Gravel Bikepacking the Bizz Johnson Trail
The Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail is a "rail trail" that follows the old Southern Pacific railroad and tours through 25 miles of the Lassen region's forested landscape. Most of the trail traverses the Susan River Canyon, which includes numerous bridges, trestles and tunnels.
I'd been wanting to check out the Bizz Johnson Trail for some time now. It's known for being exceptionally beautiful in the fall. And there are free camping options on the BLM-managed public lands that the trail passes through-making it a relatively cheap getaway, only 2 hours from home. Being currently based in Redding, California, we had originally planned on doing an overnighter in the mountains north of us. But smoke from a nearby wildfire and the onset of an imminent rainstorm had us venture east for an alternative route. I was accompanied by Joe Tona, a local riding buddy.
In early October, we headed out to Susanville and gave it a go. I called ahead to the Lassen County Visitor Center where they gleefully allowed us to park in their lot once I told them what we were trying to do. We also caught wind of a marathon that was happening on the trail this same weekend, so I checked with the race director to make sure we weren't going to have any issues.
It ended up being pretty cool to see other athletes out there doing their thing. We even got cheered on from many of the race supporters along the way. It rained on us a bit while we were out there, but luckily it cleared up in the evening and we were even able to start a fire at camp to get warm and toasty. We ended up riding a total of 45 miles on the first day, from Susanville to Westwood and then back to camp. The next day was a 15-mile ride from camp back to Susanville.

This was a different kind of trip. We took three kids-from my cousin's extended family-on their first ever bikepacking adventure. The Shasta Dam Overnighter goes from Redding, California out to Shasta Campground (near Chappie-Shasta OHV Area) via the Sacramento River Rail Trail. We rode, or sometimes walked our bikes, a total of nearly 40 miles over 2 days. The kids did great and still had ener...

When summer cools down in Redding, you’ve got to get out there. That's exactly what the three of us did after a rainstorm came through with clouds and a big drop in temperature. In late August, I was joined by riding buddies-Dom and Joe-to do a nearby overnighter. We came across information about there being Backcountry Camping options at Whiskeytown NRA and wanted to give it a go. Whiskeytown ...

In this video, I join some riding buddies for a sunny Saturday ride at the Whiskey Run Trail System on the Southern Oregon Coast (between Coos Bay and Bandon). THANK YOU FOR VIDEO!
You bet! :)
Excellent video Dallas, I've ridden a little in Lassen and further north in Modoc, but that route just looks fun, and I'll have to add it to next year's adventure list! Great to see a new video amigo!
@@thebiglimey Nice! Yeah, it’s a cool trail. I’m wanting to check out the Modoc rail trail at some point too. Maybe we’ll be able to meet up on a ride or when I’m back up in Oregon sometime! :)
I miss the green! Super ready for some rain. 🌧️
@@Reddingadventurehub For sure!
Love the channel! Subscribed.
Awesome, welcome to the party!
Looks like a great ride! Thanks for taking us along!
For sure, thanks for watching! :)
Come to eastern Oregon and ride through the Baker, Wallowa, and Grande Ronde valleys. You'll be amazed.
I would love to get out there at some point!
THANK YOU FOR VIDEO!
@@ABAKORSKIY For sure! Kept getting questions on it, so figured I’d share. :)
Gorgeous, and amazingly similar to my coast and forest in NW England.
I bet it’s beautiful over there! Thanks for watching. :)
Hello. I enjoyed your two OCT videos! I've hiked the OCT last year, and was thinking biking it too. 1. It would be great if you did a video on your bikes and your bikepacking gear! 2. In your RidewithGPS page, you said you can't ride on the beach between March to September because of Snowy Plovers. I don't recall any signs anywhere on the OCT that said you can't ride bikes on the beach during those times. There ARE signs and ropes that say to stay on the Beach Access trails and to not go up into the soft sand/stay on the wet sand. Do you have a link I could look at that talks about "no bikes"?
Hey there, thanks for watching! Glad you liked the videos. We do show off our bikes and gear towards the end of the first video. And in the second video, I show one of the signs about the plovers when we hit the beach in Florence. I’m surprised you never came across this info on your hike. Plover beaches have many restrictions that you can read here: www.fs.usda.gov/detail/siuslaw/alerts-notices/?cid=fseprd518707
Just wondering if you planned this route, or is it a trail I can get off rwgps, etc? Would like to ride this. It has the perfect mix of road, double track, single track! Love how you film it, just perfect. Thanks for including the rest of us.
Yes, there is a route link in the description! I’ll be doing a write up soon to post it on Bikepacking.com. This is a great classic route that I’ve made some slight revisions to include Lake Siskiyou on the last day. :)
Our group rides out here every day!
It’s a great ride, one of my favorites! I love looping in the dirt trails on the other side of the river too.
i need to go to that spot where the old bridge looking thing is. I cant watch the scary parts with cliffs hee hee the mother comes out in me.
Westfir and Oakridge are beautiful areas in the Cascades! Many old covered bridges all over Oregon.

