Experiencing PTSD flashbacks is a lot like this. It’s visceral, overwhelming, ethereal, and scary. The video opens with images that should be peaceful - rest. I see a female character. The video loops twice, suggesting her experience through time is convoluted with her memories. Another timeline plays with a woman and a man - perhaps her in another time, or others who discover pieces of the puzzle: our sleeping woman, and a man who removes a belt. Maybe is suggests not only a memory, but perhaps a scene that would have always played out. With the black and white flashing, it becomes disorienting for me as a viewer, and makes me feel uncomfortable - like I don’t like what I’m seeing, like I’m remembering a bad memory. Because the song’s lyrics are clearly dismissive and undermining, but also lovelorn and deep, it can communicate a few things: Either someone is being lied to and manipulated, someone is lying to themselves about their feelings, or someone is haunted by an undeniable truth. But the reality leads to a woman incapable of rest: Our sleeping woman, a man’s face - superimposed onto her screaming face. The guitar riff leading to the climax is also worth noting. With a symbol out of the ordinary flashing repeatedly, white and black competing, it communicates to me the apex of breaking into consciousness. At a certain point, the truth becomes conscious and undeniable - leading to our brutal ending. A flash of a naked body. And what appears to be mass carnage. Or pleasure. Multiple people, two - the time, the players blur. What is implied - to me anyway - is that the past is inescapable where its memories infiltrate our present awareness. There is no differentiation between what was and what is felt, creating both dreams and waking reality intertwined with agony. And as the song suggests: Agony can be beautiful and haunting. With the black and white flashing imagery overlayed onto some present like ghosts, in a way you can interpret this music video as a haunting, and a ghost hunt where dreams and memory seek to resolve a mystery, or a present when our mind and body works to sort the pieces, all the while creating painful distortions of reality and disrupting rest. When the past becomes the present, when we work to reconcile what haunts us, we are overwhelmed with agony but also eventually left with what is true.

I love the post-Syd pre-Dark Side version of Pink Floyd, and this song is very much in that vein. I also like the contrarian take on mocking the conventions of love song lyrics.
