You know you've said it before... STFUandFish!
This is the video channel for my (mis)adventures. You never know what will pop up here!
I try to create fun and educational videos around my interests. They may be hiking, or photography, or microcomputer/microcontroller setup and configuration, fly fishing or a destination trip.
A lot of my videos are driven by user questions and I strive to provide an answer or at least get them going the right direction :-)

This saved my pico, it was the only way I could figure out how to delete the data with it being write protected
well done
Thank you! Hoping it eases frustration for people.
Hello, I encountered a problem, which is the same as the comment below. "make:***[Makefile:24:dump1090]Error 1" has been changed for several days, and it doesn't work. Come and ask for help. Thank you.
I will do another video on this topic very soon. Hopefully we can find the bug or a better release of dump1090. Stay tuned!
Thanks for the video, love the handle! Running a Pi5, and all goes well, but after make, there is no executable in the dump1090 directory. Here are two excerpts of the console: dump1090.c: In function ‘modesInit’: dump1090.c:141:5: warning: ‘ftime’ is deprecated: Use gettimeofday or clock_gettime instead [-Wdeprecated-declarations] 141 | ftime(&Modes.stSystemTimeBlk); | ^~~~~ /usr/bin/ld: interactive.o:/home/skent/dump1090/dump1090.h:373: multiple definition of `Modes'; dump1090.o:/home/skent/dump1090/dump1090.h:373: first defined here Any ideas? Is there a call/variable/command that is different in Bookworm as opposed to previous versions of the OS? Thanks, Steve
Sorry, I thought I replied to some of these, but TH-cam says I didn't! ;) I will do another video on this very soon. Hopefully we can find the bug or a better release of dump1090. Stay tuned!
my raspberry i believe that it died! no shows green light to moment of connect to my pc!. 2 months ago last time i used, and now its not working
Try to power something else with that power supply, if it works then it's most likely the Pi.
I get this error “usb_claim_interface error -6” during rtl_test
I will do another video on this very soon. Hopefully we can find the bug or a better release of dump1090. It seems the repo I mentioned hasn't been kept up to date. Stay tuned!
yes it is worked properly yahuu
Thanks!!!!! New Sus!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for the sub!
I love youu
<3<3<3<3<3<3<3
You're welcome! That made me chuckle! Glad it helped!
thank you bruh u save my life its not because this video tuturial i will throw away my pi pico :(
You're more than welcome! I had the same problem, thankfully an eagle eyed viewer put me on the right track! Figured this was worth a video!
I watch this again. I miss the videos Papi.
I will start making videos again soon. As you know, I don't have much time outside of work and things around the house. But I will start making them soon. I have to fix my video editing software too. It's not rendering drop files for me to edit the smaller files. And my PC can't handle the big files :-) But I'll start spending some time to figure it out.
Hiw to rigth click and left click???
The intent of this was only to move the mouse in order to keep a screen unlocked and a session active on a network. Randomly clicking could have unintended consequences depending on where you leave the pointer sitting. That said, it would be very easy to add in a click. Look at random.randrange. It would be best to write the code that after x seconds the pointer moves to a safer space on the screen - and then in that space describe a box and then generate the clicks within that box.
bro thank you so much i was nearly about to throw the board out the window and u saved me thanks a mil
You are welcome! That's why I did it. I got slightly frustrated one day and started document hunting, only to have a viewer message me on Facebook with the solution. Figured I'd make it easier on the people that followed behind me and ran into the same issue.
Hey what happened to you and your videos? Hope your ok...
Doing well. Just have been super busy at work and haven't had any time. Will be putting up a video (of some sort) soon.
thank you
You're welcome.
using a different usb port fixed the rtl_test error for me
Good idea!
Why will this NOT print to serial monitor?
th-cam.com/video/dI6tdO-r-A4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=nPqiThnQLCFGAUv6&t=492 Hope this helps
the problem is my pico isnt showing up as a drive when I connect it, it says the usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it.
