What ia the best way to find out (a test?) whether someone is polyamorous, or just wants to compensate for something with additional partners?
Here's the true test I've found: Anyone can say they want to be polyamorous so as to have access to additional partners for themselves. The real test is whether they're also cool with seeing/knowing their partner is getting other partners too. If they suddenly get weird about that, you know they're just selfish, not poly.

@@kenofken9458 speaking/thinking in absolutes or generalities can prevent you from experiencing all the beauty available in life as most of life is gray, not black and white.
@@Passport2Pleasure There is truth in that, but in my experience in ENM spanning nearly 30 years, I've found there are some very reliable behavioral clues. People who obviously want a one-sided open relationship are not poly. Not in any way that is healthy and sustainable. I've seen this play out countless times where the male of the couple insists on a "one penis policy", or where one partner exercises "veto power" more or less anytime their partner gains interests from someone or demands to close up the relationship when they perceive their partner is having more fun than they are etc. That's not to say there cannot be situations where both partners truly want a one-sided situation like cuckolding, but as a general matter when the instinct is clearly to deny your partner the freedom you demand for yourself, that's not a healthy dynamic and it's not going to lead to happiness or stability.
@@kenofken9458then we agree, because what you’re describing isn’t polyamory. It’s because of patterns like this that I made an entire video about poly red flags! th-cam.com/video/Hr5TiEIBsWk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JTka2vGZo7zWmIYR

I'm sorry your experiences haven't been positive for you.
@@ianstarks419 Me too - any relationship can be a positive, negative orneutral experience. The structure itself is inconsequential.
I'm sorry to hear that has been your experience. Statistically speaking, mono relationships aren't doing well. The more we actually learn about and understand relationship dynamics and communication skills, the better chance we have at net-positive relationships of ANY structure. I hope that possibility for you.

What's the biggest 'red flag' you've experienced in dating? Let's create a master list together!👇
Probably controlling and/or stalkerish behavior. In the dark ages long ago before I went down the ENM path, one woman I dated, very early on in the relationship started keeping tabs on me. Like having her friends follow me throughout the day. She would then confront me about "why were you speaking to (name)? I usually couldn't answer because the conversations were so completely mundane and insignificant and with people I had zero romantic interest in. It turned out that while she was more or less accusing me of constantly cheating, that was projection of what she was actually doing. That was one of the things that helped convince me to give up monogamy forever.

Avoidants really are the worst in any kind of relationship.
@@NewyJon7787 it sounds like you’ve had some rough experiences with avoidant behavior. How have you managed to learn and heal from it?
@@Passport2Pleasure - Definitely, One of those relationships that was great until it suddenly ended. Initially my confidence with women took a massive hit. I had to see a therapist to get my head around what happened. I had no knowledge of attachment styles until it was too late. Getting back to focusing on myself, gym, therapy and work helped a lot. Confidence is back and as a result, getting dates with women is a lot easier/ more frequent. No idea when i will consider myself ready for a commitment again, but i am probably closer to ready now that i don't think about my ex partner every hour of every day anymore. She discussed the option of being non-monogamous at one point, but as you talk about, for her it was a way of remaining emotionally distant from me rather than anything else.
@@NewyJon7787 thank you so much for sharing that and I’m sorry to hear you had to go through it. Also want to acknowledge you for taking care of yourself and creating value out of it for yourself. It’s hard not to generalize and think/speak in absolutes (all women, all men, etc.) when something like that happens.
I've lived most of my adult life as ENM. Nobody is closing any relationship with me. If they do, that just means its time for us to part ways. For people who have been monogamous for a long time and only made a brief foray into polyamory or open relationships, that might be a different matter. Even there I have to say that most of the time when I see one partner wanting to close up the relationship again, it means that they've had their fun and don't want their partner to enjoy what they did.
@@kenofken9458 closing a relationship doesn’t have to be permanent. Any number of things can occur where it may be necessary for a time depending on the relationship agreements. One size doesn’t fit all, across the board. How do you arrive at your relationship agreements with your partners?
@@Passport2Pleasure It's true any relationship has to be tailored by the people within it. For many years I have only lived ENM/poly. I make it clear to anyone I get involved with or may that that fact is non-negotiable with me. It's generally not an issue because I really only date within circles of people who themselves are highly experienced and poly by nature themselves. Within that framework, there is much that is open to negotiation such as the specific dynamic. Do they want a relationship where we talk or at least text every day? Do they want to see me as often as possible or just a see-you-when-I-see you FWB situation? Do they mostly want our time to be one on one or do they want to go to lifestyle clubs or events together? Do they want us to meet each other's families or metas or just keep all that separate?
@@kenofken9458 Thank you for sharing your relational dynamics as a beautiful example of what's possible when we know what's available to us! How did you first discover ENM and that it was right for you?
@@Passport2Pleasure I think I first figured out that I had some kind of ENM orientation long before any of this stuff was in the mainstream. In my early 20s I, like of course every other guy ever born, fantasized about a threesome. Of course with most men, the fantasy breaks down if their girlfriend wants another guy too. As I though about it, that didn't bother me at all. I kept subconsciously attracting partners who also didn't want monogamy but in those days it wasn't acceptable to admit it, so there was lots of cheating etc. Then I figured out if I don't want monogamy and none of the people drawn to me do, why keep trying to fake it for societal approval or whatever? I first discovered swinging and then after a dozen or more years in that, polyamory. The latter was a harder transition because emotional involvement was a huge taboo in the swinging lifestyle at that time. It took some more years to figure out what kinds of relationships and dynamics worked for me.
@@kenofken9458 beautifully handled and articulated! Thank you so much for sharing 💗
