VW Classic Bug Ignition System Problem
มุมมอง 46K3 ปีที่แล้ว
No spark! I also attempt to bypass the distributor for a spark test with two different coils. In the video, I mention a part I wasn't familiar with, I have since learned it is the idle cutoff solenoid. follow-up bench test: th-cam.com/video/x6pGxPaZrGk/w-d-xo.html

Josh can you film your mixing sessions on the Wing, thanks.
Dang, I've got a bit of a different issue. I was given a kit car with a VW engine in it. It was meticulously maintained by the old man that owned it before his passing. His granddaughter and her boyfriend tried getting it running, so I have no idea if they changed anything up. As far as I know, all the wiring is still correct, but I have no spark. I have confirmed continuity to the coil, have done the spark test on the original blue bosch coil, as well as a replacement aftermarket(both produced spark). I have also tried each coil in the car with the original condenser, as well as a replacement. Beither coil will fire. The rotor is on, making contact, plug wires have continuity, etc. No idea what is left that could be the culprit. I have asked around on several videos, nobody has had a response yet. Any ideas or troubleshooting tests are appreciated
Did u ever figure out what was going on
I did! After a lot of frustrating troubleshooting... I finally checked the ignition switch. It was bad (was passing power to the starter, but not the coil). Confirmed by hotwiring, and when I replaced the switch, all is well!
@@JoshRogers how did you hot wire? Sorry I’m have the same problem, I have no spark
@JoshRogers first, thanks for posting such a video to ask for comments on t/s this issue. I’m curious if you think you would have determined the issue was with the ignition switch initially if you had checked for 12V coming into the coil? I thought you said you had. If so, is there a way to confirm an ignition switch issue w/o having to change out the switch? I’m having the same issue with no spark at the plug but I believe it’s an issue with the CB Perf Magnaspark distributor since I have 12V coming into the coil and the primary and secondary resistance checkout correctly.
You are right, I did check input voltage, and it was present. If I recall, though, it was low though. The ignition switch had continuity, but must have been making a poor contact. Good enough to detect voltage with my meter, but not good enough to handle a substantial draw. In retrospect, I should have tried a voltage drop test with the coil connected. I have a healthy fear of getting zapped by that coil though, and was nervous about trying that.
I share in that fear 🤣 I’m replacing my distributor with another Magnaspark this week. I may have to face my fear and do the voltage drop test of the coil if that doesn’t do the trick.
Did you ever figure out your electrical problem ?

I thought you had 12 votes to the positive side of the coil when you was trouble shooting it and there was no spark @@JoshRogers
Yes I’m theory that would mean u have 2 dead coils
turned out it was a bad ignition switch.
@@JoshRogers oh really mine has been sitting for about a year and a half to 2 years and the fuel line was clogged cleaned that and it would idle ok but once it got hot it ran like shit (misfire/not enough fuel ) and now it just cranks if I spray brake clean in the carb it doesn’t even try to fire on it so I’m thinking I have a bad coil but it’s raining here so can’t test it kinda at a loss until I saw your video
It was running good before I parked it but I got caught up with work and another vehicle the bug was on the back burner
@@blakecampos5563 hey man think I got the same problem what did you end up doing to get it runnin?
@@tylergreene6650 do u have electric points or mechanical make sure they are clean if mechanical if not u might have a bad coil
Did you find a solution for this issue I’m having the same issue on vw bus

@@JoshRogers thank you I will try to hot wire it and see what happens
Bus is alive again, hot wired it and it fire on first try will be getting new switch today, thanks again for the info
@@lostigresdelnorte , excellent! Good job!
@@JoshRogers Josh how did you hot wire it? Thanks in advance.
