Coastal Patrol Cub
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 9 ม.ค. 2024
Hi folks, my name is Brian and I am the current caretaker of the Coastal Patrol Cub, a 1946 Piper J-3 Cub decked out in World War 2 Civil Air Patrol markings.
Located in Central Virginia, my goal with the airplane, this channel, and my other social media pages is to highlight the wartime history of the Civil Air Patrol, with a particular focus on the coastal patrol operations along the Atlantic seaboard. I also share the joys and challenges of owning and flying a vintage tailwheel airplane.
I hope you will follow along as I take the Cub airborne and around to local fly-ins and events, and I hope I am able to provide some entertaining videos as well as some good educational material regarding the wartime contributions of the Civil Air Patrol!

Join me for a quick lap around the pattern at 7W4, Lake Anna airport in central Virginia in my 1946 J-3 Cub. It was my first flight in almost a month and a half so it's far from perfect, but I was happy enough with the result. About 5 knots of crosswind from the right, departing and landing runway 08.
Visiting my "first" airport!
มุมมอง 152 หลายเดือนก่อน
I'm home visiting family right now, and took some time to bring my son to the airport where I earned my Private Pilot's License over 20 years ago. I took ground school here with my dad in 1997, started flying in 1999, and haven't looked back since! This was the starting point of my career flying for the Air Force, and my time volunteering with the Civil Air Patrol. Some things are different, a ...

I love that im friends with the owner lol
@@PlanesandMoreYT very cool! He is a super nice guy.
Clearly someone hasn't watched the hbo Chernobyl series. That plane is going down idc what the actual science says.
Plane seems fine so far! Who knows, maybe if I do this enough I can make it glow in the dark!
The big ones always fly better. Beautiful model
@@MF-og1ct I would still be terrified of crashing it lol.
Thank you for uploading
Of course!
Beautiful
Thanks! It looks so good in person!
👍
I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Fair!
Yoke right?
Close! No yokes in a Cub, but the front stick is removed.
Dual engine mounted machine guns...
Wouldn't that be something! Just need to work up an interrupter gear for the C-85...
Control stick
Correct! My sticks are removable, have the front one out right now for some repairs to the radio push-to-talk switch.
Attitude Indicator 😎
Can't miss what you never had... 😉
A person
Nope, a physical thing in the airplane!
Idk
Unfortunate!
An AIM-9X
I don't think I'd have room for one of those in the cockpit!
Steering wheel.
Well, there definitely isn't one of those, that's for sure! 😁
@@CoastalPatrolCubcontrol stick then?
@@FAZWORTH421 winner winner! I have the front control stick out right now for some work on the push-to-talk switch for the radio.
This Virginian Dutchboy says "Meh it only gets worse."
😭😭😭😭
All planes are gliders.
Especially if you don't keep up with engine maintenance!
If that works, it'll be great.
Thanks! I agree. I have more progress to share soon.
Beautiful airplane
Thanks!

