2024 TJ Trout Seed Sack Contest: Largest Pumpkin Weigh Off
Saturday we stopped by TJ Trout's Seed Sack Weigh Off!
Contest rules dictated growers were to use seeds provided by Park Seeds in order to qualify. Maybe in 2025 we can get them on some local giant seeds....

Any seeds you’re eyeing for next year?
I like the new colorado state record pumpkin, but I'm looking at some bright orange and heavy to chart options. It's tough to choose
There are some big changes planned for the 2025 season. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!
Ohio has a 2731.5 this year !!!
Congratulations 😊
Did you get the New Mexico record beyond 988 lbs?
Fell short, final weight was 947

Funny I should happen upon this... Last year was my first real attempt to grow a giant. I ended up with a 70-pounder. This year, I've got two big-ish ones (I haven't measured them, but I'm sure they're over 200 pounds), but the prettiest one got a serious case of sunscald, so it's likely not going anywhere. The other is still good for competitions, but... it's grown in the most inaccessible part of my yard! There's a gate not 10 feet away, but the pumpkin is wider than the gate. There's a much larger gate at the other end of the property, but accessing it means destroying my other plants that have blocked all other routes. So... yeah, a bit of a dilemma haha. Will you be selling your seeds? It's such a beautiful pumpkin!
@thegrandadmiral7963 hah I love that! Yes seeds will be available in the late fall/early winter. Email abqbackyardgardening@gmail.com and I'll get that going when the time comes! Thank you for the interest!
This was one of my favorite stories to follow this year. A demonstration of sheer will. With a couple of tweaks you could EASILY get the state record next year by a good margin.
Thanks Nick!! I hope your patch is going well. Excited to see an update
@@albuquerquegardening lol yeah I’ve been busy/lazy but a video is in the works. PS. I thought you came up with the tune for that intro song until I heard the original the other day and was like “wow that sounds like the ABQgardening intro”
@@nicksbigpumpkin8050 lol I love a good cover/parody and a chance to butcher the original
Awesome stuff brother. You do any fishing?
@@matruthn.m.bassinGanGanG I enjoy fishing! though I don't get out much for it
Woohoo, great pumpkin! What a beaut.
Such an awesome looking pumpkin! Congrats on the successful season. Topped your best by almost 900 lbs! Amazing. You gonna grow one next year?
@@dusttodusthomestead thank you!! I'm not sure. I'd need much more automation if I dont take a season off
@albuquerquegardening yeah, I'm sure it can be extremely time-consuming. 👍🏻
Did you set the new state record?
@kristinel6352 no, we fell short by 41 pounds. I honestly feel fine with that
@@albuquerquegardening oh no! So close! But you can break it next year
We did it. Gino's Enterprise LLC came in clutch with the crane to yoink that gourd out of my back yard. We had reporters from KOB 4 News and KOAT Action 7 News covering the spectacle. I want to thank Gino's Enterprise's, Tyler over at Hydro Lyfe Growth Supply, Gonzo Farms, KOAT 7, KOB 4 and of course my wife Jessica. Also want to thank all who gave words of encouragement. I could not have done this alone.
Congratulations. Awesome
WE GOT IT OUT OF THE YARD! LETS GOOOOO! Such a fun and awesome process! Thanks for putting all the wheels in motion for this!
I was only able to grow squash once. The squash bugs are brutal.
Awesome! I can't wait to see the weigh off. Hope you get that state record! 🤞👍🏻
@dusttodusthomestead thank you! It won't be an official record(needs to be GPC weigh-off) but I'm beyond happy just to have it displayed at the fair!
@albuquerquegardening it's impressive either way. Going from 53lbs to over 1000 potentially is awesome. My best last year was 53lbs as well. This year has been rough, but I'm currently about 150 and shooting for 300 lbs by seasons end. It's fun either way. I'll be looking for the video on how it turns out for ya. Good luck. 👍🏻
Congratulations on your future State record.
Sub 300.
Will it last till halloween?
@@SOSDukecity there's a good chance
What dates will it be at the fair?
@DETHCATE the whole time. It should be specifically in the agricultural building
@@albuquerquegardening Oh nice! Thank you so much. I cant wait to see it

You deserve kudos for your achievement growing this in the high desert region. Job well done.
You should call the abq news stations to come do a story on this and moving it

Just subscribed. So cool seeing you grow in a “rough” place for pumpkins and making it work. Would love to see how optimized you can get your setup for that desert environment.
@nicksbigpumpkin8050 thank you Nick! There's plenty of room for improvement for sure. If I could get away from hand watering that would be huge for being able to put that manual effort elsewhere. I appreciate the sub
Lookin great! I’m glad you stood up a channel. My boys caught a peak of your pumpkin over the wall & have been following its growth with your updates here. Now they are begging me to grow big pumpkins lol. Maybe next year 😅 I hope you make it to the weigh off! Good luck!
@burrocakes8048 that's so cool! I'll go ahead and apologize now for that! Haha. Thank you(and the boys) for the support!
bad ass man! I believe you will crush my record if you can keep it going. You're fruit still looks very young and fresh. I hope you can get it weighed. If you get the record I will have to move back. Good luck!
@calicole9870 thank you! Anything to have more folks growing pumpkins out here
That's A good looking pumpkin!

You can’t quit! You gotta get to 1000lbs!
@@capt.americamom7101 no quitting, just tired lol
@@albuquerquegardening I hear ya but it’s so awesome!
@@albuquerquegardening I wish we could help. We have a tractor but not sure how to get it over your fence.
This is great! Lol omg you need a tractor!…*
The imiticloprid will get rid of all your bug problems. I foliar that stuff because it'll kill any bugs it hits at same time it'll work its way into your plant(systemic). Eagle 20 will nuke any and all powder mold. I'd use eagle 20 once every 2wks and then imiticloprid once a week to every other week. Just depends on how well it clears all the bugs.
I appreciate it. I've changed my routine to more or less follow that at this point
@@albuquerquegardening at the same time the least amount of things you can spray the better. Eagle 20 can slow your growth down sometimes if used too many times or at too high of a dose so be careful with it. Or so I've been told. Not sure how correct the last part of that is.
