    You should always level your tripod before doing your 'true north' setup. A level tripod will give you the most accurate GOTO positioning when you start using the telescope. I have a small 'Tee' bubble level with two bubbles for the X and Y directions. I set it on a flat spot on the telescope's base (by the battery compartment), and adjust the legs until both bubbles are centered. Next, you should make sure the tube is level. I set my 'zero' on the dial angle indicator on the side of the tube using the bubble level sitting on top of the tube. Once this is set (only needs to be done once), then all you need to do is adjust your tube up and down until the dial reads zero. Taking care in the setup at this point will ensure that your alignment star(s) will be near the center of the crosshairs when the scope is finished slewing to them. It will also provide better tracking during your observing sessions.

    I can do many nights of viewing on one set of C cells. It really depends on your slewing time vs your observing time.

    I was interested in how the clamping bolt fitted as i find the meade instruction book confusing as to where the springs washers and bolts go. Its not 100% clear to my simple brain. But other than that good video thanks

    • @kevinh9262
      @kevinh9262 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can 'chase' the moon ;) Yes, you can easily position the moon using the spotting scope, but if you want to stay on a particular feature of the moon, you would need to be able to track it. With no power, you have to loosen and tighten knobs, and I guarantee you will be all over the place.

    Thank you for the overview. I'm sure that you don't mean to suggest that only women might have trouble setting up a heavy scope, because there are women who are stronger than both of us. Setting up a heavy scope can also be a challenge for young children or anyone with a physical problem like lower back pain.

    • @patrickzumberge201
      @patrickzumberge201 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was trying to be helpful by accentuating the fact that it's heavy! The majority of men ARE stronger than women! You don't have to choose to be offended by everything you hear. Even on a helpful instructional TH-cam video for crying out loud!!! Get over yourself

    This is my first go to telescope. I have several telescopes in my stash. Isn't it true that even if the little computer thing goes on the blink or your batteries die that you STILL have an 8" telescope that can be manually moved around? I don't think it would just be a paperweight. Folks need to learn their way around the sky so they can find stuff on their own. Just saying...

      is it equipped with an equatorial mount?

    • @Jean-rl9zu
      @Jean-rl9zu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alvaro_-sc1bj The one I have mounts on what appears to be a really heavy duty tripod. There are knobs to losen and sway the scope unimpeded so I'm guessing it isnt an equatorial base.

    • @rachelhiggins
      @rachelhiggins ปีที่แล้ว

      This was always my fear. So if the motor drive breaks you can still manually use it as if it was a Dobsonian? I'm looking for a smaller scope than my Dob so I can take it when travelling

    • @Jean-rl9zu
      @Jean-rl9zu ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rachelhiggins Yes! Just loosen the knobs that prevent you from easily moving the scope.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!! You did a fantastic job explaining how to set up. I especially like the tip of using a bungie cord to tame the tripod legs! I just got my scope (second hand) 3 days ago and now i feel more confident about how to set up!

    I think that a JMI wheeley bar would be a useful accessory for this scope, if it is intended for backyard use. You would leave it mounted on the wheeley bars so you don't have to set up and take down. That's what I'm doing. Great video.

    Very nice video. Very easy to understand. I have this scope too and I agree it's heavy. I have to carry out the tripod and scope separately. Mine is on a wedge and so it angled at 90' to the wedge when I polar align. Its set to my degrees latitude for Birminghan UK. I then do a rotation to make sure polaris is still centralized. 🎯 It took me a long time to figure it out with the help of you tube vids like yours.

    Hello I would like to congratulate you for the fantastic video !! My name is Lucas Jardel and I live in Brazil. I work in an educational institution where recently, almost 1 year, we also acquired a Meade, the same one that you show in the video. However, there are certain problems regarding alignment, because even if I insert all the coordinates in the telescope, it cannot align itself, it just rotates on its own axis without stopping. I have tried to find a solution in several places, but none has managed to solve this problem. I wonder if you could help me solve this problem, would you be very grateful if you could !?

      Is there any chance that you have to tell it that you are in the southern hemisphere? I would think there is a setting for this on the hand controller.

    • @kevinh9262
      @kevinh9262 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JamesAdams-ev6fc There's not a 'hemisphere' setting, but maybe it gets this information from your observing site, which is found in Setup->Site. You can specify the lat/lon coordinates as a named site, and select that site for your observing session. I used to have 'Backyard', 'Ft. McKavett', and 'Ft. Davis' entered as my observing sites in Texas.
