Doing my best to get fast (and eventually race) on my fixed gear bikes!
Flyin' Through Suburbia | Dolan Pre Cursa | FIXED GEAR
Join me on a fixed gear bike ride through my hometown of Santa Clarita, CA where it's VERY hilly and VERY windy. I had an epic route of climbing planned but I unfortunately cut my ride short due to realizing that I left my car keys on the trunk of my car (dumbass)... I got a little discouraged to continue the ride, but I went up another massive hill to punish myself and descended back to my car afterwards :)

What bag you have under your seat ?
It's a vintage cannondale saddle bag that I picked up at a thrift store for $5USD! :D
@@RandyRules oh ok cool! Love this setup!!!
@@RandyRules love this setup !
Dream bike. Really? All black. You're kidding, right? Sheeze. You need some color in your mind. This thing is ugly and extreamly boring.

Racing back to the keys
Best motivation to try and set some PRs 😅
Very nice fixie bro!!
I appreciate you! its a blast to ride also!
Need a re-edit with cat check section!
lol like and subscribe to my cat channel for more! jk
Omg. glad you remembered you forgot your keys, that could of been hell. Really nice ride and descending, still climbing pretty well on that gear ratio! Looks like a beautiful place to ride!
Bricks were shat at that realization 😅 Thanks! I’m considering going back to a 17t rear cog cause climbing hurts buuuuut descending feels great and I’m not bouncing around as much (the camera also appreciates that lol) We’ll see! Might have to crank up the resistance on those indoor rides lol
do you skid often with speedplay? if so how is it?
Yes! I used to frequently skid from 2018 to this summer (now mostly using a front brake) and not once have I ever accidentally unclipped. For reference I use both speedplay comp and speedplay zero pedals paired with speedplay standard tension cleats. ✌️⚙️
Nothing like a new bit of shwag to get motivated again. P.S Love the booze caddy thing you got going on.
It's very motivating! Now if this rain would just go away so I can enjoy this bike more... PS: LOL, thanks! I got it at Ikea and it was labeled as a bathroom storage cart.. but bar cart seemed like a better idea :p
Heya Randy. Nice to see you back in spite of your boardwalk trauma and additional carriage😄
To go fast we have to stop fast, now you convince me to put a brake on my fixie
I've ridden brakeless for years and years and wasn't until this summer when I put on a brake.. those long downhills are more confidence inspiring and my ride stats are slightly faster (if you care about avg speed on those hard effort rides)
I rode for years with a front brake and never used it so I recently took it off, but they are a nice to have
Finally a relatable bike content
Looks so much fun! Belated Happy Birthday
Thank you!! ☺️☺️
Happy belated birthday Gnarly ride - you're flying out there! I laughed when you said you gained 16 pounds after your crash because we have the weight gain in common - you still look great though. Keep at it !
Thanks dude! Every upload I see from you in the mornings I’ve been going straight to the trainer to ride along lol
Are you going to post the whole ride?
I recorded it vertically for instagram reels/TH-cam shorts. I'm editing a very similar full length format ride that will be up soon :)
may i know your handlebar width sir?
38cm :)
What are the bottle cage strap called or link?
I use these on a couple of my bikes. They work really well, just make sure the straps are super tight! www.amazon.com/dp/B0144NTZOU?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder_k0_1_9&=&crid=1XAURBFVBGZ1V&=&sprefix=sks+bottl
Fixed vs single speed? I love simplicity but fixed gear is just too unpractical for me.
Cool vid! This is exactly the kind of ride I need more of in my life! Only I’m 5+kph slower. Cool bike too
What size is your frame?
52cm
9:02 stretched chain that does not fit the links well on the chainring?
I agree... well sort of. I have a steel beater (Retrospec) I bought during the pandemic and it rode just fine, for a long while; but eventually upgrading most of the components (everything but wheels), left me with a bike that I enjoy as much as my Skream. The one upgrade that shocked me as far as the increase in ride quality was going from quil stem to threadless.
Thanks for the comment! Honestly haven't ridden a road/fixed gear bike that didn't have a threadless headset so I can see that one being huge!
They’re dangerous bikes, it can definitely snap on you and that’s your life, especially if you ride city.
Yeah I can see the area of concern there. Thanks for the comment! For what it's worth, I did crash big time on this bike a couple times and it's still holding up. HiTen steel isn't the greatest quality (vs chromoly) but it isn't exactly weak, just heavy. If I was cruising around on a Throne Tracklord (cracklord?) it'd be a different story
@@RandyRules that’s good, I’d just say it’s more worth your life to save the money and build up a Dolan precursa or something like a prebuilt from state bicycle co. No cheap bike is worth your life and I’ve seen lock rings slip and heard about chainrings folding on those in the worst circumstances
@Ciuwas I built a Dolan pre Cursa! It’s on my channel lol. I haven’t ridden it yet because i broke my collar bone. But I tell you what… I am PUMPED to get back out there haha
@@RandyRules aw man! That sucks, my friend just broke his hand a handful of weeks ago riding fixed and he’s finally back out there. I hope you recover well man! I currently ride a mash parallax lol

