Distinguished Talk 06: Analog processing by digital circuits
Distinguished Talk 06: Analog processing by digital circuits: fully synthesizable ICs for IoT interfaces by Prof. Dr. Paolo Crovetti (Politecnico di Torino)
Abstract:
Analog integrated circuits do not take advantage of scaling and are easily the bottleneck in terms of cost and performance of integrated circuits targeting emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications. While this challenge is commonly addressed by devising more “digital friendly” analog cells based on traditional design concepts, the possibility to translate key analog functions into digital, so that to implement them by true digital circuits, which fully take advantage of scaling, automated design flow, configurability and portability across technology nodes, is now emerging as a promising alternative. This approach, which challenges the idea that “analog circuits will be always needed”, will be presented and discussed in the webinar, starting from a theoretical background up to its application in the design of digital-based analog and mixed-signal cells integrated on silicon proposed in recent literature.
Short CV:
Paolo S. Crovetti (S’00, M’04, SM’20) was born in Turin, Italy, in 1976. He received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering from the Politecnico di Turin, Turin, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (DET), Politecnico di Torino, Turin. He has coauthored more than 70 articles appearing in journals and international conference proceedings. His main research interests are in the fields of analog, mixed-signal, and power integrated circuits. His recent research activities are focused on non-conventional information processing techniques allowing the fully digital implementations of analog functions and on ultra-low-power IC design for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Prof. Crovetti is a Senior Member of the IEEE and serves as the Subject Editor-in-Chief of IET Electronics Letters in the area of Circuits and Systems and as an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VERY LARGE SCALE INTEGRATION SYSTEMS.

Distinguished Talk 07: Microfluidic Circuits and Antennas: A New Frontier in Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Electronics by Prof. Dr. Carlos Saavedra (Queen's Univ.) Abstract: Fluids have electrical properties that can be exploited for high-frequency circuit design and for flexible electronics. Eutectic gallium, for instance, is a conductive fluid that that has been used for on/off switching to i...

Distinguished Talk 05: ADC Performance Limits - The Fundamentals by prof. Dr. Marcel Pelgrom (TU Delft). Abstract: Any performance metric for analog-to-digital converters contains at least the parameters: power, effective resolution and bandwidth. Finding the right balance for a given application between these parameters is the main task of the ADC designer. Ultimately the boundaries on ADC per...

Distinguished Talk 04: Optical receivers in CMOS by prof. Dr. Filip Tavernier (KU Leuven). Abstract: Optical communication has many advantages compared to copper and wireless systems. However, the conversion from the optical to the electrical domain in the receiver typically requires an external photodiode which adds bulk and cost to the system. This talk will therefore discuss the possibility ...

Western Colleges and Universities are filled with Freemasons, Socialists, Marxists and Communists. Look at Hollywood. Now look at any campus today. The programming is complete.
