Mt Rushmore YT Slide Show
Mount Rushmore National Memorial, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is an iconic American landmark featuring the 60-foot-tall faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Carved into granite by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his team between 1927 and 1941, the monument symbolizes the nation's birth, growth, development, and preservation. Each president was chosen to represent key aspects of American history: Washington for the country's founding, Jefferson for expansion, Roosevelt for progress, and Lincoln for unity. The site attracts over two million visitors annually, offering scenic views, educational exhibits, and the Avenue of Flags, which represents all 50 states. Despite its grandeur, Mount Rushmore remains a subject of controversy due to its location on land sacred to the Lakota Sioux. Nevertheless, it stands as a testament to American ambition and artistry, blending natural beauty with human craftsmanship.

It's a 12 ft. Hornbeck Classic. Weighs 18 lbs. Really great. Can hold quite a bit a gear (although I tend to take less with it than I do with my 15.5 ft. (32 lb.) Sawyer Autumn Mist. Easy to carry either overhead or on the shoulder. It has really extended my paddling life and made certain trips possible now that I'm older.

I couldn't agree more. I had a chance to paddle the southern end of it on the way out. My plan was to camp for a few nights at the primitive campsite on the south shore shown on the Paddler's Map, but could never find it. I did spend some time at the beach on the southern end - really nice! Too bad they don't have a campsite near that. I plan to go back to the lake sometime to try to find that campsite again and hopefully camp there.
