When someone had a military name and had children, did the children ever have a patronymic name for the father, and have the military last name, or would they have just gone by the military name?

I was told by my father and my aunt that we were descended from a group of Low Country ironworkers who were invited to Sweden by the king to make cannon for him, and that all of these people took the surname Malmberg meaning iron mountain or iron hill. Sadly both have since passed on so there is nobody left of that line to ask. They also told me that our family came over from Sweden around or before the time of the American Civil War so the name predates the Swedish government's naming reforms. A few years back I wrote a letter to the Vasa Star, which is the Vasa Order of America's monthly magazine trying to find out more but got no reply. Has anyone else heard this story?

Very interesting about naming conventions. I had known there was something done for soldiers but never understood what that was before.
