Day 89 - Bars, Heels and Toes 🦶(Diagnosing Abscesses)
This is very frustrating. So many trimmers states that the toe has to always be kept short. Other trimmers states that the heels might be a little high, and some trimmers are telling that the frog should not be touched at all. I wonder what is correct? How is the heel, toe and frog on wild horses? Why so many different answers? Best regards from Norway
We follow the horse's natural constants, not the ideals and ideas of human beings - we call that PPT - personal preference trimming. When it comes to the toes, a healthy hoof will have a naturally healthy short toe. If the trimmer feels they need to shorten the toe beyond the horse's natural parameters either because of stretch or other spurious claims, then that is them guessing what needs to be done - and they won't be consistent between horses, hooves - even hooves on the same horse, it would be impossible. So ultimately Mother Nature is correct not humans. So follow Mother Nature's constants and you won't go wrong :)
I would love to see after this explanation a few (cadaver)hooves, looking from the heels down, with a wrong balance to show examples. I mean toe missing is obvious, but if you have the toe in place when can it still be wrong balanced? Do I see raised hoof wall from hsp or do I see a sole that is not down to hsp. Love to see those examples they way you look down the bottom of the hoof from heel to toe.
We've shown examples in previous videos, but yes we can show those again 👍
Enjoying your lessons. Thank you
Hi from New Zealand
Is this the same for a Mini horse? Their feet seem to be different than a regular size horse. They stand more upright, right? Or wrong? I'm trying so hard to understand all of this.
Absolutely the same for a mini horse and a donkey, in fact every equine no matter their size or breed. The problem is that people think that following the constant of the HSP should be different for different hooves - yet it isn't in any way - but those ideals and ideas, which we call PPT, personal preference trimming, is what has got so many equines into terrible states with their hooves - particularly minis. Follow your mini's constant - not someone's guesswork 👍
Glad to see your INRS videos again. What kind of injuries can occur if the frog is cut shallow when shoes are used. I would think the p3 will want to sink through the sole?? Cheers
When the frog is cut short it will make the horse sore and cause the horse not to load the back of their foot properly and load the toe more - forcing an imbalance... this can lead to issues within the foot, navicular being one of them. P3 doesn't sink through the foot, but it can get very close to the outside world both in the front and the back when too much hoof is removed - including frog and heels. So, always follow the HSP and you will never go wrong. 👍
Hi I can see and hear you
This was so well explained , Thank you !
Glad it was helpful! 😊
What a fantastic starting video for 'It's Not Rocket Science' 2025 👏👏 Deserves multiple re-watches
Thank you 🚀
Hola alguna idea una dieta un caballo carreras por el momento está con pasto
I am more confused now I think. With coke can donkey hooves, they can look like the are at the HSP from underneath, all solid sole, and even more challenging to get heel to heel balance with a big high frog blocking the sight line 🤦🏼
Yes of course, because these hooves haven't been trimmed to the correct dorsopalmar balance for a very long time, and now they have tremendous compaction - again a hoof care issue. It takes time, patience and experience to bring those feet back to how they should be. If you need more help please join our group on FB The Phoenix Way: Path 2 Hoof Health.
Love these! When mind trys to complicate things, these videos help so much because it really isnt Rocket science! thank you Lindsay <3

Thank you for talking about the bruising and explaining it in more detail than before. Makes even more sense now.
You're very welcome :)
Hi Lindsey. I have an Arab i rescued. Body score 2. I fed her, she gained weight. Had been lame before, i was told old check ligament injury. No one xrayed her foot. Her feet were fragile when i got her. She went a little lame. Had farrier and vet out. No abscess. Xrays of foot showed she had foundered in the past and slight rotation of P3. P1 and P2 irregular angle both front feet. Vet recommends wedge shoes 1-2 degrees. She immediately went worse. Took them off. Retrimmed. She is now on every 4 weeks for a trim only. Doing alot better. Any suggestions? Sorry this is long Janice
Hi Janice, yes looks like she's not been trimmed to her natural parameters for a long time. Check out my latest #ItsNotRocketScience video it might help you understand why P3 is not in the correct position: th-cam.com/video/CnqVgHwxK6k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Fc1QzqaHVqWhVuUK - also check out the others in that series. Plus join our FB group The Phoenix Way: Path 2 Hoof Health and we will help you there (link in the description). We can help you 👍
Thank you! I've been trimming my ponies' hooves as an untutored amateur for decades, sometimes getting it right and sometimes not. I've also had numerous barefoot trimmers of various abilities. This explanation I could have done with from the start.
