Design through good old-fashioned trial and error.
Making my Dream Chess Pieces
I've wanted to design a chess set for a long time now and have finally made one I'm proud of. The trickiest piece eluding me has been the knight but once I figured that puzzle out the rest kind of fell into place.

3D Printed Utility Blade
มุมมอง 44521 วันที่ผ่านมา
Welcome to my channel! In this video I show my take on making a 3D printed Utility Blade. I wanted it to be small enough to fit in a pocket in my wallet and print fairly quickly. The notches on the sides help with grip and the hole allows it to be connected to keys, lanyard, etc. To download the files and make one for yourself follow this link. www.printables.com/model/1115681-edc-utility-knife...

Making a Camera Case from an Old Tool-Box
มุมมอง 2597 หลายเดือนก่อน
Thank you for watching! Like and Subscribe! I found this old Tool-Box or Tackle-Box at the thrift store and had to restore it. Luckily I had a shoe box busting at the seams with film cameras. I broke the tool-box down as far as i could and stripped all of the paint. Luckily it was in decent shape under all of the old paint. Then I painted everything and built it back up with fresh rivets. Making a Rolex Spoon Rack
มุมมอง 1178 หลายเดือนก่อน
I have some Rolex branded espresso spoons that need a better home than the counter. As far as I know these spoons aren't really made by Rolex. My wife and I got them for free on our honeymoon from a watch shop we went into. They're really cool and make a shot of espresso feel extra fancy. My wife also has some from her great aunt who had a small collection so it's cool to have the memories to l...
lol😂
Cool story, bro. I've heard you can play chess online, maybe where is some API to use robotic arm to move enemy pieces.
I've seen some really intricate ones that move the pieces so you can play friends remotely. I would need a bit more engineering knowledge to make it but would be awesome!
@froooch I've seen your chess pieces have metal core. You probably can use solenoid under chess board propelled by coreXY 3D printer movement system. And generate GCode on the fly to move pieces in predefined trajectories. But robotic arm is cooler.
super cool! I loved watching your design process with your frameworking and iteration drawings! do you work in ux or industrial design?
You hit the nail on the head! Yeah my background is in Industrial Design.
@ super dope! i learned a lot just watching you, and i think that is a unique brand. excited for more!
this is sick! hi from a big YT consumer! inb4 you’re at 1M
Haha I'm a long way off from there but I appreciate the encouragement! Glad you enjoyed it!
@ hell yeah!
monochrome with an accent of orange is the superior color scheme and no one can convince me otherwise.
You have great taste!
i am working on the same thing right now, and i also used silk black pla and white rock filament!
It's a great color combo! What kind of look are you going for?
@@froooch idek tbh
Inspiration will hit! Once you get one, the remainder gets a little easier. Good luck!
Pretty good video, except that only my left ear could hear the Audio. till 3:40
I'll have to look into it! Thank you for letting me know. I might have accidentally turned a channel off in editing.
Love the design! For a course in uni im studying we were tasked to make a design for a chess set. so this is so interessting to see. In the end we made a salvador dali themed set!
That's awesome! What were the elements you used from his art as inspiration? I'm sure it turned out crazy looking in the best way!
Deformed and over dimensions almost melted looking😄
Sick. Did you make a real life version or keep it a design exercise? I wish a chess set was in my curriculum. I did make an ice cream scoop though haha
We made them in caid. With autodesk alias using subdivision. Then 3d printed, sanded and painted them orange and brown! It was super fun
@Vanheden always cool to see them come to life. I don't envy sanding tiny melting pieces though. Lol.
LOL based on the first few seconds of the video, maybe if you redo them the bases should be non-circles 😂
regardless, I love the designs. and the orange felt makes the stone-like surface really pop!
Haha that's honestly a great idea. Haha. I'm usually not this clumsy but these things really got away from me! Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so cool! I’ve always enjoyed watching your wheels turn😊 Now I can watch from afar and feel like we’re hanging out in your garage. Love you buddy!
loved this !! they all look so pretty wow !! i got into chess only a year ago; never really thought about the design of the pieces and the proportions. honestly i was focussed on just learning the game. very fun to see what goes into the pieces themselves. im going to go take a closer look at my current (mass produced) chess set the next time i play !!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I should honestly focus more on learning chess than making pieces. At least now I'm losing games with a pretty set. Haha
You’ve been busy!
Been trying!
I have been looking for something just like this! Except I want one with a thicker blade I can sharpen not a replaceable razor blade. I may adapt this. Thank you.
Oooh I like that! Let me know if you get it to work out!
I really like this! What did you end up using to hold the parts together? They look like bolts.
You're correct! There are 6 30mm m3 bolts. They're a little hard to see being black with the black print.
This is amazing! I have a mini size card game deck.. any chance you’d be able to easily scale this down and/or sell a few boxes?
Probably not easily. If you follow the link I did post the 3d files if you want to give them a lot. A maker named whity also has a parametric box that is super easy to adjust to any size if the dice aren't needed. It was the base I used to make this project.
I really like this. One thing that frustrates me is that I play old school and some block stuff from back in the day. I love my cards…. Not as many really great 60 card options out there. Stores cater to the commander stuff now and there are just a bunch of boulder boxes and that’s pretty much it.
