“Ideal Cut” is a term developed to describe a round brilliant diamond with proportions which (a) reflect nearly all light that enters it back to the eyes of the viewer, (b) has a pleasing balance of white light return / brightness, spectral colors / fire and dynamic contrast, and (c) has exceptional craftsmanship in the areas of polish and symmetry.

@@arza643 Ideal is the highest grade IGI and some other labs confer for round brilliants. However there are other labs that give excellent as their top grade.

I’m currently trying to find a key too. Did you ever find one for IGI?

A diamond with these proportions would not receive an Ideal cut grade, and a 41.3 degree pavilion angle is on the steep side, but the overall combination is not considered steep/deep because the large table offsets the crown angle, reducing the total depth to 60.8%. An abraded culet means the very bottom (point) of the diamond has been abraded (scratched), possibly by another diamond that rubbed against it. A diamond polisher may be able to repair it with no loss of weight, depending on severity, but it’s not something that’s visible in normal wear.

cut grade, whats the different between ideal and excellent? i notice some of ideal cut have noted to have hearts and arrows. but the excellent cut don’t have that..

Thanks for reaching out. IGI uses master color stone sets that conform to international standards, to ensure consistency. Diamonds with the same color grade can appear differently depending on several factors, including shape, size, cut-quality, fluorescence or phosphorescence, and viewing direction, in particular.

Unfortunately to your dismay, LGDs are actually diamond, so they are graded the same.
