314 | The Power of Customer-Centric OKRs with Josh Seiden & Jeff Gothelf
Summary
Josh Seiden & Jeff Gothelf join Dominic Monkhouse to talk about one of his favourite growth tools - OKRs (Objectives and Key Results)
The discussion dives deep into the world of OKRs, highlighting their critical role in goal-setting and driving organisational alignment. The guests introduce their latest book, Who Does What By How Much?, which offers a fresh, customer-focused take on OKRs. They stress the importance of shifting from output-driven goals to outcome-based objectives that are tightly aligned with customer needs and behaviours.
A key theme of the conversation is the delicate balance between Business as Usual (BAU) activities and the implementation of OKRs. This episode explores how OKRs should not only complement existing operations but also help steer an organisation’s strategy. They discuss the ideal timeframe for setting corporate OKRs, with an emphasis on quarterly check-ins and measurable key results that track progress throughout the year.
The conversation also addresses practical challenges, such as fostering collaboration across teams and securing leadership buy-in, both of which are essential for successful OKR implementation. The speakers advise organisations to start small, gradually expand OKR adoption, and invest time and effort into their OKR process while still keeping an eye on BAU performance.
In addition to their insights on OKRs, the guests share personal book recommendations and reflect on their own definitions of success, rounding out a rich discussion that not only offers practical advice but also broader perspectives on achieving meaningful outcomes in today's customer-driven world.
Takeaways
OKRs should be customer-centric and focused on outcomes rather than outputs.
Aligning goals with the needs and behaviours of customers leads to better products and services.
Strategic goals should be set for a year, while tactical goals can be set on a quarterly or monthly basis.
The conversation and alignment around OKRs should be a two-way process, involving input from all levels of the organisation.
Flexibility and customisation are key in implementing OKRs, as each organisation's needs and context may vary. Set quarterly check-ins and key results that can be measured throughout the year.
Prioritise customer-centric goals and focus on changing customer behaviour.
Start small and gradually expand OKR implementation.
Allocate time and effort to OKRs while maintaining business as usual metrics.
Facilitate collaboration and foster leadership buy-in for successful OKR implementation.
Continuously learn and acquire new skills to enhance personal and professional growth.

Thank you Alex for helping so many people around the world. I saw your documentary years ago. I did not think that I could survive and thrive as you clearly have. That film and the talks that you give, thank you for putting this one on TH-cam, inspire others, including me. It is so easy to feel sorry for oneself when life gets tough. But then I think of you and I know that I can do it and that the challenges of life may make us into better people, even if we don't see it at the time. I wish you continued success! I wish Lucy and Same and continued health and happiness. Bless them both. We need to problem solve for people with amputations here in the U.S. as well. One never knows when it will be you. This is a wealthy country, but most of us are not wealthy. I am taking your recommendation and will read Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Love, Belinda :)

I just watched the doc as well, you look so great sir! Your story is incredibly inspiring. My favorite thing you said was that the ‘last two years were the most tragic and beautiful’ I probably misquoted but, it just goes to show that no matter what, if you take what life gives you and find a way to create something beautiful you can…also your wonderful Lucy is a queen!!

Last night I watched your docutmentary and was so happy that you ended well with Lucy and your darling little boy. I was worried about your lips, knowing that there is a girl here in the states that had her lips bitten off by a pitbull. She too had a very thick skin graft and it took her plastic surgeon a long time to shape it to be her mouth. Today she is almost there and getting her lip tattooed to match her bottom lip. I am thrilled to see that you have this video that shows not only how incredible your journey has taken you to such heights but has brought you to a face that is the handsome man you once were. You look amazing and what you and your team have done not only for yourself and your family but what you have done for no telling how many other people with disabilities is beyond incredible. You are an amazing man and yes I think the Strep has saved your life and your family from going down a long road into alcoholism that you might never have recovered from. Life has a way of getting us out of our own way to make things better. I am so happy for you and your family. Carry on the amazing work you started. You are an inspiration.

Justin Roff-Marsh is a breath of fresh air. I have been preaching most of Justin's ideas for a of couple decades. The B2B sales world continues to get worse because many in top sales management would change but are now being forced to. The traditional sales model is and has been broken for decades! We don’t need another update to our current sales model, sales 2.0, 3.0, etc. but we need a whole new model that truly helps companies and their sales teams succeed. Most current and past failures of most salespeople are ‘not’ their fault but the dysfunctional, many times unethical, an outdated broken model that forces the wrong behavior and rewards which are ‘polar’ opposite of what’s in the best interest of the buyer/consumer. Thus, why most people, even in sales, don’t want to be called a salesperson. The average tenure of a B2B salesperson has continued to drop to 18 to 14 months depending on which study you looked at in 2019. Also, many of the same studies show that roughly half aren’t making their sales goals either. The traditional model for B2B sales is and has been broken for years. We need a new model. (MSA²(™) Great interview Dominic Monkhouse! Tks
