It’s a genocide not a war. Do people care about whether they are hurting the feelings of Zionists though? And do Zionists care about whether they are hurting the feelings of people trying to stop the genocide? I think the focus is solely on stopping the genocide not on whether or not we hurt genocide supporters feelings. There’s only one side being actively genocided and that’s the only side that deserves any attention.

Interesting that Ms. Labare voices concern that her rent controlled apartment in Queens might become a "slum." (1:01:26)

I would like to advocate for the Village to repurpose the Ann Oliver House at 5 Broadhead ave as an African American Cultural Center given its "historical significance" to the New Paltz Community. The maintenance or erasure of that space will definitely be a reflection of our values.

I do apologize that I was not able to join in the meeting. I am a teacher at New Paltz High School, and school starts at 8AM. I am glad that this meeting was able to take place. I consider the Niimi-New Paltz relationship something to cherish.

Are there plans or committments for the rest of the 130 acres owned by Mr Moriello after this subdivision, is that also forever wild or just still owned fee sim;e by Mr Moriello?

I am a Village resident who would like to supply and plant and initially care for a Hawthorne tree on the berm on the north side of the parking area of the Town of New Paltz Community Center. I am now broaching the idea with Chris Marx, Town Highway Supervisor, who has an interest as the berm is used to pile snow when the lot is cleared and the tree would put a limit on where the snow pile can go. My interest is in creating shade, and beauty as the area is used by walkers and during Covid by the Community center summer camp. The tree is not ideally placed for shade because it is also a visual screen separating the Village Arms parking lot to the north from the Community Center parking lot to the south, enhancing both properties and breaking up the forever look of the asphalt. I am no arborist but understand the Hawthorne supports native pollinators and it’s (small) fruits are eaten by native and naturalized species of birds and mammals, www.mywoodlot.com/item/hawthorn-for-wildlife, grownative.org/native_plants/green-hawthorn/ . A friend has this tree, which is about 5 feet tall. I do not know the exact species. I would like to plant it because it is available to me but I would consider purchasing a similar tree that has endorsement of the shade commission if that were the case. I would take care of transplantation and commit to water and otherwise care for the tree for an initial 5 years, doing it myself and if necessary employing someone to do so. (If required I would put up a small bond to ensure this, but I do not know the process for bonding). I cannot however commit to care for the tree in perpetuity. Would the Commission support the tree being planted, and/or the Village or Town taking responsibility for the tree eventually?

for those of you that said you couldn't hear me, here is my speech: You think that just because it’s already happened, the past is finished and unchangeable? Oh no, the past is cloaked in multi-colored taffeta and every time we look at it we see a different hue - Milan Kundera We are here tonight to honor a much beloved woman who played an important role in the life and history of 19th Century New Paltz. Born around 1800 in the Town of Wawarsing, Julia was one of possibly six enslaved individuals in the home of Benjamin Kortwright, according to the census. At that time there were 308 enslaved people living in our town, about 11% of the population. Dereck Wynkoop, who lived at the end of Plains Road had 16 enslaved people, the largest number of slaves in New Paltz, in his residence. By the time Julia was two, she, along with her mother and sister, were sold to Thomas Merrit, who lived on what is now Libertyville Rd, at the site of the County Pool and Fairgrounds. In just a few years, her mother was sold off leaving Julia motherless. When Julia was about 14, Philip Lefever decided to purchase Julia and give her as a “wedding present” to his son Andries Lefever and his future daughter in law, Magdalena Elting. They spoke Dutch so Julia, similar to the experience of Isabella Bomfree, Sojourner Truth, had to learn another language. It is assumed that, at that time, Julia met Thomas, who according to Church records, married her in May of 1827, just two months shy of the date when most enslaved people in the state would be freed. Initially, Julia and Thomas were both using the surname Lefever. By 1840, Thomas and Julia changed their last name to Jackson. According to Julia’s own words, “some slaves when they were set free would take the given names of their father and adding a termination to it would adopt it for their own surnames.” Therefore, we assume that Thomas’ father’s name was Jack and they added son to form Jackson. . After Julia’s husband died in 1889, she moved to Mulberry Street and lived there for most of her remaining years. She was known as one of the Town historians, often sought after for her knowledge of early 19th century New Paltz. She was a singer, storyteller and spiritual leader. Julia died on Mulberry Street at the age of 98, the oldest resident of our town. There is no tombstone in NP Rural Cemetery to mark her grave in a plot in the area of the cemetery reserved for African Americans, so we embarked on this project to honor this wonderful, talented and important citizen of New Paltz so that she can be properly commemorated. Thinking back to the quotation I cited at the beginning of this talk, in light of the current awakening to ways that our country has consistently diminished and disrespected our black, brown and native citizens, we now view the multi-colored taffeta of New Paltz history with a different hue. All the newspaper articles and other records referred to Julia as Aunt Judy Jackson, and because she was so beloved, we did not see “Aunt” as a diminutive appellation, and our plaque was designed with that name. We realize now that language was used to diminish and dominate, so another plaque with Julia’s real name will be placed in Hasbrouck Park to honor her legacy to New Paltz.

Hey y’all! Sorry I missed the meeting. Josephine all of your information is fascinating, thank you for sharing. Just a few thoughts on the Wynkoop designations. I would just advise against making the Broadhead house (5, the Depuy house?) a highlight. We want to focus on Jacob Wynkoop, and while I love that it was somewhat of a collaborative effort, I feel as if it once again highlights a white man, and takes away a bit from the point of highlighting the town’s Black history. It’s important to acknowledge, I would just not necessarily double down in making that the focus by any means. But I absolutely love the idea of the walking tour and signage, especially with tourists looking for things to do outside around town. I also agree that crowdfunding could definitely help and be a useful tool. I’m a local business owner and I’d be happy to help in any way I can. I do agree with Zach that the Church Street house, as the first land purchase by a Black woman in the town (1840?) is significant and certainly worth acknowledging. Sorry if I’m messing up any information, trying to remember everything. As far as Pencil Hill is concerned, is there any information about whether or not that was a historically black neighborhood? I asked because a letter I believe written to the town board had mentioned it. Also, not sure if it was discussed and I missed it, but is there any information about the African American Burial Ground bench/sign on Huguenot Street? It’s fairly unkempt, I’ve reached out to HHS and they said it’s on private property. Is that what’s keeping it from being maintained? Can the town do anything about it? I saw there was some discussion about it on Facebook but the information is fairly hard to decipher. In any case, thanks for holding this meeting and sorry I missed it. Hope to hear from y’all soon, I’d really love to help in any way that I can. I just think that infrastructural changes have a lasting and significant impact. -Chris

we are lucky to have a librarian and a mayor with the best interests of the community in their minds and hearts. Both have been doing a very good job for the rest of us. Thanks to John Giralico and Tim Rogers.
