Stamping out Christmas Stocking Ornaments

I chose the stocking to have a larger area for the letters. They didn't turn out as legible as I was hoping. The subtitle track describes the build.

The starting piece of wood is a branch that had to be cut off of a cherry tree my Grandfather planted. Nice work, I like to build all my own custom boxes too. I see your old Grizzly brad nailer just like mine. I've had mine over 30 years and it's shot thousands of brads with no problems.

      Thanks Mark. Yes the grizzly brad nail guns are great, I seem to be a better shot with it than other brands.

A very nice project and very well implemented. The wood is beautiful. I think it's good that they showed what and how the wood was made. For many it would have been waste. They show what beautiful things you can conjure up from such wood and how to do it. The only thing I don't like is that the wood isn't treated on the inside.

      Thanks Holzmotte. The inside of the box is finished with shellac starting at about 10:52. It's a paler finish than the gel stain on the outside. I prefer to pre finish the insides of boxes with shellac as it doesn't keep oxidizing so there is less of a chemical smell inside the box. It helps with glue squeeze out as well.

    • @holzmotte
      @holzmotte 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@manythingslefttobuild Das leuchtet ein. Aber gibt es nicht eine Möglichkeit die Farbe anzupassen und trotzdem dann den Schellack aufzutragen? That makes sense. But isn't there a way to adjust the color and still apply the shellac?

    • @manythingslefttobuild
      @manythingslefttobuild 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are darker color tints of shellac available, I just like the light color option.

    • @holzmotte

      @@manythingslefttobuildDas wußte ich nicht, ich habe mit Schellack selber noch nicht gearbeitet. So hat jeder seinen eigenen Geschmack, was auch gut ist.😀 I didn't know that, I haven't worked with shellac myself. So everyone has their own taste, which is a good thing.😀

    Please let me know what you call that catch used in the bottom storage compartment. Question: Is there a reason why you chose to cut the lid off the box with a circular saw rather than a table saw? Not a criticism. Just wondering if you think that your approach has advantages. Question 2: Do you have plans available? I’ll have to tweak the sizes but at least it’s a starting point. Thank you!

    • @manythingslefttobuild
      @manythingslefttobuild ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael Luciano, The catch for the bottom storage compartment is from Lee Valley, they call it an 'Extruded double ball catch'. www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/hardware/catches/ball-catch/40618-extruded-double-ball-catches it's likely available from other stores as well. I chose to cut the lid off with a circular saw to use mostly Makita tools for the entire build, as a gimmick. A table saw is absolutely a better option, I use mine in my other builds where I cut lids off boxes. The only plan I have was shown at the start of the video. I should really start using darker artists pencils, so it shows up better. I often make misstates on the plans as well, shown in assorted videos. Thanks for watching, good luck with your build.

    Nice design! I’ve seen others that didn’t make use of space under the saw and with no battery or blade storage. I just got a Dewalt dcs577b saw so I’ll have to tweak the measurements to adapt but I like your design. Thank you for sharing

    I really enjoyed the pairing of the creation of your tool box with the really nice classical music. It was also a bonus to have the names of the pieces of music so that I may listen to them later. About the box, I own the same saw and I am wondering if you would be willing to share the dimensions of your box? Thank you.

    • @manythingslefttobuild
      @manythingslefttobuild 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Philip McAdam. I do the music after editing the video and try to find something that fits, some times it's classical. If you watch on a tv or computer monitor and pause at about 0:10 the dimensions are visible on the cut list. Good luck on your build.