G'day, Old Ultralight Aeroplanologist here... I spent about 7 years as the Aerotow Launch Controller for an outfit using the prototype Bailey,-Moyes Dragonfly to decorate the Sky with Rogallos in the 1990s...(backtrack me to my Playlists to fact check that....). Anyway, when towing ANYTHING, it is conventional to rig at least ONE release-mechanism to enable the Towline to be released by the Tow-Pilot... Also, to cater for possibly failed Release Mechanisms, it is further considered Best Practice to have a Weak-Link at each end of the Towline..., One G at the Load-end, and 1.5 G at the Tug end, with G being the Take-off Weight of the Rogallo + Pilot... In your application, "G" might better be The (Calculated) Aerodynamic Drag, of your "Winged Shuttlecock" At the VNE of your Cub. That way your Load should Klingon nice and secure, at all Acceptable Airspeeds..., And if you hook it on a Powerline or a Treetop then It will be safely left behind Without Yawing you off-course, Or Breaking your Airframe at it's Attachment. Just(ifiably ?) sayin'. Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
That is a very sensible point, thank you! I will say this is not intended to go very far behind the airplane, so if I'm dragging it into trees or power lines things have already gone very, very wrong. But if I can avoid making a bad situation worse I'll do it! 😁 The airplane end is easy as the line is not solidly connected to anything right now, so I can just let go essentially. But a breakaway link on the birdie end would be a great idea. I'll implement something before the next test flight!
@@CoastalPatrolCub Excellent ! We used to use Venetian Blind-Cord/Builder's String-Line for tying the actual Tow-Rings to the Rings spliced on the ends of the Towrope ; using the Blind-Cord's labelled breaking-strain to figure out the number of turns around the Rings before tying off. Because we had people at both ends, we were a bit zealous about it, the Tug Pilot and the Rogallo Pilot both had mechanical Release Cables, most Hangies had their mechanical Release on the top of the A-Frame, at one end of a Bridle going through the Tow-Ringwith the other end this off to a Slip-knot on the Chest of the Pilot - most of whom carried Hook-Knives as a last resort (!)... And the Weak-Links were for Wind,-Shear, Clear-Air Turbulence, and Nose-Up Pitch Departures... My Party Trick was to check the Rig, hook up the Towrope, Radio to the Tug Pilot that everything was set to go...; and then after they lifted off I was to command the Tug to "Release Release RELEASE !" Any time the Rogallo had 40° or more of Bank, and was heading Away from the Towrope...; At which point they could not Shift enough Weight Far enough..., to overpower the Towrope's pull (285 Lb Static Thrust...). They were "Locked Out" of the Control Circuit, by Physics - and by the time the Tug Pilot reacted and the load came off the Tow ; they were banking between 60° & 90°, when suddenly their Kite began to behave obediently in Roll again - and they paid us $10 to try again. We might have broken a dozen Weak-Links in 500 Tows, and our Outfit never hurt any of the Customers...(!). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !
Button button, where to put the button😜 Nice job bro.👍🏻
😂😂😂 True story! Thanks! We'll see how the final product turns out - and how it works!!
So I am big dumb. I had the wings installed backwards/upside down. They are there to help the birdie fly higher in the slipstream compared to the original paraglider birdies. Instead mine was trying to fly as low as possible. Whoops!
Well that was an informative and educational video. Thanks
I do my best haha!
Cool paint job. Early CAP.
Sure is! We're working to spread the good word about CAP's WW2 contributions. 😊

Ok?
slip indicator😅
Technically inclinometer is the correct term, but yeah, slip indicator. My brain just wouldn't connect the dots in the moment. 🤣 I usually just call it the ball!
Really cool. Is the battery built in? How long does it run? How do you charge it?
Yep, battery is built in. They say it has about an 8 hour run time, but my Cub only has a 3 hour run time so I haven't tested the full battery life yet! 🤣 That said I flew about an hour and a half today and barely dented the battery. The 12V plug on the far right is used for charging, I have a separate power brick that plugs into that port and charges the battery. I will likely be doing another video soon showing the internals when I modify it to remove the push to talk switch and add in some more USB ports.
@@CoastalPatrolCub Wow, awesome. Love it.
Cool
Thanks!
Its even got the yellow strip to indicate its live
Correct! All for show, though.

That's all you need 😊
Yep!
dont need much😂
How much?
Is it just me or is flying vintage taildraggers more fun than a stolen go-kart? That grass looks amazing. We cause similar trouble every chance we can: th-cam.com/video/PZ_1jmpElfM/w-d-xo.html
Absolutely!! The grass is a private strip near our home base whose owner let's us pop in whenever we want. Beats the heck out of pavement!
That's not Shannon. That's not even Ireland.
Turns out there's more than one Shannon. 😉 KEZF.
We are living ina yellow biplane in a yellow biplane :D
Excited to see it flying!
Working on more videos soon!
