Gospel Conversations 2025 Feb 16 Holy Innocents Matt 2:13-18
Sometimes it can be challenging to stick to our commitment to finding a challenge, good news and "so what?" in every Gospel passage. There are plenty of challenges in the story of the massacre of hundreds of innocent children. Where could we possibly find good news, or inspiration to live by? Lisa Emerson, Eddie O'Connor and Craig Smith rise to the challenge as they talk it through with Michael this week.
Matt 2:13-18
Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’
When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:
‘A voice was heard in Ramah,
wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.’

As the year settles in, students return to school and university, and summer holidays recede, it's interesting timing to be reminded of Jesus calling his first disciples. Time to start afresh? What was it like for these fishermen to be witness to God Incarnate, filling their empty nets with fish, and then calling them to leave everything and follow? What would it be like for us to do the same? ...

2025! Those of you who've been watching our holiday-version of the Conversations may feel you've stayed in our company all through Dec and Jan, but for those of us who do the recordings it feels like we've had a real break. And we come back with a beautiful story: the story of Mary and Joseph and Jesus coming to the temple and being greeted by Simeon and Anna with prophetic outcries and rejoici...

We normally take a break over January, but someone pointed out to us that often that's precisely the time fill-in preachers could do with some ideas. However, since most of us need a break from weekly recordings (and Anne needs a break from editing) we're offering something different this January. Five of us got together for an afternoon. Each of us had prepared something on one of the readings...

As is now a Gospel Conversation tradition, we've opened up today's Conversation to any of our Conversationalists who were available at the recording time to join in. We asked them all, "What continues to surprise you with joy in the Gospel reading?" The result is a bundle of celebration and unfamiliar ways of thinking about this extremely familiar story. All of us who have taken part this year ...

Advent 4! So close to what we've been waiting for, and today we join in imagination with two women who are also waiting expectantly, actively, and faithfully. This is a rare story in the Bible in that it would fulfil the Bechdel test (google it!) - and is aptly discussed by a panel of three women: Lisa Emerson, Peg Riley, and Anne van Gend, with Michael as usual holding it all together! Join us...