Thank you for the nice comment! Yeah in the last decade the commander stuff has really become the norm. I remember back when i played standard there were a ton of unique options. But a lot of that market seems to have disappeared. If I start back into a 60 card format I'll have to find a unique spin on a deck box for it!
I only clicked the video because I play the pokemon tcg, and that uses a 60 card format. I might be trying to print this and try it with 60, and try modifying it if needed.
@@vinc4886 Heck yeah! Let me know how it turns out if you end up giving it a go!
You need to send one to Prof and encourage him to do a deck box review exclusively of 3D printed offering.
Honestly not a bad idea. There's a ton of awesome 3d printed MTG stuff out there!
I do not know what commander is. This looks cool tho
I appreciate it! Commander is a way of playing the card game Magic the Gathering. It's a fun and addicting game so beware. Haha
@@froooch I play D&D, but had no idea that MtG used the platonic solids dice too!
@@biodieseler1 Oh yeah! For MTG you need ways of showing buffs to creatures or numbers of creatures and the numbers can get out of hand quick so having all of the options make it so much easier! My play group also just loves to roll d20's to see who goes first and half of them play DND so any excuse to use all the extra dice haha.
Love this design! Would like to see a single latch though to save on hardware!
I'm glad you liked it! I almost did it as a single latch! I wasn't sure if the longer screw and latch would hold as well as 2 smaller ones but it's something I'm curious about and I think could look really striking.
@@froooch I have a similar designed box that I found awhile back that me and my friends have been using, it's slightly different dimensions and doesn't come with that dice tray. I'd be happy to send you the files that I have been using if you want to compare!
Yeah feel free to post the link! I love looking at different designs.
With a multicolor printer this could look even cooler.
Absolutely! I almost went with a bambu printer for that when I bought this one but the price for the flashforge was just right haha. The multicolor might be an upgrade a little down the line.
@@froooch I think I would have made the top lid have the male connector and the dice tray the female. This way you can print custom text on the top with a multicolor printer. Also it would be nice to have a printed sleeve over the latch screws, just for looks. I have printed one for my son. He thinks it's dope AF. Thanks!
@bradgibson1433 Interesting Idea on the screw sleeve. Could be a cool way to add another pop of color! And I'm glad he likes it!!! Means a lot! I'd love to see it if you want to upload a pic to printables.
Clever idea. I like how much thought you put into this. The box looks relatively water-resistant, too, which is a bonus if you live in a rainy environment. I had more than a few cards get soaked and decks outright ruined when I was younger because my backpack and deck carrying solution wasn't nearly as waterproof as I thought it'd be.
Thank you for the kind words! It should be at least splash proof but depends on the 3d printer and settings. And oh boy if I could shake younger me for how I used to store all my old cards. Haha we live and we learn.
Happy Halloween 🎃
Brilliant buddy!❤
Thank you!
So cool buddy!!!
Thank you! Had a lot of fun making it!
Really cool design and great video!
Thank you! Hopefully more to come!
I wasn't ready for the paper cutter to flip over the table like that. I love it!
Glad you liked it! Yeah I didn't really telegraph it haha.
Printer look like cassette 😮
Holy heck that machine is cleaner than most new ones
I really lucked out with it. Didn't look like it made more than a few cuts before I bought it. Just needed the rubber replaced and good as new!
I have this bandsaw I got from an estate sale and it's been collecting dust because it needs to be calibrated.
I still need to dial in 90 on it but the adjuster on the back made getting the blade aligned fairly easy! They're great little tools!
Or. You tighten it enough that it can move with a gentle push but not slip, then adjust with a straight edge. Solution in search of a problem
helps with people that have issues with extremely fine motor skills
The classic way is just a little finicky when you don't need a very specific depth. This is very niche, but i like having it in the drawer next to the tool for quick repeatable depths. Both methods have a spot for me depending on the project. Thanks for watching!
Fine motor skills or just to make some of the regular depths you go to that much faster to get to. Thanks for watching!
nice, I need one for my OM2N
Yeah it's just a nice piece of mind. A little tape does the job in a pinch though!
Good job! So satisfying
And it actually works now!
❤️
I would just buy a new case. 😂
Definitely would have been easier, cheaper, and faster... But Where's the fun in that? Haha
Love the Garbage Disposal Sound Effects!
It's uncanny isn't it? Haha glad you liked it!
How many of those layers were leaded 😅
Honestly a good question... 😅 I should probably get a testing kit for the next project like this. Thank you for the reminder!
Looming forward to the video
Hoping the re-riveting goes well haha.
Neat! Still loving the txt commentary! I'm doing a big(ish) planter box/whatchamacallit from pine. Not A grade but very little or no knots at all. Been doing stock preparation today and yesterday, cause free wood tends to a bit rough :D And one small decorative bowl in the making, from goat willow. Been taking pictures too, for the (never)coming IG account...
Even bought wood is never perfect. Haha. I tend to skip a lot of the stock prep in video because watching me plane for half a video would be a horrible watch haha. I've never heard of goat willow I'll have to look that one up! Hoping all your projects go smoothly!
@@froooch Thanks. Google "puuproffa goat willow"