Try it on another computer (if available). Make sure your USB cable is a data cable. (some only provide power) Press and hold the BOOTSEL button while plugging it in, see if that connects.
@@RickMunday thanks I actually tried a different USB port and it worked
@@ethanwashoe5868 Sweet!
Glad it was fixed!
You didn’t show underneath.
The entirety of the soldering is done on the underside of the board.
All done on the underside. Is there something specific you'd like to see on it?
@@RickMunday oh, I see the rows are already internally connected. I thought you you would need to solder a line from the pico rails to the terminal rails. OK, great video. I do appreciate you taking the time to make it.
I have followed your steps, but after plugging it back in, the drive CIRCUITPY wasn't displayed. How should I handle this?
My obvious first question is: is the USB cable you are using data ready? Is it the same cable you flashed circuitpy to the pico with? Is it a RasPi Pico or an aftermarket RP2040? Windows, Mac or Linux PC? If you press BOOTSEL and you plug it in, does it mount as an RPI-RP2 device?
@@RickMunday I have completely handled the problem, thank for helping me
Are you ok?
Huh? The video is 3 years old
I followed the article and then double checked it via this video. I get to running ./dump1090 --interactive and all I get is an error -bash: ./dump1090: no such file or directory when I am in the dump1090 folder
What version of dump1090 are you running? Did you build from source or download a pre-built binary? Also is it the FA version? Just for giggles, try running it as sudo.
@@stfuandfish followed your instructions. No luck on sudo either. Had to replace the .h and .c doles as per that link
Odd. I'll have to try a reinstall and see if I can duplicate it. I don't remember if it was this video or the other one on dump 1090, but a user had a similar issue and downloaded The tarball from GitHub rather than the creator's website. If I recall correctly if addressed a couple problems with the path. I will try and get to it this week.
any info on this as i am also getting this error@@stfuandfish
@@stfuandfish Stuck with this same error, was a solution ever found?
Thanks for that. Just got a kit and wasn't sure what to do with it, since no instructions and this showed me what I need to do. Thank you!!!
You're welcome! Glad it helped!
Thank you very much
You're more than welcome!
Great step by step tutorial. THANKS!
You're welcome!
Interesting repurpose use of a toolbox-roll-container.
I can't take credit for the idea, but it seemed to be a very logical use :-) since this was only ever used for IT tools, I didn't have to worry about anything nasty lingering from chemicals. There's been virtually no change to this since the video. It just worked so well. I've thought about adding a large mAh battery under the lid with a couple USB plugs protruding, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
I cannot get the rtl_test to work properly even after doing the resolution.
What are the errors or any errors you are getting?
this guy needs more subs
Thanks! Nice to hear.
Thank you ! 👍🤝
I've bought a few items from adafruit, great company, they have quite a lot of things for projects and such.
I'm not too worried about it, my Raspberry PI 400 is rarely ever connected to the internet (I do every once in a while to update the OS and software, but take it back off the internet once it's done), but it's usually dedicated to running my RTL-SDR (and toying around with Box86 and run some x86 windows games), I don't do anything else with it other than that. A Raspberry Pi 400 (slightly overclocked) with a 7" touchscreen running SDR++ and a RTL-SDR V3 all being powered from a 20k mAh power bank that gets recharged by solar.
I've been thinking about dedicating a Pi4 to an SDR with the controller board once finished. I just need to find the right software. Compared to SDR-Play most for Linux are laggy or lacking some of the features or have to high of a learning curve. It's the one thing I miss about SWLing/Scanning in the 70's as a kid and then the mid-80's through early 90's, it wasn't overly complex. In particular with SWL in Germany when I lived there though the late 80's early 90's, you didn't need a fancy setup. I ran a couple different receivers over the years tied into my C-64 with the MFJ decoder and could hear pretty much everything. Now, sheesh... 🤣You need a data center!
