GREAT GOLF SWING TIPS: Maintain A Straight Left Arm
Maintaining a straight left arm in your backswing is essential, especially if you want a consistent and powerful golf swing. There are three main reasons why a golfer's left arm will bend or fold during their backswing. This bending or folding of the left arm can cause many poor golf shots and here, golf coach Ian Sadler talks about the three main remedies and how you can fix them.
Reason 1. The left hand grip is not holding the golf club properly. The left hand should have the club running more across the hand, not running through the hand and upwards through the lead arm.
Reason 2. Lack of shoulder turn. If you're gripping the golf correctly then the next problem to look out for will be a lack of upper body turn during your backswing. If the upper body fails to rotate and remains stationary then this will force the left arm to bend as you swing further to the top of your backswing.
Reason 3. Tight trail arm (right arm for a right handed golfer). Sometimes during the backswing, golfers tend to pull the right arm in too tight to the body, this will leave no room to accommodate a straight left arm and will cause it to naturally fold or bend.

    If you were to swing normally with the intention of letting go of the club so that it would fly as far as possible then at what point in your follow through would you let go of the club and in what direction would it travel?

      Hello Andy and what a great question. I would let go straight after contacting the ball and it would go quite a long way left. Why do you ask?

      @@IanSadlerGolf Many thanks for answering. I recently became interested in ' sole intention' (which is apparently how the brain responds best to instructions) and how it relates to the golf swing. On the course, a sole intention to hit the ball at a target has helped my game a lot and I'm now thinking about sole intentions that might improve the mechanics of my swing. I shall try this one on the range - hopefully without actually letting go of the club! Thanks again. PS could you be more specific about the angle at which the club would fly, say from the target line? Also it sounds as though it wouldn't fly very high?

      @IanSadlerGolf 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello Barry and thanks for taking the time to post your comment. It's not a bad thought, certainly if it works for you. Lets say we're hitting a driver and the ball position is forwards maybe opposite the instep of our left foot. The maximum shaft lean you can achieve is naturally reduced because of where the ball is positioned in our stance. The key to this methodology is to achieve maximum shaft lean, maximum downward striking, all without moving our head. Sorry if that was a bit long winded. • @IanSadlerGolf
      @IanSadlerGolf 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Mike and thanks very much for taking the time to post your comment. The simple answer is YES. When you hit the driver the ball position will be much further forwards in your stance. So the shaft lean at the impact position will naturally be reduced (provided your head stays still) you are still trying to achieve the same position as I demonstrated in the video, but it's effectively more impossible to over do it. I hope this helps. Please subscribe to my channel, if you haven't already. Regards Ian.

    Hey Ian, great video on the release. Quick question: I'm left arm dominant, but play right handed, I've always been confused by what the left hand/wrist should be doing in relation to the right hand/wrist. It seems to me my power comes from the left wrist release and the right wrist is passive, going along for the ride, in fact it seems like my right hand/wrist get in the way, so my question is, how does the right hand/wrist help generate more swing speed exactly?

    • @IanSadlerGolf
      @IanSadlerGolf หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi William and thanks for taking the time to comment on my video. Provided you're making a reasonable turn with your bigger muscles, then both wrists should play an equal role during the release of the golf club. One of the key movements with the right hand/wrist is the feeling that its releasing in a more under arm way. I see many golfers trying to roll their wrists during the downswing, which tends to be performed more with a dominant right hand. Try to train the right hand to release a little earlier but not by rolling out and over, but under through impact. The hands and wrists will naturally want to roll and rotate along with the rotational movement of the bigger muscles. I hope this helps, if not message me again and I'll try to explain it in a different way. Regards Ian.

    • @williamgeorgen529

      @@IanSadlerGolf Thank-you Ian for being so responsive! I've just discovered your videos and love them! You are exactly correct, my current golf instructor wants to me to "roll over" the hands with the right hand coming over the left hand, but I found that extremely difficult to execute. So you're saying have the right hand/wrist come in more "under arm through impact, and then allow the right hand to roll over the left hand after impact, yes/no? Good point of the bigger muscles, and I'm assuming you're talking about the shoulder rotation which would seemingly allow the right arm to keep up with the left arm. Another interesting observation for you to consider (and you've demonstrated in your videos), is when I swing left arm only, my left hand/wrist releases or rolls over naturally into a solid finish, but when I introduce the right hand, it seems like the right hand impedes the swing speed, thus my dilemma. I have heard the right arm/hand should feel like an underarm throw, but it just doesn't feel comfortable to me when I try it, and I'm uncertain how that would aid clubhead speed unless the right hand is pushing against the shaft. I might give it another try. Sorry for this lengthy follow up, but the issue of the release has always been a hazy one for me. Thanks Again!

      Hi Ilan. Thanks for taking the time to leave your comment. Apologies if I left out some meaningful content. The emphasis here was on guarding against attacking the ball too much from the inside path, which I've also been guilty of over the years. In essence, what I'm trying to get across is to be open minded on the 'out to in' swing path. Provided you have decent rotation with your big muscles then it's almost impossible to swing over the top, which most of us are reluctant to try because its a real taboo. So, practice trying to hit a slight pull fade shot and see if you achieve better ball striking. I hope this has been a little bit more helpful. If not, then message me again and I'll try again. Please consider subscribing to my channel if you haven't already. Regards Ian.

      Hi Sunil. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. The through swing is really dictated by the angle you have approached the ball from. If you attack the ball too much from the inside, it will naturally slow the rotation of your hip turn through impact causing an early extension of the club which causes a multitude of errant and wayward golf shots. On the other hand, if you were to attack the ball from a slightly 'out to in' path, then this would force your lower body to clear out of the way, providing more room for your follow through to swing round and up to your finish. Remember, the idea of this video is to practice against the severe 'in to out' swing path as this is far more destructive. In essence, your follow through will mirror what you did in your backswing. I hope I've explained this okay for you. If not, let me know and I'll try it a different way. Regards Ian.