Love the text commentary! 😅

A really enjoyable watch. I was quite surprised to see that he didn't have tens of thousands of subscribers already. Just some good clean woodworking content. Made me laugh too which is always a plus. Keep it up!
I'm a long way from thousands but thank you! Glad the humor came through too. It's always hard to know what jokes hit without seeing people's reactions. Haha.
I hope this guy blows up. This is quality content, the way the subtitles in the video just basically talk smack on everything he does is gold, definitely earned my subscription
Thank you! Really glad you liked it! Super new to videos so I'm glad I'm doing something right! Lol
@@froooch yeah, you're definitely doing something right, not only did you randomly appear on my recommended page (Glad you did), your content is just entertaining, somewhat educating and funny, keep doing what you're doing man
Huh, at first I glanced the title and thumbnail thinking "Great, another woodworking video that probably is mostly expensive machines and whatnot", I was wrong and was surprised to see you mention my mentor Mr. Sellers. I'm gonna sub your channel, just in case and I'm going to check rest of your videos later this week. " Design through good old-fashioned trial and error. " <- I like this attitude as a fellow woodworker. Keep it up! "Don't let your tools and materials limit you! Get out there any make something!" And this too.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm still new but hopefully each video improves from the previous! Working out of a smaller space made Paul's wisdom priceless. I've had larger shops spaces and tools before and it's fantastic but it's really fun to get things done with limited tools and materials as well!
@@froooch Aye, I got a small corner where I work with my stuff, I don't even have (yet) proper bench, basic table. Firstly I built 2 sawhorses, similar to Paul Sellers style, they have been GREAT. Securing a workpiece without a proper vise can be a challenge, but not impossible. It really makes you think 'out of the box' when your tools, space etc are in the category "make do". Btw, I'm in the process of making IG account of my projects. I'll try to holla at you when that is done :)
@@kimmosaarinen2780I'd love to see your Instagram account when it's up! Sawhorses are great and much better than hunching on the floor. That's what I did when making my bench. It's really annoying to make a bench without a bench. Haha.
Found you first believe it or not!
Haha awesome! Happy to have you! Hope you enjoyed the video!

terrarians the second they start existing
Been absolute years since I played. I was trash. Haha
wont that slip out without a split?
I thought so too when I made my first one! The angle cut into the block and the handle wedge together to make a really solid connection. But the beauty is that you can remove them if either gets too worn down. I have had them loosen in the garage if they've cooled and warmed up a few times but a quick tap on the bench tightens then back up. There are a ton of mallet designs I just really enjoy making this one! I learned this idea from Paul Sellers TH-cam channel if you want to see a master make one. Highly recommend!
Nicely done