Why does the decal look different
I’ve seen an older version of this frame with a completely different Dolan logo on the down tube paired with a smaller Pre Cursa logo on the seat tube. The frame i have is a 2021-2023. The new 2024 frame looks identical to this with the exception of a tapered head tube and new colors.
Can you link your saddle? Thru amazon
I got you. www.amazon.com/EVOSID-Printed-Breathable-Waterproof-Cushion/dp/B0C5QZZD4W?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 They also have a non carbon version for $79. The one I have is SO light though.
Im from the us its looking like it would cost about 1500 usd including shipping A wabi lightning would cost about the same Should i get these or the wabi?
This is tough. I've seen some REALLY nice wabi lightings. I'm pretty sure the pre cursa has a slightly more aggressive geo and shorter wheelbase so handling will be feel more twitchy and fun, but the lighting should be a touch more comfortable and predictable. You can't go wrong with either. For everyday cycling I would opt for the lightning. Good luck!
I own a Pre Cursa in the regular setup (all Alpina) now for 3yrs. I had the chance to ride a Wabi, because of an other TH-camr promoting it intensively 😉 What I can say is that the Pre Cursa is a bullet, it kind of transfers all moves you’re doing on that bike into acceleration. It’s just so good and I don’t want anything else. I tried also many other brands and at the end I’d say the Pre Cursa is a blast, if you’re performance driven. I went also for pretty long rides like 190km and I felt always comfortable, no complaints regarding stiffness whatsoever. The Wabi didn’t convince me at all, it felt almost boring compared to the aluminum Pre Cursa frame. Just my humble opinion.
@@warkingmarsi went with a wabi lightning its been good so far def a lot better than my aluminum unkwn frame but that doesnt compare to a cursa. For sure in the future would build a cursa
You're gunna have a blast on that bike! Nice to see you in good spirits Randy, glad you did something productive toward what you love while you couldn't do what you loved. Inspiring!
Thank you Rusty! I absolutely can't wait to rip on this thing!
Cool bike! Congrats! Wow, the stem is long :) I weight my bike with a luggage scale, I've had them for a while, and they work, so no point to buy a bike scales ><
Thank you so much! Can’t wait to get on this thing! Yeah I sized down on the frame for a slight weight decrease, but added a longer stem so that I can fit. I have a 120mm stem laying around just in case if it’s too long lol
@@RandyRules I'm sure it will be crazy fun to ride !)
I feel like FG/SS is the backlash bike industry badly needs. To take things less serious and to return to the belief that that is the rider not the machine that matters the most and that any tech advancement is a tool and tools are meant to be used wisely.
Awesome
Cool vid , here is a sub, i think who cares as long as we have fun ......Rock on Randy Rules

Yo I’m leaving Texas and I’m about to be new to the your city in week or so. What rides do I look for? I’m fixed gear no brakes rider down south
@@raybenavides4906 Awesome! Hopefully you’ll be out here to enjoy the sunshine before it gets rainy for like 8 months straight! If you have IG check out cyclehomies and cyclecats. Cyclecats hosted a pretty epic 80mile 5,000ft + elevation fixed gear ride recently www.shift2bikes.org/calendar/ That’s a Portland ride calendar that gets updated with new rides pretty often. There’s a lot going on in there. There’s also a fixed gear group ride that meet up on tuesdays on the east side, I’m not sure if they continue that in the fall - I’ll get back to you if I find out more info. I’ve always wanted to join that. Vancouver, WA is pretty close and they also have weekly fixed gear rides too. If you like climbing there’s always roadies and fixed gear riders that train in the west hills, forest park, and Washington park. Scenery is foresty, not too much cars, and lots of gravel sections if you feel like getting off the road for a bit. Springwater corridor is a bike path that takes you from Portland to Boring. Its an out and back bike path that totals to roughly 42 miles and 800ft of elevation. I do that a few times a year. Always a ton of cyclist on that path. Banks to Vernonia is also a super popular out and back bike path. Also around 40miles but with < 2,000ft elevation gain. Doable on a brakeless set up. It’s a beautiful ride. Not exactly close to Portland but I strongly recommend checking it out on a nice day. I’ll update this if anything else comes to mind! ⚙️💨

What camera do you use?
insta360 ace pro paired with a lark m2 mic
@@RandyRules thanks mate. I am looking at it to film my bike rides too. Great footage.
What gear ratio?
This ride I used 46/17
@@RandyRules thats about 140 cadence?
I ride 48 17
@@thomashammack7743 nice I use that gear ratio on my other bike. Its my favorite so far and I feel like I can get up and down any long hill without too much trouble
I think it's not the matter of what's faster but what's safer while still being fast that is important. I noticed that fixie riders always run red lights and try to squeeze their way through moving traffic. I've never seen a road cyclist or casual cyclist do that. It's always them. What's even more funny is how despite all of that, once the lights turn green, I would blow past all 20 of them on my road bike. I guess it's just an instinct to them not wanting to stop riding that thing.
Dang…The ol damp wood caper,eh? Rusty alerted me to here. I don’t watch nor make shorts.just goes to show I should. Sorry, buddy. Anyway, pecker up and speedy recovery to you sir!
I thought it was wood but it ended up being that fake slippery laminate stuff. I went very slow at first but the bridge seemed to go on forever and I wanted to get off of it quickly so I went a little faster. Poor choice haha. I just got home from surgery so now I'll be looking out the window as we are in the tail end of summer 😂 Thanks for the recovery wishes!!
My langster 50/14 my madison 50/17.
That was cool
@@mir2.00 it was definitely an enjoyable ride up until the end haha
Damn it =( Speedy recovery to you Randy. Looked like the wheel slipped on the wood? Sorry man, wish that didn't happen to you.
Thank you!! Yeah, my front tire lost traction and slipped into the railing and that bounced me back to the opposite side of the railing. Not sure if it was the impact on the ground or railing that caused the break. Also I thought I was riding on wood but it was definitely plastic-like, very slippery!
Hope there were no injuries
