things in the mag and outside!
Thanks bud! Don't want to risk showing/saying too much about the articles in-case a ban hammer comes down :D But a brief overview for those who don't have it seems like a good idea!
Great update. Some great plans and sounding like forward progress is happening. Quite a clever use of the parts for power if it is set up right, and you sound like you know exactly how to do it, so this should be cool!
Thanks Anthony! Still a lot of speculation going on I think 😂 I've done quite (and still have quite) a bit of research to carry out.... But the overall picture is coming together... Time to get building!
Hi James. I like the idea of a "literary corner". Just because I'm nosey: where in the EU do you live?
Hi Paul! I'm glad you find the idea likable, I enjoyed it too, the next one will be out soon :) and Slovakia is where I currently reside.
Hi James. I look forward to joining you on your journey. Rule 1 ALWAYS applies!
Hi Paul, thanks for tuning in! It will be a stretch but hopefully worth the effort! Rule 1 does always apply sure! But careful consideration towards how should look will always be my goal! (other than a King running up and down a single branch... that will happen) :D Cheers
Morning brilliant update looks to be an interesting build Can’t wait Take care Sion
Thanks Si! Appreciate the comment, plenty going on already this Feb :)
Hey :) How do you find the track planning software is to work with? Thomas
Hi Thomas, for me it took some getting used to, and I still know nothing! Once I've gotten to a good place with this layout, I will begin to explain in stages how I go about prepping for a layout build. The good thing is I have been able to use actual trackplans and data to get the turnouts roughly the right size and placement and then simply "fill in the blanks" as it were, but more on that later :) Cheers
