48:30: "Faulkner doesn't do a lot of first-person narration of African-Americans"- There is literally a 100 page section in "Go Down, Moses" (The Fire and the Hearth) where Lucas Beauchamp's complicated family history is largely told from his perspective, including through first person narration. Even if Prof. Hannon is (surprisingly) somehow unaware of Lucas' appearance in several Faulkner novels, to dismiss his central representation in "Intruder in the Dust" as a minstrel character is about as insightful as saying "this is a movie/novel about racism, therefore it must be racist".

No offense…but this is a terrible theory, for a few reasons. First…it feels like you’re desperate to fit a square peg into a round hole with this. As if you’re selfishly hoping to validate your theory in order for self gratification. Secondly, if you’re correct…you could be correct, with this still being a superhero movie. One doesn’t cancel out the other. And most importantly…your theory takes the fun and intrigue out of the movie for most of us. Most of us love the idea of this being an understated superhero origin story. Your theory seeks to destroy the idea we love. That doesn’t invalidate your theory…but it does mean those that feel as I do won’t support your theory. And since it’s a theory and you have no way to definitively prove it…support for your theory is all you can hope to gain.

Don't know you guys, just found this by chance. You got this movie all wrong, all of your points are misguided. Wish I could meet you and explain. This movie is the best comedy of the second half of 20th century, on every level from performance to technique. I could even show you how Coppola adopted some of Jerry's directing choices for Godfathers Iand II.

We can infer that: 1. Never blindly trust a so called "friend", furthermore when he puts his lifelong dream ahead of short term possibilities such as getting an temporary money earning job, which would help you with basic things such as...SHARING THE RENT BILL; 2. Using someone else's identity is a scam, a fraud, a CRIME, which can get the scammer and the supposed victim in legal trouble, aside from the professional reputation of the one who got its id scammed - you work hard to be a teacher, study, looks for a good job to get stable and your wannabe rockstar friend gets your identity; 3. When you hire someone, CHECK ITS BACKGROUNDS - documents, banking account (Dewey asked the director of the school if he can get the payment in cash when anyone would prefer to get it directly in its account for more convenience - which by itself would be enough to be a little careful about the one you're hiring), furthermore when you are going to put the individual in contact with CHILDREN! Not to mention the fact you are in charge of a school with a high reputation and that charges highly its students' family, not to mention the principal herself wasn't a trust material when everyone knows that (not "Ulterior motives" haha) she's an alcohol addict; 4. You know the "boring square girlfriend"? Also known as the only reasonable character in this whole fucking movie? Like...that person you always think it wants to "rock your boat"? Sometimes this person is doing this for your sake, remember points 1 and 2? In real life, would you trust to leave your children in a school that has an alcoholic principal, a scammer hired as a teacher with no background checks and on the top of that, takes them around in places where they are exposed to alcohol (remember the van scene?), so, fiction can be a funny dystopia with happy endings and Deus ex machinas where everyone ends happily well succeeded getting rich with a "school of rock", but in real life, upon realizing the scam in the parents teacher meeting, everyone would end with huge legal problems, the school's reputation to the drain and the reasonable girlfriend saying "I've told you so!"

I have to say, I never understood how the role of "Margo" took that much skill to portray. Any person can play that role. Where was the challenge of it? Davis is simply given credit for a well-written character, who has great one-liners. However, that credit should go to Joseph L. Mankiewicz, not Davis.

Why do people constantly compare Joan and Bette? They are completely different actresses. "Bette could do Possessed but Joan couldn't do Eve." There are tons of Joan roles Bette couldn't touch like "A Womans Face", "Mildred Pierce", "Humoresque", "Damned Don't Cry", "Harriet Craig", "Sudden Fear", "Johnny Guitar"....

In regards to this 'Patriarchal=Bad' concept though, I hate to say it, but you have fallen for Feminist Lies and it's given you the wrong takeaway. The Increase in Self-Deletion and other issues with Men has come about because our culture, having become dangerously corrupted by Feminist Doctrine, NO LONGER RESPECTS real Masculinity. Feminizing Men does not result in a more mature society, it results in a BROKEN one.

I'm not putting down all the work you put into this video, but it's actually very simple- Contrary to what we are told, Humans don't live time in seconds, minutes and hours. We DON'T live by the Clock or the Calendar. We live our lives in MOMENTS. 'Slow Cinema' (I dislike the term but we'll use it for now), is an attempt to extend that moment to focus on a point the movie wants to make.

I was hoping to contact Jeffrey about the music in Night of the Hunter, but since this podcast was actually done in 2017, you probably don't have a current email for him? Btw, there is a brief convoluted parody of the tattood knuckles in a Seinfeld episode which parodies the "Cape Fear" remake (original starred Mitchum in a similar crazed role), using his Uncle Leo. And unrelated, but perhaps inspired, was an episode of "Bus Stop"(1961) called "A lion walks among us" about a charismatic traveling singer/serial killer.

1:02:00 Even if most pro gun people in the US are idiots (I'm from Europe myself) the right to keep and bear arms is in fact ANTI-fascist. The Germans banned guns for Jews in 1935, 6 years before the Holocaust really began. The Soviet Union started to ban guns for ordinary people as early as 1918, and Stalin murdered 20 million people, who mostly owned no guns which with they could have defended themselves. In China Mao murdered 60-100 mio. unarmed people. The Russians and Hamas have raped, tortured and murdered thousands of unarmed civilians *just recently.* That is what you should compare the school shootings with.

I have not yet reviewed the other parts of your series - but this was factual and respectful. Thank you for honoring Joan's memory - she is so often the subject of unscrupulous reporting. Its true that Ms. Davis delivered a transformational performance in "Now Voyager". Actually, I loved her in "Elizabeth & Essex" - quite impressive. However, I would draw your attention to Joan's performance in "A Woman's Face" - a film in which she completely transforms and delivers an astounding dramatic performance. Joan transforms profoundly in several roles - The Gorgeous Hussey, Straight Jacket, and Strange Cargo come to mind. I would suggest that Ms. Davis often relies on her star power - and Joan is the more intuitive and natural actress. The "Feud" between Ms. Davis and Joan is largely overblown, played up for the press and the fans. Of course there is a grain of truth to it - they were rivals in their work. But most of the hype comes from that notorious book "The Divine Feud" - a trash heap of unverifiable gossip. That Veda! What a role! Truly unlikeable - and so well played by the lovely Ann Blyth. Mildred Pierce is a real triumph all around, I never get tired of viewing it. Butterfly McQueen is a treasure - its a shame she didn't get better roles. That is her real voice and her real name, you should look up interviews with her on TH-cam, she is a delightful woman. Possessed (1931) was the third film starring Joan Crawford and Clark Gable. Its an excellent melodrama, and beautifully made. To me, the most impressive shot is the "train scene" at the beginning of the film - a real masterpiece of storytelling. It took my breath away the first time I saw it. Joan is wonderful in this film, so much moxie! It is one of my top favorite Joan films - and I always encourage others to seek it out - sadly it is not widely available to stream. Possessed (1947) is a very different animal. Another great film, but It doesn't need me to promote it, as it is widely available and Joan received an Oscar nomination for her performance. #joancrawford #joancrawfordforever #friendsofjoancrawford
