Drumming Lesser Spotted and Great Spotted Woodpeckers in the New Forest National Park
A short video featuring drumming Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (LSW) and Great Spotted Woodpecker (GSW), taken at a private site in the northern New Forest on 27 Feb 2023. The LSW can be heard at approx 5, 11, 22, and 31 secs, and the GSW at approx 12, 20, 25, and 30 secs. The comparison between the two at 30-31 secs is particularly useful. To my ear, LSW drums more softly and rapidly than GSW, and for longer, often with a shorter interval between drums (although not in the example provided here).

They are so beautiful and cute! 🥰 Such a lovely collection of these Pine Martens👏👏👏
what shall we do with the shareholders of those companies???? the one that milk you through your bills keep the major part and cut the expenses to reach THAT POINT....
Horrible that this is allowed. In Australia all sewage must be properly treated thru a series of treatment ponds and also chemical treatment before it is ready to be discharged into the sea. Raw sewage is not allowed to be dumped in this way. This is awful.
Should also test river discharges for ammonia.
These buggers should be fined heavily for poisoning these beautiful waterways. It nearly makes me sick to watch.
Bastard Tories
Fantastic presentation that shouldn’t be allowed to pollute the rivers so why do they I suppose it’s all about the money honey
Ok zoo heev 👍👍
👍👍👍👍👍🎵🎵🎵

Braw footage , Great to see the PM kits ! 👍👍👍👍 I also get a Blue Tit obsessed with the camera.
Very nice Video 🎄❤️🎄📸👍
Martens & their kin are absolute savages!! Amazing creatures. Thank God they aren't bear size!!!
Great video guys and excellent seeing that the Martens are thriving - I have some friends that live near Limoges and was lucky enough to get some superb footage of them on trail cameras - we only saw one out in daylight, a big male crossing the road in front of us mid morning and looked like he was on a mission - keep up the good work
Nice shots! I was hoping to see a pair of blue tits at the end, though ;) The Pine Martins are amazing creatures. Had some in my yard this past summer that killed every rodent and bunny they could.
So, Pine Martens? Remnant population or sneaky re-introduction?
Bit of both. Hunted to extinction by the beginning of the 20th century in England, but a small population held on in Scotland. Now gradually being reintroduced back into England to level the playing field with the invasive Grey Squirrel, and strangely enough they seem have developed a particular taste for them. Our native Red Squirrel can easily avoid them as unlike their American cousins they are much lighter, and are able to go out onto the thinnest of branches where the unfortunate Grey's can't. Hopefully they'll start being introduced into other parts of Britain. Look out Grey's! 😂
I have a question, do you think that such a dry summer with dried up streams would reduce the use of log bridges and therefore reduce the number of records of Pine Martin?
Thanks John - the survey started in March and ran through to late July, the NF streams were only dry when surveying the last (fourth) area and by chance that area generated the most records. I think regardless of water level the crossings are still favoured as they provide a fast and efficient way to cross the streamway - most of the streamways we focussed on in the north of the Forest were incised and therefore would require more effort to cross regardless of water level, so any natural crossing would still be the most efficient way to get across. In addition, like most mammals, Pine Marten appear to be creatures of habit, using established transit routes and therefore are likely to continue using crossings that are part of a regular route.
And it all ends up in the marine food chain ............. who's up for a seafood dinner with sides?
I was visiting Cornwall recently as a ger,man tourist. Unbelievable to discharge sewage nowadays. Hopefully the weather was bad so I don't had to swim. It is also not nice to imagine eating fish and chips from nearby fish. You can solve it if you want. We did it.
Blinking crap
Disgusting 🤢
Hopefully the pine marten can bring about a reduction in grey squirrel numbers!
Thank you for highlighting this problem!
why is it a problem? the people voted to get rid of all EU regs and Tories keep delivering. Let's wait when the rest will go - Mogg can't wait to implement it. The problem will be then.
There should never be raw sewage discharged anywhere When I was in a school science class back in the early 70's, we did a lesson on water and sewage and we were told how the sewage is filtered over and over again until in the end it was almost clean before being discharged anywhere. I thought all water companies would be doing this and I'm shocked to keep hearing that this doesn't happen.
FAB video! Thank you!!
The new forest will try to ban anything that is fun in its entirety. Best to avoid a place like this like a plague of Ebola and spend your money elsewhere.
This is why you shouldnt "wild swim"
With all the building going on throughout the country, the situation is only going to get worse.
Absolutely disgusting! As a fisherman i find this highly disturbing! Wading through poo isn't nice when trout fishing!
I agree. These people are evil to pollute nature
Has this been discussed with Southern Water,Environment Agency local councils and yes your local MP,s.All of those have both responsibility and accountability. This is a health hazard and river environmental issue with effects on farming wdlife and local people..and many more downstream
Fill the discharge site with concrete, that’ll sort it out!
Excellent idea blocking a CSO but where would that water go? Oh yeah back up through your toilet
Other countries have separate collectors for rainwater and wastewater.
We are an Island of fat-burgers surrounded by shit and wet wipes. This is worse than Victorian times.Cholera and dysentery will become common place. Public Health should be involved or has that been sold off as well.Thank you for posting.
Best post!
🙏🥴why did you “ even think “ about leaving EU . Colonialism is over. let the royals give their fortune to the people of Little Briten “ we ♥️U
Mind your own f*cking business. The EU is not the be all and end all of life. I guarantee there is sewage floating about in the EU too.

