The Best Piece for Learning Multitasking at the Piano
One of the tricks of the trade is "multitasking".
This short piece by Hugo Reinhold is a great way to develop that skill.
It's from his Opus 39 "Miniaturbilder" No. 2.

Measure by Measure - Situated Piano Learning
WHO. ARE. YOU!?? I’ve been playing piano so long. But recently starting playing to a click. I want to be near perfect in time. So I’m going to start counting to practice more precision.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes. Heart-touchingly played.
You inspired me to make myself count! Just because of the fun and convincing way your eyes laugh, it is lovely to see you having fun teaching and playing
If this is the fastest you can play it, it's fine for getting comfortable performing it, but ultimately it's most ideal to play it 20-30 bpm faster before you consider it mastered. Take it from someone who uploaded THREE performances on Rondo Alla Turca to their YT channel with the third being the most consistent and up to speed as required. (Also I know you're probably a professional so I'm not trying to knock, insult, or disrespect you. I just wanted to share my advice based on my experience as a player who's put in the work that rewarded me by getting me where I want to be.)
Challenge accepted, merci. You called it stuttering, I call it hiccups, or hiccoughs. I want to quit that and play better.
One of my first pieces learned, learning how to play piano. Love it.
Absolutely love it. Beautifully played!
At what point in your practice do you allow for rubato - the pushing and pulling of time?
Absolutely beautiful ❤❤😊
Great information, thanks!
Loved that
One of the very best piano teachers!!
Wonderful mate!
Why do people like to say 1-oh-let, 2-oh-let or trip-oh-let? The word triplet is only 2 syllables. Why add a 3rd syllable? Doesn't it make more sense to just say 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, etc.? Great video by the way.
Oh thanks, I never put together that "oh-let" was trying to say "trip-oh-let" haha. That is annoying. But whatever syllables you choose will work. You'd have to be a fanatic Kodaly Method teacher to insist there's a difference between any syllable ... it's just whatever you prefer. I'd insist that numbers for keeping track of things in the measure are superior to "tah tah titi tah" but there's an argument for both.
Your hands are huge
Really nice. I want to learn this. :-)
Beautiful playing! But...why on earth would you use finger 3 on that b? Why not just finger 4 and avoid that awkward stretch down to the f sharp?
4 is totally reasonable and your point makes sense. I just like 3rd finger because it's stronger and feels easier to control, especially on an important melodic note. But that doesn't make it right or wrong.
Sounds like Ave Maria to me. I had a piano teacher once who would sing this as I played it, all while parading around the room in grand gesture. That was 40 years ago, and I should learn it better this time around. 😂 brings back a wonderful memory for me. 🥰
I'm glad it's associated with good memories for you. This is the one piece I think every pianist should learn no matter what.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 is this what we’re learning next! I can’t wait❤
Yes! It's available in your Measure by Measure account. Thanks for commenting 😋. Happy practicing.
Nice and lively. I'm loving working on the Bach Prelude.
You are the first TH-cam teacher I've seen champion this as strongly as my coach, Phil Best. It took him four years to help me overcome my embarrassment at chanting his rhythm syllables and stop listening to the result the way we enjoy listening to a recording. The result is in the past! You are so right about how this sharpens our focus. You even mentioned flexibility! When chanting we have 'expressive intention' in every subdivision of every beat, felt deep in our body, driving our fingers. Rhythm first. YES.
you make it look so easy, I is NOT
Crucial advice. I do it.... but I have to slow down... it generates musical context. And then you can add singing.!
So glad to find you here Randy! Amazing video with top notch production!
So glad to have such a helpful advice. Thank you, be well.
Hi thanks, I am trying to order the course but when i click on paypal it just keeps circling and nothing happens.
Thanks for reaching out about that. Which course are you trying to order? Please send me an email so I know what email address is associated with your order. Thanks!
👍🏼can’t wait to learn this. Will it be in Feb. packet?
Yup! And the other two movements too!
I am excited you have made counting out loud at the piano so important. I have been studying for awhile, and wondered why my playing didn't improve much. I got the notes right and other thing right, but rhythm was always a struggle and the music just fell apart because I didn't get the understanding or practice counting well. But, now you have explained and highly recommended counting out loud. I can't wait to get started with the exercises. As Duke use to say, it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. Thank you, Edward
Glad to hear it! Keep it up for a couple week and you'll be a whole new person 😄.
I agree, it reveals the cold hard truth about your practice sessions. Better to face the truth in the beginning and up your practice session, than to ignore it.
What Happened to my Account 😮
Hey thanks for reaching out! Please see the email I just sent.
I couldn’t agree more! My piano lessons were 38 years ago with an old mean (non-English speaking) Cuban woman who would dig her nails into my fingers if I hit the wrong note, so playing the piano frightened me even more-so. I continued studying into my teen years and somehow became more comfortable. I am 46 now and today is the first time I have seen the staff turned sideways. I wish I would have seen this decades ago! I wish I would have had a teacher like you. 😊
