Practicing Persistence
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva is the symbolic representation of skillful action and practice in daily life. Statues and paintings of Samantabhadra often depict him riding a giant elephant with six tusks representing the six paramitas or “perfections.” The paramitas are the core virtues or values of a Bodhisattva. In this dharma talk, Ryūshin Sensei shares some thoughts about vīrya paramita (diligence or persistence) and its relationship to the other paramitas (Generosity, Morality, Patience, Concentration, and Wisdom).

Taking Refuge in Your Life
มุมมอง 299 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In Hakuin Zenji's Song of Zazen, it states: The karma of our transmigration Is our dark path of ignorance. From dark path to dark path we wander. When shall we be cut from birth and death? When we are suffering, our first instinct is to struggle. We start looking for a way to escape our experiences, thinking that the solution lies outside of our current life. However, when struggling becomes a ...
Clever Graveyard Fox
มุมมอง 821 วันที่ผ่านมา
My favorite animal is the fox. Something about their long, bushy tails and wily personalities never fails to make me smile. Several foxes live in my neighborhood, and sometimes they visit me during my morning walks. Truth be told, I can't help myself from greeting them out loud whenever I see them. The words, "Hello, fox! You are my friend!", come out of my mouth reflexively, almost before I re...
Bring Me the Rhinoceros

One day Yanguan called to his assistant “Bring me the rhinoceros fan:’ The assistant said, “It is broken!" Yanguan said, u "In that case, bring me the rhinoceros." Sometimes, life asks something of us that seems impossible to provide with the tools and methods that we are accustomed to using. Maybe some of our "go to" ways of being aren't available or suddenly rendered ineffective. What do we d...
Walk Toward the Moon

One morning, I was walking in the darkness, confused about a dilemma that life had presented to me. I came upon an intersection, a street sign, and the full moon in the pre-dawn sky. This is a haiku that I wrote about that moment. -Ryūshin Poem and Intro/Outro art by Ryūshin Moon graphic from nounproject.com
Your Stance Toward Life
มุมมอง 1128 วันที่ผ่านมา
Posture is very important in Zen practice both on and off the cushion. In formal zazen practice, we sit with our backs straight, our eyes open, breathing softly into the belly, and our minds in an open and spacious posture. Practice is returning back to this posture again and again. Off the cushion, what is your posture or stance toward life? In this dharma talk, Ryūshin Sensei shares some thou...
Your Most Precious Gift

Are you good enough? A core teaching in Mahayana Buddhism is that all sentient beings have Buddhanature, but we can't truly realize this truth without practice. In this dharma talk, Ryūshin Sensei shares some thoughts about the Myth of the Moon Rabbit and the practice of offering your whole self, warts and all, as your most authentic expression of the Buddhadharma.

Not Being Prepared
มุมมอง 6หลายเดือนก่อน
Sometimes, life catches you off guard. Sometimes, you have a regular commitment that requires adequate time to prepare (e.g., offering a dharma talk on Fridays at the same time every week), and you just....don't get to the preparations. In this dharma talk, Ryūshin Sensei comes clean about not being prepared to give this dharma talk and shares some spontaneous thoughts about doing the best you ...
What are you chasing?
มุมมอง 11หลายเดือนก่อน
The Second Noble Truth explains that the cause of suffering is our natural tendency to constantly seek satisfaction for our desires. Whenever one desire is fulfilled, another arises in its place, leading to an unending cycle of striving to meet our desires, often referred to as samsara or "perpetual wandering." If we are not mindful, even the desire for enlightenment can become another impulse ...
Let Go of Outcome

TRIGGER WARNING: This video includes a discussion about death and dying. In Buddhism, the fact that we must all live with the knowledge that we will eventually die is called "The Great Matter." When someone we love passes away, it can be a jarring reminder of impermanence. At the same time, our loved ones serve as "Divine Messengers" when they pass away, inviting us to wake up to the fact that,...
Letting the Mask Fall Off
มุมมอง 172 หลายเดือนก่อน
Shikantaza (just sitting) is the practice of showing up just as we are in every moment. This practice can seem complicated because most of us are accustomed to "wearing a mask" rather than just being. We spend so much time and effort either pretending to be someone "good" and protecting ourselves from the possibility that we might be "bad." In this teisho, Ryūshin Sensei shares some thoughts on...
IDGBTT

Many people are drawn to Zen practice because they are hoping that it will help them to become "better" people or that it will make their lives "better". This attitude is understandable AND it is very likely to lead to experiences of disappointment, frustration, and struggle. In this dharma talk, Ryūshin Sensei shares some thoughts about being one with life as it is.
Don't Answer the Question
มุมมอง 93 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Venerable Nargarjuna said, "the mind that sees into the flux of arising and decaying and recognizes the transient nature of the world is also known as the "Bodhi-mind." Most people don't casually wander into a zendo and begin zazen practice because they are just curious. On the contrary, most prospective zen students deliberately seek out zen communities and teachers because they have impor...

A fine memorial for Kevin. Thanks for making this! I'm reading Thich Nhat Hanh's "Cracking the Walnut." Your video is a great complement to his thoughts from his Buddhist tradition.