Glad I could help! 👍
Thank you for doing more of these videos! They are very informative and well drawn out and explained.👏👏👏👏
More to come! ❤
Brilliant- thank you 😊
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic Lindsay ☺
Thank you 🚀

Glad it helped! ❤️
I love your "It's Not Rocket Science" videos. Thank you for bringing them back!
By popular demand - hope you enjoy them 🚀
Fab, one of my ponies has developed cracks on the outside quarters on three hooves. I had a few issues with him after the vet dentist came, she did “horsemanship” as she called it to get the needle into him, he’s a very nervous rescue, fine with me up until her visit, then after I couldn’t get near him could trim his feet, which I had been doing prior. Could it be the length of time he was not trimmed that has caused the cracks?
Possibly - and the hoof balance going out of whack. Check out the latest #ItsNotRocketScience🚀 lesson which might help :)
Yay!! Fantastic lindsay 👏 💪
Thank you 🚀
Another wonderful mini Challenge!👌
Thank you 🙏
Hahaha.... you sound just like all the owners that have the "best" farrier or trimmer 😅 Well how do you know they are the best ? " because they told me so " 😂😂😂
Totally!
Good morning
Same to you :)
Thanks for sharing this all
My pleasure :)
Rings indicate problems!!! Pay attention before they start!
They certainly do!
Daughter started turning her horse out for about fifteen minutes a day, right around September in October she came up with an abscess, and again another abscess in mid December. Watching this video I’m thinking the grass she was eating during turnout contributed to her abscess….thoughts?
Yes grass exacerbating issues in the foot, which were likely already there. Check the bars, the white line, and whether or not the trim is being done to the horse's natural parameters (likely not). The diet just brought it to a head.
Great lesson , thank you
You are welcome!
Morning
Morning :)
Happy New Year!!!
Happy new year!!
So this person was genetically from equines ( horse) family 🙄🤔😅🤣🤣🤣
lol.
So should you free feed low NSC hay to IR horses? Or just give them more than 1.5 percent of their weight?
You should feed a mixed species hay, with no rye or alfalfa or cereal hays, and give them as much as they will eat - with lots and lots of natural movement.
I love this discussion as so many over look the proper trim and the PPT that causes damage. Thank you for sharing this valuable experience!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Can caudal hoof failure be helped? I think my ott has this in his hinds.
Yes it can by the right trims, lots of movement and the right diet... but it takes a great deal of time and patience, and you might need to use boots for comfort for a while.
Every question and doubt addressed!!! 🎉❤
Great news 👍❤️
Sadly many of us dont have access to a track system. We have no choice but to be on a traditional yard. It’s so difficult when we have no say. Cant move the horse neither 😢
You don't have to keep your horses on a track system, but make sure their hooves are trimmed correctly, that they are not fed extra feeds/supplements, and they are turned out with friends on areas that are not stressed short grasses. Tracks are optimum, but if you can't do that, then make sure you are doing everything else to the best as possible.
What do you do when you can only get the same hay from the same grower every year? I am SO limited on hay sources. I'm told it's a fescue mix. No clover, rye or alfalfa in it.
First you learn a few of the standard grasses so you can see what's in there rather than relying on what they are telling you. If it is a mix then it could be ok. Learn to recognise rye, if there isn't any then you could be ok.
Thanks a lot for such educational videos! My only doubt with this method is, doesn't having such a long toe put more strain on the DDF, which pulls harder on the back of the pedal bone making it more prone to rotate?
The DDFT has nothing to do with rotating P3 - it is incorrect hoof care ie high heels. Check out my #ItsNotRocketScience playlist for more lessons on the subject.
What a wonderful thing you have done Lindsay and Garry. Teaching and learning in one weekend . Sounds absolutely inspiring
Thank you 🙏❤️
Hi from Comox bc
Hi!
This is why Dr. Tucker is so precious ❤
❤️
Vet cognitive dissonance and a out of control ego
Sadly in most cases yes, covering up lack of hoof knowledge.
I didn’t realize acupuncture would leave such large holes…. The needles are very fine and there are different depths that they are placed, so many variations …. Good reason to stop using needles and use a Teishin !
We didn’t realize either… amazing learning ❤️🙏
Ok but... they think they need heels on the front feet but none in the back. Nothing better than positive p3 fronts and negative p3 hinds. XD
Very common scenario, too positive on the fronts, too negative on the hinds. :(
Wow,wow, wow…. Excellent discussion on the toe ! Many epiphanies ❤❤❤
👍
Everytime there is so much to learn! I can not get enough ☺️ Thanks a lot! ❤
You're welcome :)
