For your question, Suryavarman I was the son of King of Tambralinga. Tambralinga was an Indianised kingdom located on Malay Penninsula (in modern-day Southern of Thailand, Nakorn Si Thammarat). It was under the influence of Srivijaya. Suryavarman I usurped King Udayadityavarman I and claimed the throne to be the King of Khmer empire. Suryavarman I established diplomatic relation with Chola dynasty of South India (Tamilnadu). He spent much time to start construction e.g. Prasat Preah Vihear. You can see the similar style of the construction between of South India and his construction in Khmer empire.
