Once I went to a vet with my dog and he said: Dogs belong to people, cats belong to places. I never went back. Owning is a harsh word. I have been near dogs for life, I have been part of a herd, I have dog friends, but even when I have payed for a dog I have never owned one. A name for a dog is not an owner call. When you understand that you really start to love a dog that loves you back with out any human limit. To a dog you are not a breed. I think I have learned that from them.

You do not own a dog. They own you. My dog chose to live with me 15 years ago just as my mothers dog did the same. Mum rang me to say a stray dog had arrived and he was on the door step. I arrived home to find the doorway occupied by a large irish wolfhound who would not let me pass. I had a difficult relationship wih this dog over the next 16 years. He bit me several times over that time. You had to negotiate with him.

If you love & bond with them, you learn things that non-cat people will never understand. In particular, every feline has a unique personality, in how they interact humans & other cats, their likes & dislikes, temperament, etc. They're all affectionate, but express it in different ways. As for psychological problems, I swear, I have one who has "Attention Deficit Disorder," and another with "Anti-Social Personality Disorder" (toward other cats, not me). Also, the one with ADD, often walks around with her tongue partially sticking out. 😛