Wow ... people mentioned! A nice touch.
I like your new format! You always have so much that is helpful to the text.
@@richajer3137 we'll be back to "normal" in Feb, but will continue to do this format over holiday periods 😀
So interesting...thankyou!
You're so right, so often "we" merge the Gospels. This is one of the most interesting places where we do that because it wouldn't make for a great children's nativity play if all we had was Matthew and the slaughter of the Innocents. I don't think families visiting my parish on Christmas Eve would come back if Matthew was all we did. 🤣 Yet we sanitise the reality of the 21st Century and suffering children. 😥
Do you think there's a place for both? That maybe it's good to have a day focused on unalloyed joy - but not to settle in there and block out reality? Even Mary and Joseph had their night of joy and wonder - maybe even days or weeks of it - before they had to flee. Just a thought!
@@annevangend742 Oh absolutely. I think we need to celebrate the wonder. And thank goodness for Luke, who allows us to enter that joy so fully. It was just something that Gillian said that really challenged me, in the current day of war in the Middle East.
Thank you all for still doing Conversation Minis.
Thankyou so much...and may the blessing of God be with you all also.
Today, this was just the lift, the tonic I needed! Thank you - maybe I am ready to face 'Christmas' after all
Have a wonderful one, Sal! Blessings on you, the ever-increasing family and the folk at St Mark's xx
Thankyou so much!
Thank you! A blessed Christmas to you too.
Christmas Blessings and thankyou for providing these conversations!😊
Thank you, Lisa, for defending the truth, and for returning the session to Christ's kingship.
The truth does belong to one person: Jesus.
Fantastic thankyou all
Fantastic thankyou all
what a great conversation. Thanks team!
Jesus died so that we may live: Everything Jesus ever did was for the glory of the Father and for us. Jesus said it was a very big honor to die for our sins. Jesus died so that we can receive God’s Holy Spirit, which is the only way we can receive God’s truth through Jesus. Jesus died so that by God’s Holy Spirit we can be saved. Jesus died so we would remember God the Father and have a personal relationship with Him. Jesus died so that we can return back to the Father once we become lost to sin. Jesus knows how much the Father loves us that he sacrificed himself for our sake. Jesus of his own free will gave his life for us; no man took his life, but Jesus gave his life to save ours (John 10:18). God and Jesus did this so that we can know the only true God, the Father, and Jesus Christ. They did this so that we may become a family again (John 17:3), for they are one in spirit and in truth (John 10:30, John 17:21-23).
Great conversation
It's easier to believe that Jesus is present in the elements than to believe that the wafer is really bread. :)
Always a blessing. Thank you!
Thankyou so much for the song recommendation...love it!
Greetings from South Carolina, USA to my Anglican siblings Down Under! I am a priest serving a small congregation here. Thank you for sharing your insights.
And greetings from the bottom of the world! Lovely to know our conversations are sparking thoughts across the world 😊
Maybe you could be part of the conversation one week?
@@annevangend742 Thank you for that! I'd enjoy participating sometime!
Thankyou so much!
Thank you all for such beneficial and thoughtful reflection.
What about how when we surrender to God in love for Him, we will obey his commandments. Often obeying his commandments is scary and often takes more faith in God and love for God and surrender to Love than not obeying his commandments. And when we think about the way God's commandments come to us, they're always in part if not completely a sense within ourselves of what would be good or what would be loving, or what would be just or right to do for the sake of all things and reality... The question of obedience is one of trust and the question to our own hearts "will you love?" I'm reminded of how Peter says those who live in love live in God, and God in them, because God is love.
Ditto….such helpful commentary. Thank you!
Thank you, great work again.
Thanks everyone! Great points and interesting reflection.
Thankyou so much for these conversations.
You're so welcome! We thoroughly enjoy doing them!
Thank you again so much. You've given my more thought for Sunday's Sermon. I think it is important that this Gospel used the term Canaanite Woman. It is Mark's Gospel that talks about her as a Syro-Phonecian. Matthew uses a term that doesn't just designate her as a Gentile but as 'the old enemy' of the Israelites. Canaanites were a culture/society that was long gone, relegated to a history before Rome and Babylon, before Samaritans and divided Kingdoms, before Pharisees and Sadducees. Canaan and Canaanite didn't exist in the first century. Matthew is making an issue of her 'Canaaniteness'. Yet the "So what ...?" for the readers / audience (throughout Matthew, not just here) seems clear that the Gentiles are not excluded. Actually, I think Anne put it more strongly, that the Gentiles are welcomed. Thanks all!
You all are so terrific! Your conversation blesses me every week. Thank you!
And thank you for your encouragement, Rich.
Thanks again for a really helpful discussion
Thanks team. Hope Gillian feels better soon!
Thanks guys, I love these discussions and this one was exceptional
It's so lovely to think of you joining us in our places here from your place in Zambia.
I continue to be impressed and amazed by the depth of insights you (and other contributors) offer week after week. Thank you so much!
And thank you for being so encouraging!Would you like to be on the panel one week, Rich?! There's no reason why not!
@@annevangend742 Thank you so much for the kind invitation, and perhaps down the road a bit I will be in a better position to respond yes than I am right now. Peace and blessings this Holy Week. Rich
great stuff folk
Listened to this as we have a quiet day with snow flakes heavy in the air now touched down in UK! . Having been through the cyclone and week long power cuts in Hawkes bay that you were talking about , we are thankful for all the kindnesses that made our time in NZ including with you Ann and Michael so special and grateful that internet can be a tool for good even though also it can seem like an invasive power.
Over here in the Uk and I wanted to say thank you, I look at for this each week to get me started on my sermonising :)
That's lovely to know!
Thank you for being so vulnerable Peg. thank you for not editing this out
So well done as always. Thank you! A blessed Christmas to all of you.🎄❤️
I hope yours has been wonderful as well!
Great work team. Have a wonderful Christmas.
You too Chris!
These are so helpful in thinking about sermon prep, but also feeding me in my own discipleship. Thanks so much!

I am so grateful to have stumbled onto your conversations. I really enjoy exploring parables that are not at first reading "clear cut".
We're delighted you're finding them helpful, Rich. It's fun the way that something that is essentially an aid for local people in our little diocese can still be viewed all over the world!
I so appreciate listening in on your conversations. So much that is helpful! Thank you!
Great to hear!
I appreciate your insights. Thank you!

Very interesting conversation and the idea of a balance between active and contemplation. I feel it is about active contemplation. I feel Jesus called Martha to do her work in contemplation.
