Welcome to my TH-cam channel. I mostly upload videos of mechanical music machines, such as my player piano, but I will occasionally upload videos of unrelated/loosely related things.
I am a pipe organist, pianist, and trumpet player. My player piano is a 1929 R.S. Williams Plaola player piano, made in Oshawa, ON, not far from where I live. It is in excellent condition, and plays very well. I also own a Baldwin C630-T electronic organ (converted to MIDI in 2020), and a Jupiter trumpet.
If you notice any errors in my video descriptions (i.e. song titles), please let me know. Thank you for visiting my channel!

Pride Flag Theft
Obviously, this is very different from the content I usually post, but I was just shocked when I woke up to this.
A person trespassed, broke, and stole a small Pride flag (Canadian version) off my car in the early morning hours on Monday. I have since replaced the flag, but this is pretty pathetic.
If a small pride flag on a car, literally parked behind another car, is enough to send you into a fit of rage, seek help.

Niagara Parks Power Station - Tunnel Elevator Ride
มุมมอง 141ปีที่แล้ว
I am an industrial electrician apprentice by trade, so when I heard that the old Rankine Power Plant, which supplied 25Hz power all the way until 2006 (!!!), had reopened as a museum, I knew I had to go! Definitely worth a visit! In this video, the elevator ascends from the water outlet tunnel up to the power-house.

Finally, after several months, I am uploading these! This is the Lakeside Park Carousel on May 23, 2022, shot with my DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel T8i). I tried to capture the organ's sound from a bit of a distance in this video. The songs are "Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-De-Ay" and "The Sidewalks Of New York" from Tom Meijer's roll 14509 ("Good Old USA Carousel Music #1").

This is a re-upload of the 2016 QRS Christmas roll played by Sierzchula, Berkmer & Jones. The songs are "Last Christmas", and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" using my new setup. Unfortunately, I was unable to get any new Christmas rolls this year, so all I have is stuff I've already posted. Thanks for watching/listening and have a happy holiday season!

This is a re-upload of the 2015 QRS Christmas illustrated collector's roll (XMAS-2015) using my DSLR and my new Rode VideoMicro microphone (mounted on the camera). I reverted back to 1080p 60FPS for this video, and the result was much better than the 60FPS videos shot on my phones (including my Galaxy S20 ). The mic sounds pretty good, and makes it sound more like what I'm actually hearing in t...
Player Piano: "Prelude & Theme From The Godfather"

This video features QRS Celebrity Roll CEL-111 played by Liberace. It is a combination of Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Prelude In C Sharp Minor", and Nino Rota's "Godfather" theme. I tried a new setup for this video using my Canon DSLR and a tripod. This allows me to show the roll and the keys. I would like to get an external microphone that can mount to the camera's hot shoe in the future to improve...

Thank you for the instructions
How do you remove the two wooden front covers so you can get to the mechanism in the first place?
That looks so cool!
Does anyone happen to know if some of these types of player pianos were ever refitted later on to also run on electricity, rather than manually pumping the foot pedals? Back when I was a little kid in the '70s, our house had one, and I remember sitting on the bench, pumping the pedals to listen to the songs, but I also have vague memories of it being able to be set up to run on its own, without having to have someone physically operating the pedals. Am I correct, or is my memory just playing tricks on me?
Cool
I got a question how old is this player piano and what year is it?
Thanks a lot for this!
cannot believe how wonderful this machine is i used to like wind up gramerphones as a kid this machine came before what led on to be junkboxes
magic a different world long gone but very exciting and inspiring love the sounds this machine makes even if a bit out of tune they are like strange living beings doing more to us than just playing a tune and giving us a ride they could be spell casters
I love this song

Is there a difference between piano brands vs rolls? Are the rolls interchangeable?
This should be our state song!
I think it sounds great

Thank you. I’ve been trying to get my grandmothers Steoeber working properly. This video answered several questions
Where did you find this piano Chris? I live in Oshawa and know some of the history of Williams and Sons Piano Works. My niece Jessica was thrilled when she discovered a Williams piano in a ghost town in Northern British Columbia.
This is incredible, such an amazing machine. So cool
Ingenious. I often wondered how those tiny little holes played the notes. Thanks for the explanation
Yeah now I see where pinball machines came from
Love this one as well. Terrific. 🤎
That's one of my favourite Andrews Sisters tunes... Louis Prima and Keely Smith also did a great rendition.

How do the holes in the paper communicate the inner dynamics of the song? Do you know? I definitely hear dynamics in these pianola songs... so amazing...

