Hi V, is there a route for studying actuary part time, like maybe BSC in Maths and Stats from Unisa?
Yes you can go for maths degree at Unisa. But on your first and second year you must choose maths and calculus and make sure you get 65% or more. That will enable you to write ASSA board exams. But you can write A211 even if you are non member with ASSA
How good were your grade 12 results?
This information was really helpful. Followed your advice to the tee and just passed CB3
Thank you for the video... Can I bring my self made page of formulas into the exam for ifoa exams? 😅Also can I bring my own notes into the exam?
Hi, I am a year 2 undergraduate student, who is doing a degree in actuarial science. I currently have exemptions for CB1 and CB2 from my uni courses and I plan on giving CB3 this year. Can someone pls guide me through the process? I know there is a 6-week business game, and then after 2 weeks we sit for MCQs but there is also this Stage 1 Professionalism Course that I have to take first. Can someone pls guide me on what it is and what does it do with CB3? Also if I fail my MCQs do I have to resit for the whole CB3 again? Also, in my current situation with no extra prior knowledge of CB3 exam material (I know they give the material) how likely I am to pass this exam if I take it this year?
please explain to me what you meany by average students with average degrees, please explain!
Thank you for an honest feedback
Please is actuarial science all about mathematics because I’m not really good at maths, infact I don’t know maths please should I still go for it
I feel your pain. A friend failed CP1 6 times and passed on the 7th attempt. Don't give up. The far you've come is a testament of your ability.
Thank you for the info. Preparing for the exam in the Jan 8, 2024 sitting. Your advice come handy in my prep. I now have a clue on what to expect.
Hi, im planning to take cb3 earlier this year. Mind sharing how it is going so far for you hehe?
How does an actuary earn when doing a graduate program
I'm a Math and Physics educator, And Thinking of Actuarial Route, so My Question Is that Which Course I Can Start With? And Is it possible to do distance learning yo become an actuary?
The is no such thing as distance learning
Thank you for sharing your journey ven❤. I know i am abit late. I am looking into the same career path and everybody says it's tough. I love things that challenge me. I would like to get in touch with you. All i want to say to you is. Keep on going girl keep on trying you will eventually get it❤. Big love and respect.
Thanks for the detailed description of what was charged for!
Hey I love your content, but have got a question, am doing Bachelors of arts in Economics but I want to shift to Actuarial science, is it possible?
probably but bachelors of arts in economics may be better than actuarial science since if u ever dont want to be an actuary, you still have ur economic degree and can do something else in economics instead of being an actuary since actuarial science is ONLY going to get you an actuary job
As an actuary; how do you get funding for your honours degree?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!
Hi, I have registered for CB3 exam from IFOA yesterday only. Can you tell me, till when can I receive the material and online videos?
Hi Richa. Unfortunately it has been a few years since I wrote the CB3 exam so I do not know off hand. Generally speaking though, non-paper based study material is usually available within a week.
Thank you so much for sharing! I am a second year actuarial student. You have mentioned exemptions offered by the university. I recently found out my university doesn’t offer exemptions. Is there a way to acquire the exemptions independently?
What university are you at
There is a way
Hi Kalila. Thank you for watching. The only other way to make progress with your exams would be to start writing the exams directly with the Actuarial Institution. Some institutions require you to have a degree to start writing the exams. This all depends on your location. It might be a good idea to speak to your lecturers to get a sense of what options you have and the viability of writing board exams while completing your degree
hi Ven , is it true that there're few job opportunities for actuaries in SA
Hi Ndabezitha. It's hard to really know for sure whether there are few job opportunities for actuaries in SA but there seem to be a vacancies for actuarial jobs through the year. I struggled to get an Actuarial Analyst position both in 2015 and 2020-2021 but I think the market is very different for South Africans. The number of exams/ exemptions may also influence the number of opportunities available to an individual.
Can I ask how many does it take to be a qualified actuarial scienctist
Hi Phumudzo. The Actuarial Society of South Africa requires an individual to pass or be exempted from 14 exams. The number of years it takes each person depends on their personal circumstances. It can be as short as 5 years including university or more than 10 years.
