Greetings You Tubers! Welcome aboard, Captain Al here.
Strap in as we take some of the mystery out of flying and aviation. Consider this a resource for informational ground and flight training for flight simmers, aviation enthusiasts, and yes, even real pilots.
Why tune in? I have over 44 years in the aviation industry and over 32,000 hours total time as a general aviation pilot, corporate pilot, airline pilot, airline instructor pilot, and FAA Examiner. I will stick to what I know best in producing Training Tips. Training Tips are short, concise video briefings designed to inform, educate, and entertain anyone interested in the big, "heavy iron" jets.
The realism in today's flight simulator software platforms and aircraft add-ons is truly remarkable and just as complex as the real thing. Let's head up front to the flight deck and get started peeling away the complexity of the modern jet aircraft.

How do i get the pc flight simulator
Wanted to make sure I understand the slip / skid
Hello Capt Al - Greatly appreciate these videos, extremely helpful, thank you. Question : @ 43:40 - FuelControl -1 switch brought to cutoff to show Hyd Demand Pump 1 switch over automatically from EDP. However, my understanding DP1 and 4 are air driven (DP2&3 electric), is DP1 able to switch over and provide hyd press while engine 1 is windmilling down and then you would switch to Aux to provide hyd electrically? I'm not clear where the air is coming from to provide pressure since FC-1 switch went to cutoff. Again - Thank You for these concise and informative videos, greatly appreciated.
Hi Captain, delighted to see you coming back, wishing you all the best.
Hi Mish, hope you and your family are doing well. I figured I would do some of these Shorts to get me back making content, even though it is existing content condensed to 1 minute. Trying to think of what I want to do next as far as original content. Nice hearing from you again, you are the only graduate of the course...
@@subsonicflighttraining Thanks so much Captain,I hope you and your family are well too ,i'm so proud to be a good student, you are a great instructor , I'll be always loyal to the channel where i learned a lot , keep going and I'm tuning for new short ,have a wonderful day .
Well done Capt - tremendously informative. Question at 15:00 - you execute the new route J70 to Bluit, as you turn to intercept - lets say ATC cancels this request and asks that you return to the previous plan, now re-cleared back Direct Beezr, rest of initial route unchanged. Is there a simple way to get back to the original route? Seems I recall selecting RTE COPY when modifying just in case this happens? Thanks again, truly appreciate your incredibly educational tutorials.
Thank you so much! Yes, exactly. Prior to making the modification you could go to RTE page 1 and Select RTE COPY and the existing Route will go into RTE 2, for example, if the Active Route is RTE 1. Then, if ATC says forget that, go back to your original routing, you can go to RTE 2, Activate, Execute, and then do what ATC wants you to do, like go present position direct BEEZR...
You make it look to easy👍
Thank you so much. Steep Turns I think are actually harder on a desktop than the real simulator...
Your videos are incredible. As a check airman and sim instructor, I always recommend your videos as “extra reading”, particularly the auto flight ones.
Thank you so much. That means a lot coming from a fellow instructor/check airmen. Even though my channel is meant for flight simmers, I get a lot of real world pilots watching them as well...
Why predicted altitude is lower than the next waypoint altitude?
After the jet makes the 940 feet on a heading of 344, it will go to DODVE on the 344 course, predicted by the FMC to cross at 1630 feet, then the 342 course to WUREL to cross at or above...
I'm just retiring from the 747 at Atlas and have been simming forever. I have PSX as well as the PMDG 747 in P3D. I'd be interesting in picking your brain to help me get PSX set up on my home system. -David R.
Congratulations on retirement! I trained and checked a lot of Atlas pilots in the mid-90’s, before you guys had a simulator. Let me know if I can help. If not me, I had many flight simmers in my class that knew Aerowinx and computer issues better than I do. I can put you in touch through my discord…
@@subsonicflighttraining thank you, I would appreciate it!
I miss the live lessons
Do you really Ed? I always thought I made too many mistakes live like not switching views to go to the QRH. It was challenging doing it live with all the juggling between flight deck, approach charts, QRH, no First Officer, etc…
@@subsonicflighttraining I understood that it was a challenge. What I learned helped me enjoy the sim on another level.