@@stfuandfish I was quite surprised with how well SDR++ ran on the Pi, seems to work well with the touch screen as well, I rarely ever have to use the mouse to manipulate SDR++.
@@madmax2069 That's actually what I'm playing with now. It lacks some keyboard controls I'd like to have to make this interface work with it. Mainly, some controls only work when the mouse has focus on that area of the interface. (github.com/AlexandreRouma/SDRPlusPlus/wiki/UI-Controls) The viewer that sparked the build idea only has limited use of one hand, so that's kind of a key factor for this build. BUT I'd love to have a full controller as well.
@@stfuandfish Ugh, my comment went poof, have you tried getting into contact with the dev of SDR++ to ask if said functionality can be added?, He has a Discord server as well you could ask in as well.
Nice video!
Thanks!
I enjoyed your video and the directions on your website. They were helpful. I had to deal with the blacklist problem too. The website doesn't say anything about reboot, but the video did. Everything else seemed to go okay until I tried to run Dump1090. Then I got "no such file or directory". I notice in your video when you type "ls", a file with the name "dump1090" with no file extension shows up. I don't see that file in my installation and it's not on the GitHub site either. I've no idea how to fix that. Any help you could give me would be wonderful. 🙂 I'm using an RPi 4 w/ RPi OS (32 bit) on a completely fresh installation with nothing else installed before I follow the directions on your site. Done it twice and have the same problem. The dump1090 file without the file extension isn't there.
for some reason its not working for me
Are you holding the BOOT/SEL button on power up? Once you do this it should open up in the appropriate Files application for your OS. Then you drag and drop or paste the nuke UF2 into the Pico folder and the Pico will reset. Also, make sure your USB cable is a data cable
Any luck?
Does this reset the wifi settings for the Pico W?
It's a complete erase, so I would assume so.
Papi you forget the ending link to video.
Fixed it. :) Thanks for catching that!
I like the old musik for waiting better, Papi.
Ooops!
O wow! i look at this and think i can never need or learn it.
It's not that difficult. I find the programming harder than the circuitry sometimes.
Hi! I have such a question, is it possible to upload a map without the Internet?
In Virtual Radar? You can use two map sources, see www.virtualradarserver.co.uk/Documentation/WebServer/DataSourcesOptions.aspx
Lambchop is a TACAMO airborne command post call I'd read, good catch!

This is a terrific video. I love the oaks in this area, black, white, and some bur oaks. I've been measuring them and estimating their ages. So far, one - not far from the gun club, dates to early 1800s. Could be a pre-settlement tree. Thanks for this video.
It is easily my favorite preserve in Cook county. The quiet is the absolute win! I've was trying to find an out of the way spot to just have a "chill spot" for the days I just want to get away from it all. I've gone there and sat and made lunches, leaned up against a tree and just took a nap. :) Love that place!
Sorry I did not come across this video earlier. I really enjoyed in! I've now got this trail on my "list:. Best wishes, Jeff
I've not gone back and completed the whole thing, but it's on my list as well. Great cycling path.
Gracias todo bien
Thanks! I bought this & was surprised there were no instructions. Very kind of you to post a build to help others. Cheers!
You are more than welcome. I had the same issue, so I made the video. :)
Wear a mask, for what ?
At the time this video was recorded, it was peak pandemic.
So I received another comment via email, but I can't see it here. "I have been working on this project for several days. I cannot get past the blacklist error. I have created the file in nano multiple times but you go so quick and I don’t think what you have have written in the blog corresponds to the command you execute to save the file based on your video. I get the same error every time I do rtl_test. I am about ready to sell it all on eBay." Several possibilities: 1. You may not need to blacklist your SDR. I recently added another setup and didn't have to blacklist anything. 2. The blacklist device name has changed (chipset version?) 3. I made a typo. What is the exact error returned from rtl_test?
this helped me make sure I assembled it correctly, thank you!
You're more than welcome! Glad it helped!
