Mike & Vanessa: Adventures around Southern Africa
Vanessa and I spent 6 epic weeks traveling around Southern Africa including Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Saw a crazy amount of animals in the bush, got in some rafting, hiking, camping, quad-biking, a wedding, safari tours and a whole bunch of site seeing.
Here's some of the highlights:
• Victoria Falls and rafting the Zambezi river
• Climbing massive sand dunes in Sossusvlei
• Braais on the beach in South Africa
• Seeing our mates get married
• Quad biking in in Swakopmund
• Flying into the Okavango Deta and exploring on foot with a local
• Waking up to the sound of lions and hippos at Oddballs camp
• Seeing an amazing amount of animals at Chobe National Park
• Climbing up Lions Head in Cape Town

Yeah, I'm not great at skiing, but I used to be worse. This is me as a nube a few years back on the Turoa Ski field (Mt Ruapehu) trying to keep up with Vanessa.

Kayaking the Chateau Queyras Gorge

'Chateau Q' is a stunning narrow gorge on the Guil River (French Alps). It can get pretty gnarly at high water, but since we were late in the season this year the low water conditions made it look much more inviting.

Absolutely stunning gorge! It required a lot of scouting as we didn't know the river. We had to get out of our kayaks frequently to inspect the rapids. It's hard to kayak (and breathe) in Tibet due to the high altitude. Plus getting permission from the Chinese government to do anything is an absolute ball ache. Kayaking the Gronda - Italy

Spent a week in Valsesia and kept coming back to to do laps on the Gronda. It's a short, steep run, (only a few hundred meters long) with a bunch of great drops for boofing. It flows through the comune of Rassa (Piedmont), with a medieval footbridge over the final rapid to take in the view. Just a little further down the river it flows into the Sorba slides. Stoked to finally kayak this elusive local waterfall! The Mangareia Stream is a is little known creek the Wairarapa, near Bideford. It runs alongside private farmlands, with a small catchment that only flows after heavy rain. It was choked up with trees and brown from flooding farmland but it made up for this with a number of unique features, drops, slides and an impressive 11 meter waterfall. ...

Twice a year the power company release a bunch of water from Lake Whakamarino. This turns the upper section of the Waikaretaheke River into fast flowing rollercoaster of a river. Continuous whitewater through flooded bush and trees. Near impossible to scout with few eddies to speak of. It's well worth the trip for experienced kayakers. It's been a while since I was last in Thailand but it's always worth chatting with the local rafting companies for advice.