@@edwardarruda7215 Thanks Ed, glad to get that feedback. That was my goal, exactly what you said...
This is Aerowinx PSX, which I think is the best modeling of the 747. Other good ones are PMDG 747 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.
So it won’t let it get into the red(overspeed) regardless of speed selected in the box
Yes, correct, if the Autothrottle was off and the power was as is, it would overspeed. The Autothrottle is controlling speed in Level Flight as long as it is engaged...
what game is this
Aerowinx PSX B747-400
Thank you so much for sharing. I hope that more lessons will follow 👍.
More to come! Thank you @jan6793...
For Trim……__units, 0, 0 what operation should be done on plane?
The trim comes from the final weight and balance in %MAC (Mean Aerodynamic Chord) so if your final CG was 24.6% MAC, you would input 25% on the TAKEOFF REF page (round up) and the FMC will compute the units of trim to set via the trim switches on the control column referencing the trim indicator just to the left and right of the Thrust Quadrant. The CG will come from the sim flight plan or final weight paperwork in the jet. If you are not sure, just use 25% and make sure you are in the green band for takeoff...
PSX, nice! How do you like it so far, especially compared to PMDG and the real iron in terms of flight model, systems, sounds etc.?
I have dropped Prepar3D, so my PMDG planes went with it. I have moved to MSFS and hope PMDG will make a 747 for the new Microsoft Platform. PSX is the most accurate in terms of model fidelity in normals and non-normals for the 747. PMDG and MSFS is better in terms of the visual aspect. So, I would use PSX in more of a procedures trainer role and PMDG/MSFS in more of a visual entertainment experience. Nothing compares to the advanced simulators/jet since you have real aerodynamic forces and real control column forces at work, not to mention real views from above terra firma...
@@subsonicflighttraining Some even claim that MSFS graphics outdo reallife😂😅 But landing in PSX with a realistic throttle and yoke (the expensive ones with elevator-feel) doesn't mean you can land a real 747
P/P320 gyration was a clearing turn ;-)
Yes, it gyrated quite a bit, you will see that if you intercept a Localizer at angles greater than 30 degrees as well. If I was flying for real, I probably would have gone to HDG SEL or HDG HOLD until passing the Waypoint if it started to make a turn like that...
Great series Captain Al, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for finding some value in my videos. TH-cam is asking me to make more content, is there anything you would like to see in particular, if so let me know...
Thanks for sharing these videos, Im learning a lot.👍
Glad to hear it!
Greetings Capt Al, as a 747-400/8F Pilot and Sim instructor, let me say I really enjoy you videos! For myself and for my students. Have you made or could you make a video on Autoland Approaches with failures above and below alert height? Showing change from LAND 3 to LAND 2 and NO AUTOLAND, as well as, loss of LOC and G/S signals. We don’t always have the time to do many of these in the sim and I feel we could benefit by a video along with commentary and instruction from yourself. Thanks in advance! D
Thank you for the kind words. That would make a good video. I will note that as a video to make when I start producing again.
@@subsonicflighttraining Very good. Thank you for keeping the greatest airplane alive.
What software is being used to show these CDU exercises please?
These CDU exercises are from PMDG 747 software which at that time was run on P3D v4
Great video! One question: Why are crossfeeds 1&4 closed? Boost pumps 2&3 can't override the pumps in 1&4... Thx in advance!
Thank you! I assume you are referring to tank to engine configuration. Override 2&3 pumps have 2 times the output pressure of Main Tank Pumps 1, 2, 3, and 4. So when you have all pumps ON and all cross feeds open, override/jettison pumps 2 provide fuel to engines 1&2, and override/jettison pumps 3 provide fuel to tanks 3&4. When we go tank to engine we turn off 2&3 override pumps and we close cross feeds 1&4 to ensure that main tanks feed their respective engines for the rest of the flight as all tanks are relatively equal at that point.
@@subsonicflighttraining Thx! But why are the crossfeeds of 1&4 closed, if they're left open it would still be tank to engine. As boost pumps 2&3 can't override boostpumps 1&4 (unlike the override pumps which are turned off for tank to engine config).
