I’m loving this, but, ouch…! A vernier is not a marking gauge….
Mr.Stapletons design is very practical.
What size and where did you get the springs? Thanks for the video!
Do you have any info for those final pieces you put on that you attached the springs to? I did t see those anywhere in the 4 parts.
Hi Mr. Stapleton . Is it a Dreadnaught?
Hi, that was a Grand Performance body size.
Thanks.
Great video. Thank you.
Stapleton Guitars: I like the simple design you came up with. Was a thermometer of some sort not necessary or was the temperature control on the blanket sufficient? Did heat up take about 15 minutes before bending?
The whole process of bending one side takes around eight minutes or so, and you need to cool it down after to avoid the spring back effect. The temperature control on the blanket is sufficient enough to rely on it.
Thanks for sending this.
Gonna guess you built this for about $125.00.!❤
Sorry, I can't give you the exact number, I just didn't count it, but I think you probably right.
Definitely less than the $2k stewmac wants for the same thing haha.
Great build! Is this side bender based on The one made by William Peterson building the guitar sides a book available on Amazon?
Hi Tom, thanks. Unfortunately I didn't know about this book, so I've made it from scratch.
Thank you for making this cool video and the cool music as well!
Hi Tom, I'm glad that you like it, and thank you for your kind words.
I'm gonna make one ❤ thanks for the inspiration!
@@tomalexiou9573 Good luck, and let me know if you'll have any questions.
Thank you Mr. Stapleton!
Hello Stapleton Guitars. Can this be modified for a cutaway? Thank you great straight forward video!
It can be modified for a cutaway, you need to make the new template with a cutaway, and add the new press for it. Here is an example: th-cam.com/video/1wW0SRW6qR8/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for answering me.If I want to get a CNC machine what's the bare minimum size for guitar making? 36 by 36 or 48 by 48? Do you think I can get a CNC for less than $1000.00 Canadian dollars?
@@tomalexiou9573 The working area of my CNC is 600 x 1200mm. I've build it specifically for my needs, and it cost me way less than 1000 CAD.
@@StapletonGuitars Thank you for taking the time to answer me Mr. Stapleton Guitars.
Awesome video
Do this way of bending avoid some of the distortion caused by the grain/figure on the wood? Thanks for the video
Nice music!
Hi just dropping by again to say I am loving this guitar. It is such a pleasure to own and play. Thanks again!!!!
Thank you for sharing this build with us!
You're very welcome. I'm glad that you like it.
Why did you make the mould with the internal section rather than the opposite with the guitar shape cut out of the middle and solid wood around the wood to be moulded? That seems to be the way ive seen everyone else do it or do you think ut matters at all?
Looks very similar to how I did it but I broke the cutwaway side in three places right around the tightest bend. Any ideas as to what could do that?
Great and what's next??😢
Here is a full the video th-cam.com/video/-TxeQk-DC6g/w-d-xo.html
This is great; nice job. I’m going to try making one. What size springs are those? Thanks!
Thank you. The spring size is 166 x 19.1mm
@@StapletonGuitars thanks!! Great channel...
Thank you@@rcote1234 . I've got several workshop videos on the way, so stay tuned :)
I built my first dreadnaught last year. Used a pipe style iron for side bending. Too nerve wracking. Starting an OM build this year. I’ve got the mold built, and will build (your) side bender next.
@@rcote1234 It's a really time-consuming process to bend sides with an iron. Good luck with building you new side bender, it's not that complicated & much more efficient to use. I've got six body shapes in my range so I've built six different side benders :)
Dear luthier, I really need to thank you for these videos. I still bend sides in an old fashion way. Surely, now I will ameliorate my way of folding sides.
Thank you. This is exactly why I've made these videos, to make luthiers' life easier. :)
could you tell me the spring dimensions you use (the springs that hook on the sides)
Sure, the spring size 166 x 19.1mm
hmm, a rolling pin attached to the springs comes to mind... just givin'r the steam roller effect 🤔
Is there any video to make cutaway side clamping
Probably, google it
What is the process of actually designing and drawing out a custom shape? I see a lot of pre existing designs being made into molds but where is the blueprint for coming up with your own shape? What is the geometric equation involved??? I can’t seem to find any info
This is a very interesting question, and here is my answer, there is no blueprint for the body shapes. Early days dozens of the body shapes was created, and just several have settled. The couple things I could recommend: work within the dimensions, and understand how upper bout, lover bout, waist and depth of the body affect the sound. Also, you could create your own body shape of cause.
Is there any drawings available for measurements
Hi, yes there is the dimensions in the video. Sorry no drawings. Cheers
Greetings. I ask you to please answer a question. Between what resistance values of a strat pickup is the standard to replicate a 50s sound, considering using alnico 5 and heavy formvar 42awg wire?. And to get the mid frequencies a bit scooped, what resistance would be ideal for the neck position?. Thank you very much for answering.
I love your musicianship, sense of rhythm and the tunes you dream up for these videos. Nice guitar too.
Thank you 😊
How to make an acoustic guitar side bender. Step one: buy a CNC machine 🤣
In the description how to make a template: "The main template could be cut by hand or using a CNC machine, but it has to be precise and accurate" 😂
Too bad you can’t bend sides with a CNC machine…
Don’t get me wrong. If I ever own a CNC machine I will be building the whole guitar with it 👍
You can actually, some guitar factories have automated side benders, the only thing you need to do is to prepare the wood properly. I would love to have one of those. Accuracy and time saving are the key factors here.@@simonguitarfunkel
@@simonguitarfunkel I wouldn't. Yes you can use CNC for some operations, but you need to feel the wood. Every single piece of the wood has different tonal characteristics, and quality is different too. And when we're talking about sound board voicing, not CNC aloved here at all.