I love watching the videos when, I need to chill love the music choices

@@ColdBeer-7447 For sure bro! 🍻
Good to see you putting it out there Dallas. Cheers!
Hell yeah, thanks!
Many thanks for posting this video -- it was so inspiring that we went out and did it for ourselves. Notably we were on Plus bikes wearing 3 inch and 2.8 inch rubber. In my opinion 3 inch was fine, but I would not go thinner than 2.8". The route exceeded my expectations and I'd put it squarely in my all time favourite bike rides list. It is an area of absolutely outstanding natural beauty. We threw in two super fun short boat hops for the Nehalem River and the Tillamook Bay. Just posted a little YT video of it here, shot in July with perfect weather: th-cam.com/video/-syrVxzqbjI/w-d-xo.html . Keep on posting the awesome content!
So awesome! I loved to see how you guys made the ride your own. Riding plus tires and finding some ferry boats to hop the bays along the way for less highway miles. I can't think of a better way to experience the Oregon coastline. Glad you both got out there and thoroughly enjoyed it! :)
Nice, looks like a good time. We still need to do the OTT.
Yes we do!! Maybe next year we can plan something out there.
@@BikeCampChill sounds good 👍
THANKS, WHERE IS YOUR FATBIKE? )
Haha, good question! I didn’t bring the fat tires on this one but it would’ve helped on the sandy sections for sure. I’m definitely tempted to take the fat bike out there soon. Especially when snow season hits. :)
@@BikeCampChill EXCELLENT! WE WILL BE WAITING FOR MORE FATBIKE VIDEOS!

This channel is a cut above many of the other cycling channels. Interesting off beat locations, good editing and music make it easy to watch. I find it relaxing and inspiring for my own rides. Good job!
Thanks Joe! Inspiring adventures and chill vibes was my hope with these. :)
So niiiice Son! Dom & guys! It's cool to see you guy's having fun while sharing these interesting area's around that we've not seen💖 Beautiful!
Beautiful for sure!!
So rad Dallas! I'll have to put that on the list for future trips!
Been wanting to do something out there for a while! Mount Shasta & Castle Crags (adjacent to Lake Siskiyou) are beautiful areas to visit for sure. :)