@@mogznwaz you are right to be frustrated! Your English is very un Europe 🤣F is No Go 😎
Fictive name! I really am very sorry for the Britz. For the first time in history 70 years of no war . Economically ( I am over 60 nearly 70, just info) we cannot survive if we don’t “ stand together “ times have changed 🙏and mostly for us people. You seem to be even more intelligent, reflected, Historien/ Sun reader. Life is a circle of REALITY 🙏all the best to you and take care of your loved ones! Christmas without… vegetables, fish… regulations is more than important for the NOT ELITE!
Just the first of many, Italy will be next. The EU “your country will be in ruin” The reality “we have too many jobs, do you want more money to come work for me” 😂 COVID showed the EU for what they are, jealous bitter nazi struggling to deal with there own problems. Enjoy being OWNED by the French and Germans 👍🏻 we are free just like 100years ago.
They should build large CSO lakes to catch the overflow and then air rate the waste water so it is full of oxygen to allow algae to grow. The algae should then consume all of the nitrates and any other nutrients in the water to clean it. Afterwards once it has setteled release the cleaner waste water free from solids into the river systems. It may not be the cleanest water but it should be cleaner than it was in its raw form.
Immense quantities of methane pollution contributing to climate change
@@FemboyEngineer Climate Change is a natural ebb and flow.
We have the same problem in Kent. I think we need to hold back paying them, till they sort it out.
We are Southern Water too. Shame on them.
YES THEYRE BACK IN THE FOREST
I have noticed a sewage smell regularly near the bridge over the Lymington for over 1 year or more very foul smell. I keep meaning to contact the EA. Is there a sewer outfall there. Strong smell when you walk fast. I never remember smelling this many years back. Has anyone noticed.?
There are regular discharges of untreated sewage effluent from the wastewater treatment works operated by Southern Water at Brockenhurst during/after rainfall (called combined sewer overflows), and lots of smaller-scale discharges from private residences in the lower reaches. Worth reporting to the EA anyway and make sure they agree to call you back with a response once they have investigated!
@@wildnewforest1346 Thank you for your reply. It has been quite a stench raw sewage even near the new Redrow housing by the bridge surpised others have not commented. Was not aware people could discharge also privately from homes quite shocking.. Keep up the good work. Great channel very informative wild New Forest. I will contact the EA
Deadly bud
This is awful!!!
I plan on visiting the New Forest when the lockdown has lifted. Can you recommend any decent campsites please?
Brilliant, Russell! Keep them coming, please.
Very interesting and well presented.
Brilliant.
Really interesting, thank you.
Great informative video Russell & well presented. Thanks for posting.
Interesting vid Russell. I see lots of fungi in the forest but I'm no expert and never know the names of the different species. I have subbed to see more 😀
Really liked the video, very informative. Hope you do more! (A few times you said “you can probably see” but I couldn’t, could we have more close ups please)? ☺️
