I do see two flaws with this. First off if you are willing to use 1 1/4 inch PVC instead of 1/2 inch, you can find an actual four way cross piece fitting instead of a three way that you have to do something weird and difficult to get it to fit. Secondly if you look at the arms in the movie each arm has two joints in it instead of one. Therefore using two 45 degree angle fittings would be better than one 90 degree fitting.