That was super awesome guys thanks! I used to live in Oregon… now I’m Michigan… we can’t ride our coastline.
Glad you enjoyed it! Oregon is a special place, but I'm sure Michigan has some cool stuff too. :)
Thanks!
Yeah, buddy!!
Much love Bro! I feel guilty of a weak donation. But single dad status, it's all good, you deserve much more
I need to get my MTB mojo back on and head out to Oakridge! Great to see an upload from you Dallas, and looks like you had a rad time!
Hell yeah! This was actually my first time riding these trails with full suspension, lots of fun. Also missed seeing you when I stopped by Shift. Cool spot. Maybe next time.
What! Those ridges are scary! And you were going fast! Dang son, you can ride 👏👏🙏👊👍💥 This is more than racing! Gpa Mignano would be stoked😍 That was thrilling with beautiful views & capturing the event also 👌 Good job on footage, music & having fun through it as well💓 I'm a proud mama😃🤩
Def a fun one!!
Great video. Definitely on my bucketblist. Thanks for the video and link to route. At what tire pressure did you use for ridding on sand and on hwy?
Hey Joel, glad you enjoyed the video. We usually had our psi set from 6-10. Lower when in sand and higher when on pavement. Usually ended up around 8 if we didn’t want to adjust it much on a mixed day. Also depends on the tire size and tread. You definitely get a feel for it after a bit on what works best. Even the sand density and texture changed along the way.
Great info on tire pressure, thank you. Can you recommend a good pump for my 26x4 fat tire? Off to watch your southern half video!
@@joelbatts8760 We both use the Lezyne Micro Floor Drive High Volume Pump on our rides. Amazing!
@@BikeCampChill The pump is on the Amazon wish list! Thank you.
Electric bikes at low tide on southern Oregon beaches in the fog and while on magic mushrooms is an amazing experience!
Wow, sounds like quite the trip! :)
Curious how your charging your batteries during this trip. Would be a great ride as long as charging wasnt an issue.
Hey there, these are not e-bikes. We rode with good old-fashioned human power. There were many people along the way that thought we were riding electric as well. We do usually charge up a few power banks to bring and charge our phones and other electronics though.
@@BikeCampChill do you think this trip is doable on an e-bike?
Good question. There are many signs saying “no motorized vehicles” so it depends on how they classify e-bikes in various areas. We do pass many towns where you could get a hotel room to charge each night. Have fun with it! Thanks for watching.
99% of people I meet while fat bikepacking think my bike is electric just cause it has fat tires. I'd like to do the west coast next year.
There’s a new trail that recently opened here as well that didn’t make it in the video. Canyon Holler is a fun flow trail. These trails get really good shade as well.
yee really fun, hmu sometime if you are down
Nice trail! Looks like one I could do. BTW; I've recently started to ride the roads in the Tribal Land up around but not to Pony Creek Res. Some of those hills are very challenging to this old guy but I do get a good bit of exercise in a short amount of time.
Always nice to find something challenging you can do close to home! Hope you’re enjoying the coastal weather out there. :)
TY son, for showing us the beautiful land we have around us! Dad & Gpa are with you. That music is awesome! And you know when they say,"thems fighting words?" I'd say "that my son, was a fighting ride!"🎉
It’s been fun finding trails to explore for sure!
Hi Dallas. Looks like a trail well suited for fat tires. Did you ever complete the coast ride from CB to the south? I'm getting ready to do the 3rd annual summer solstice ride from Charleston to the Cape on June 20th. I was just thinking about you the other day while riding through downtown and I'm glad to see you looking good and doing well!
Hey Joe, I’ve been switching back and forth between my Salsa Fargo and the fat bike (Salsa Mukluk). Not really riding for speed lol. We did do the coast all the way to PO but then most of the rideable trail gets more spotty after that. I’m back in CA for now, but will be coming up to enjoy more of OR again soon. Lots to explore. :)
@@BikeCampChillGood luck and keep up the good work!
You did a great job! Your son is a cutie pie.

Thanks for watching!
The frame bag was homemade?
Yeah, you can find instructions and templates online! Example here: bikepacking.com/gear/how-to-make-a-bikepacking-framebag-krampus/
Hey, I built one of those benches at the BLM campsite! Glad it survived and you got to enjoy it, too. Thanks for the video.
That's awesome! I'm happy to know you stumbled across this video. That spot saved our asses out there.
Is this ride with a partner???
I rode it with my cousin, lots of fun!
Middle of nowhere. Favorite place to be.
For sure, it was a blast!
@@BikeCampChill how many days in the back country before you reach a town?
yeah I'd rather ride a motorbike
To each their own. I used to ride dirt bikes growing up and my grandpa and dad even raced them. I’m sure a motor bike would be a lot of fun out there too!
I really enjoyed your vid. thanks for putting this on TH-cam. RAD!! :)
Thanks for watching dude, I'm glad you liked it. Rad indeed!
Yeah your title is all wrong Oregon is nowhere near the Southern tier the Southern tier is from St Augustine Florida to San Diego California nowhere near Oregon if you're going to print stuff or show TH-cam videos at least get your titles right
Hey Scott, this ride/route is about the "southern tier" of the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT), referring to the southern section. Sorry you found that confusing. The thumbnail and title clearly state the Oregon Coast.
This is The anything but panniers endboss... All those tiny bags all over.... So many zippers
Oh for sure, you know it lol. I got a Salsa rear rack for the fat bike recently. Definitely will help if I need to fit more next time. Loving the wide ass frame bag too!