Hopefully you'll get a recut roll.
When I was little, my grandparents had a player piano and the very same QRS roll at their house (among others). It was my first exposure to Autumn Leaves (even before hearing the famous Nat King Cole version). We used to always take it out on holidays / family get togethers. Almost 30 years later, my grandpa has passed, my grandma sold the house, and the family get togethers don't happen anymore, but I inherited the piano and the rolls. It doesn't work (one of the parts needs replacing), so being able to hear this really takes me back! Thank you for posting!
I love this Piano

I have been lucky enough to go on this a few times Always so fun, and amazing it looks so good for it's age
thank you for sharing such an in-depth tour of your piano. I’m really interested in pneumatics and this also inspires my passion in music. the fact that we can combine them is truly fascinating.
I have had this happen once or twice with Duo-Art rolls. Apparently there was at least a short period of time when they did not use acid free paper and after many decades it become extremely brittle.
I don't think "acid free" was on the radar of the paper industry back then. The paper we have that lasted, we got lucky with. Inexpensive papers tended to be less durable, but it took many decades for paper producers to really understand what was going on with long-term chemical effects. I've seen 17th century rag paper from printed books that is amazingly white and spry for its age, so it's not just a factor of time. The usual culprits (rosin and/or alum) as sizings were more common in cheap paper, 19th and early 20th century, mostly to reduce ink absorption. Because the music roll industry was more concerned about expansion/shrinkage of the paper with changing humidity (not saving money on printing costs), they focused on that, and their paper wasn't usually poor quality. Wax treatment was common. American Piano was more "showy" about their company methods, and I recall a photo of a humidity test rig that made it out into some of their publicity material. But the industry as a whole was concerned about this, as overly moisture-sensitive paper would make rolls unplayable seasonally. I don't think music roll paper had the "typical" chemistry (like newsprint) that tends to self-destruct as badly - even cheap rolls - as a totally unreliable product wouldn't sell well. I have some unusually heavily-"foxed" and brittle Duo-Arts like you describe. It's sporadic (I have same roll # in "good" and "brittle" copies) - I don't think a lot of the pop tunes were punched more than once, so they seem to have been made at the same time. British production Duo-Art rolls have been generally better in terms of paper stability. Most Ampico stuff, even late production, is fairly decent. I think storage conditions, more than anything else, have made the difference. The *worst* US-production paper I have ever seen is from 1942-1945, because of War Production strictures. I have printings of the same book, 2 years apart (1 from 1941, 1 from 1943) that are like night and day. Earlier copy is bright white, gloss paper, no issues. Later copy is deep tan, brittle, almost unreadable. I don't own any 88-note rolls from this period, but I'd bet they're probably the least stable.
Thanks for the informative reply. I had not thought about the moisture controll issue. And a quick search disclosed the following: "The company Hercules Incorporated developed the first alkaline sizing in the 1950s that made acid-free paper possible." And to be fair, they probably never imagined that people would want to play their rolls almost a century later. The lesson for me is to get new high quality recuts when you can.@@joelfenner
@@FloridaClay I agree that recuts are more durable. Accurate copy quality can be quite variable, depending on how it was done. I really miss Precision Music Roll - they did some fantastic work. But the old paper can still be very usable. Depends on what condition you get it in, and what producer made it. We also got really lucky with shellac records. This was another thing "not intended" to last, but by pure happenstance has turned out to be pretty darn stable over the last 100+ years. It's not perfect, but the amount of decay that has happened is almost unnoticeable. Contrast with nitrate film stock, of which very little 1920s/1930s material remains. We have Vitaphone sound-on-disc projects from 1927 onwards where complete sets of discs survive for quite a few films, but no surviving film print is known to exist. You can "hear" the whole movie, but see none of it. That's a pretty clear case where nobody really knew what was going to last and what wasn't.
Hi Chris…My upright is from 1913 with a loud, bass and treble levers. Do the rolls tell when to use these levers or did the piano player back in the day simply adjust these levers by ear? Also, when you have these player pianos tuned, does something have to be removed? If so, what? Thanks!
I have this exact piano which has been completely restored to original specs. I always wondered how it worked. THANK YOU - This was fantastic!

Thank God (or perhaps Michael Faraday) for electricity.
Imagine walking in to a saloon in the winter and you hear this
Fantastically complicated. I wonder who invented it. By the way, this poor gentleman is trying his best to explain how it works. God bless his efforts.

Yay, Oshawa! 🇨🇦
I'm pretty sure a witch came up with this idea
Most people from back then would look at our modern electronics and think it's witchcraft.
Thanks for the great walkthrough. I love mechanical devices and always have. A piano is complicated to start with, and it's amazing how all the player parts are fitted and working reliably.