I have had this guitar at home for 6 days, beautiful build, tone and playability . I love the understated look as well. I own two Standard Martin Dreadnoughts and this Bertha does it for me with its unique voice equally and more in its inimitable way. Superb instrument.
Thank you Te Umu for your kind feedback. I'm happy that you like the guitar.
Sounds beautiful like all of your guitars.
Can I ask a silly question? Why didn’t you just cut all those curved pieces out on the CNC?
You could have added alignment holes with the CNC in it’s program.
The short answer is to reduce plywood wastage. My CNC has 400mm width so in this case I would have to prepare plywood sheets in the size of the CNC working area. But on the big plywood sheet that I had - I could just position the template at any angle, and as close to each other as possible. Another thing, when you are putting together nine CNC cut layers, you have to align them precisely; whereas if you're using just one template then aligning will be done by the router bit for you. I hope it makes sense.
Thank you for these videos. Could I ask you what kind of steel you are using, and how thick it is?
I use stainless steel plates 0.5mm thick, and 150mm wide.
@@StapletonGuitars Many thanks
great job with all the videos for building this bender, may I ask where to acquire the heating element you are using to support the bend?
Thank you. You make some seriously beautiful guitars and they sound terrific as well.
Thank you Te for your kind words.
this is a single coil with the resistance of a humbucker
The resistance of this high output bridge pickup is 11.8 kilo Ohm, and it's higher than resistance of the "normal" humbucker but lower than high output humbucker pickup. Cheers.

I'm listening thru some top end Senheiser headphones and this sounds so nice, open, airy and it has that Kiwi vibe... kinda like the sonic version of the crisp 'seaweed and salt' breeze while surfcasting on the beach at BayView, listening to the rocks 'grainy overdrive' as they knock together in the surf. This tone, in my humble opinion, has vibes of early Split Enz/Hello Sailor/Swingers ... I would guess that the bridge pickup driven hard could get a good early British punk grit to it.... As someone with serious G.A.S. I have a Ibanez AS53 Hollow Body Electric that plays well acoustically but is a bit 'meh' or flat plugged in. Even with new strings. Obviously the sound on this clip is a combination of ALL your instrument, woods/strings/pot choice/wiring/lead/amp/effects... etc; not just the pickups, but do you think whatever set of yours that you have put in this guitar would bring my Ibanez to life? Keen to hear your thoughts. Im the guy with the Gretsch upgrade project and my new bass build I questioned you about on TradeMe. Also a designer by trade designing, spec'ing, building and installing for my clients all and pretty much everything that everyone else says no to. From a 8m replica of the Eifell Tower as a digitally printed truck-tarp tent for Renault NZ, bespoke structural signage, visual displays and branding, to a Beatles themed set of rubbbish bins for a nice lady in Taupo. And a wild selection in between. I'm challenged every day and my job is to break the norm and deliver unconventional solutions. In Stapleton I see a kindred spirit so, as a Muso also, I am keen to check out the wares... after some good advice of course.
Hi Chris, you've got such an interesting job, awesome projects 🙂 Thanks for your kind words! I loved your description of the sound, such a great vibe it is, happy that people like how my pickups are made. On this video I use high output pickups with Alnico 5 & Alnico 2. But I'm afraid it could be too much for the hollow body so I would suggest to go with the medium output humbuckers with Alnico 5 in neck and Alnico 2 in bridge positions. Here is the link to this set: www.stapletonguitars.com/collections/medium-output-humbucker-pickups/products/medium-output-handmade-split-coil-humbucker-pickup-set Also you could get great sound with low output set too - especially with some overdrive. Link: www.stapletonguitars.com/collections/low-output-humbucker-pickups/products/low-output-handmade-split-coil-humbucker-pickup-set Cheers, Roman
Hey. After hearing this, and being rightly impressed (I've looked at your stable of pickups online) which of your pickup sets would you suggest for upgrading a 2007 Gretsch Electromatic Jet-Pro. Hard question I know but here's some background.... It's a HEAVY, 100% solid mahogany body with a set neck, also mahogany, that I picked up in Cash Convertors Rotorua. What hooked me was it's unplugged tone and remarkable sustain. Just the natural sound was rich and heavy and it just kept ringing...... The stock pickups do not, in my opinion, do justice to that acoustic promise. The unplugged acoustic tone is deeper than I would have expected and has a real nice 'something' in the upper midrange that promises a good 'snarl and bite'. I'm no heavy metaller or rock pounder, my dream sound is something I describe as a 'Hot Clean' with a luscious creamy-smooth sustain..... My style is somewhat of a psychadelic Prog Rock/Blues/Jazz-funk Hybrid... Anyway, that's where I weant to take this guitar. I play thru a superb Supro Delta King 12 and rely on dynamics and 'touch' to get my core tone. After which the different 'colours' from my pedal board shape it further. But the seed-tone has to be right first. As a Taupo Lad keen to fly the 'Made in NZ' Flag where possible, I'm keen to jump on the bandwagon. I've subscribed of course....
Hi Chris, thanks for your interest. For this guitar, I would suggest to get high output humbucker set with Alnico 5 magnets for both neck & bridge positions - this would give life to the heavy tonewood, more on the Prog-rock side. For slightly warmer tone, I would suggest the same set but with Alnico 2 magnets (in both positions). But please check the dimensions of the pickups - to ensure they fit your guitar. Here's the link to this set - www.stapletonguitars.com/collections/high-output-humbucker-pickups/products/hot-reverse-zebra-humbucker-pickup-set-alnico-5-alnico-2 Btw I can make the pickups with open nickel cover with wooden insert (different woods available) - this would be more in Gretsch style. I don't have this on the website now but I have covers in my workshop. Cheers, Roman