Yes, that’s true, but there can be differences in pump pressures between the main pumps, so to ensure the differences are somewhat isolated, cross feeds 1&4 are closed, so that main tank pumps 1&4 feed engines 1&4 respectively and are truly tank to engine and main tanks 2&3 feed their respective engines and keep the cross bleed manifold pressurized. This way if there are small differences, they would show up as a small lateral imbalance between the inboard tanks instead of the outboards, which is no big deal at all in the 747. Even large lateral imbalances are not a big concern, but we get warnings for imbalances of 3000 pounds for the inboard and 6000 pounds for the outboard tanks.
@@subsonicflighttraining Thank you!
Very well explained, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Capt Al! I used your videos to help with my previous type (similar fms / mcp on the 767). I leave soon for 747-400 school! I can't thank you enough for these videos. They are a HUGE help!
Excellent, I love to hear that! Congratulations and best of luck on the Queen…
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Hey mate, your videos are fantastic! Watch them regularly. Weird question, but what does the triangle "science beaker" with the dots represent on the panel? Fuel jettison?
Thank you so much! That is a visual representation or symbology that those pumps are the Override Pumps 2 & 3. During fuel tank to engine, we have to manually turn off Overrides 2 & 3 and close cross feeds 1 & 4, so this is just a nice visual method of confirming you are indeed turning off the Overrides. Since they have 2X the output of a main tank pump, they represent that with the fuel, or more of it in the funnel or beaker compared to the main tanks, not a weird question by the way…
This may not apply to the 74 but in the 777 we always execute from the legs page.
Not a bad practice at all…
Hi! I'm in type training right now and these videos are a FANTASTIC tool. Thank you!!!
Great to hear!
Big thanks to you, man.Subscribed.🎉.Looking forward new videos.
Thank you!
Fantastic video! Thank you very much for it👍🏼
My pleasure!
I enjoy your works 👏👏👏👏
Thank you very much!
5:20 What is that called in the top left?
The FMS-CDU, Sometimes just called the CDU, or MCDU. Flight Management System Control Display Unit, or Multipurpose Control Display Unit. It is the interface between the pilot and the FMC, Flight Management Computer…
Great content.
Thank you, glad you find value in my tutorial briefings…
Any idea why the adding an additional ac power source AFTER the IRS are aligns causes synchronized problems as well as prohibits autoland unless you recycle the IRS all over again? It’s really annoying TBH. I’m guessing the synchronized problem is due to the ssb opening when you have two unlike power sources but to mess up the IRS system is crazy to me. This does not happen on the 777 tho.
I do not remember that being an issue, is that a current thing? I have no clue why it would do that…
The video that greatly helped me in improving my PMDG stick and rudder skill. Do you suggest aerodynamic braking or lowering the nose soon after touchdown?
Excellent! We do not recommend aerodynamic braking or continuing to hold the nose off as long as possible. At the same time, you are not lowering the nose either. When you touchdown, you do hold a slight nose up pressure to prevent the nose from slamming into the ground, and then you are not continuing that back pressure, but allowing the nose to fall to the runway in a nice, controlled manner under its own weight. It is a feel thing that is developed when flying the jet.
better then CPAT thank YOU so much>
My pleasure!
How do you get the instrument in the left down Corner.
Not sure what you are referencing, maybe the Captain’s PFD?
@@subsonicflighttraining the window with the plane Flying from left to right. You can se the angel the plane decent. The rectangular one. Sorry for bad English
@@andreaskjork518 Don't worry about the English, it is a 100% better than if I tried to write in your language. Yes, that is the Vertical Situation Display (VSD) on the Navigation Display (ND). You display it from the EFIS Control Panel. The MAP, PLAN, VOR, and APP has a CTR Pushbutton. When you push it once, it goes from Expanded Mode on the ND to Full Centered 360 degrees mode. If you push it again, it displays the VSD on the bottom 1/3 of the ND. The VSD is available on the 747-8...
What's your Vector , Victor ?😊