Hi, does this mean I can do my Actuarial Society exam while am still in Varsity??
Most actuaries in the insurance field say that they barely used any of the stuff they learnt in university. It's more about the thinking capabilities it gives you
Promo'SM 🙄
Thank you for sharing . Enjoyed the video
Thank you Goitse. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Who is more likely to earn more between someone who just completed their honours and someone who completed their degree and went straight to corporate and has 1year experience? (One who does not have honours has less exemptions)
Hi Goitse. It's really hard to tell. I think the number of exams is really a driving factor early on in an actuarial career. The year of experience is likely to have included a lot of on the job training rather than value creation on the part of the graduate. So it is likely that the first year of experience may only be complemented by an inflation increase to salary if no additional exams have been passed. To answer your question, in my opinion the one with Honours is likely to earn more.
Thank you so much for sharing! Very informative
Happy you found this informative Goitse.
Could someone please explain to me what exemptions are in this context, how I would achieve them and anything else they can say on this??
Hi Aren. Each Actuarial society requires a certain number of exams for an individual to qualify as an Actuary. For example, the Actuarial Society of South Africa requires 14 exams. The societies may decide to recognise the modules covered by specific universities when the students get more than a specific mark. This recognition is what is known as an exemption because the student will not need to write the corresponding exam. For example The University of the Witwatersrand offers 9 exemptions in undergrad and 3 exemptions in honours. If a student were to get all 12 by the time they complete university, this would mean that they only need to write 2 board exams.
How many exams are under your belt
Hi Ayanda. Thank you for reaching out. I have 10 out 13 exams so far.
Great video. How many exams you have left?
Thank you. I have 3 exams left
This survey is a bit confusing. Technically a qualified person can call themselves an actuary but but the general public can use the term loosely. Do you think they are referring to actual actuary based on the salaries or people with a couple of exams. Another company that has actuarial salaries based on number of exams passed and experience in SA is SA3. Approximately how many exams do you need to get an entry level job? And do they ask for specific exams in these entry positions?
Hi Fikile. Thank you for pointing this out. I believe the loose definition of an Actuary was used in the article as the figures in the earlier years are too low for qualified actuaries. SA3 was actually my first choice but I couldn't find a published version that is accessible to everyone on their website. If you have a link to this, could you please share. The market for entry level jobs is very competitive. With many graduates entering the market who are likely to have no experience e.g. vacation work, the more exams you have out of the maximum possible number, the better your chances. In the job adverts I have seen, they may ask for a specific number of exams but rarely individual subjects. This is not to say that it is impossible for them to be specific with subjects as well.
Sadly, someone with broad interests and studies diverse but related subjects would be penalized. One should be encouraged to broaden, at least a little, one's areas of study.
hi ven, could you please tell me which university you're going to?
Hi Ebrahim, I went to WITS university from 2011 to 2014.
Venekai to light up or to shine
:). That's right
Isnt it a requirement to do acc and statistics etc to be a actuary?
Do I need accounting and economics? Cause I have Geography and life sciences
Hey how are you doing now Ven? I hope you are closer to your dream ❤️
I don't like how you exercise!😂😂😂
I honestly wish I went for Medicine.
Why do you say that?
HELLO VEN HOPE U WELL , i really appreciate your videos , i am a student at nwu potch doing doing second year physics and planning on writing a211 financial mathematics in 3 months with ASSA , i was wondering what is something that people who didn't study actuarial science in undergrad might not know, and how does the jobb market looks for people who have exemptions but with a degree like physics and chemistry
I also need assistance, I have a similar case. Just with a Master's in Applied Mathematics( pending).
Are all exams open book ?
does uj have all exemptions?[i dont know]
Hi, do you need accounting to do actual science
That's exactly what I needed to know
Thank you for watching Nancy. I am glad you found this useful.
I’m starting my first year of actuarial courses in 3 4 days I’m so scared, nervous and exited at the same time , I’m I choosing the right thing!!?? Because in hightschool I wasn’t studing hard attt all I was very chill, so not I feel like I can’t do it it’s gonna be so difficult for me, buuut I believe in me and I’m gonna work soooo hard to graduate and to become an actuary . Please wish me luck ❤
