Rebels and Icons: Hollywood's Outlaw Stars of the '60s
The 1960s saw a rise in celebrity antics and manly recklessness, and it seemed that bad behavior rose to an art form. Hollywood's bad boys - Brando, Burton, Mitchum, McQueen, and Beatty - inspired awe and envy with their larger-than-life exploits. Their on-screen personas were inspiringly masculine, and the public was eager to believe that the flesh-and-blood men were too. Steve McQueen's obsession with speed, Marlon Brando's brawling, and Warren Beatty's womanizing were just a few examples of the entertaining private lives these iconic rebels led, in addition to their entertaining movies.

    I find it interesting that Connery, John Wayne, and Humphrey Bogart were the only actors who never cared about being seen in public without a hairpiece. They were very secure about their manhood. What is interesting, is that because they did not care it was always discussed in publications, because it wasn't a secret and the press understood that it wasn't; therefore they could mention it understanding that it wasn't a sensitive issue. On the other hand, the press never mentioned or alluded that certain actors wore a hairpiece, because those actors refused to be seen without a wig, actors such as William Shatner, Burt Reynolds, Jimmy Stewart, John Forsythe etc. It was never discussed because these actors wanted it to be kept secret or just not to be mentioned.

    Regarding this topic an interesting thing to note is that Connery’s normal hairpieces couldn’t stand the rigors for the underwater scenes. Special hairpieces were developed by Joseph Paris of New York. Paris experimented with different materials that were durable and would look natural in these shots.

    • @richardzenith5231
      @richardzenith5231 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What underwater scenes are you referring to? In some of the underwater scenes in Thunderball he did not wear a hairpiece, because his hair was noticeably thinner, but he had hair.

    • @briantepper509

      @@richardzenith5231 I’m referring to all of the underwater sequences. He had several customized toupees created by Joesph Paris for the various underwater sequences. By 1963-‘64 Connery had fairly significant male pattern hair loss. Did you see any underwater scene in Thunderball where the top of Connery’s head is 3/4 missing hair past his widow’s peak? Did you notice any shots from the back of Connery’s head where he’s showing significant baldness. No. That’s because of Mr. Paris’s magic.

    • @richardzenith5231
      @richardzenith5231 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@briantepper509 I think you're mistaken. As I said, Connery did not wear a toupee in the underwater scenes in Thunderball. His hair seems thinner underwater, because he's not wearing a hairpiece, but it's not that noticeable because he wasn't bald at that time. I mentioned this to refute what the narrator claimed in the video. If he had a customized toupee as you claim his hair would not have seemed thinner. Also, in Dr. No, Connery's first Bond, he's crawling through some kind of air duct and a huge wave of water crashes over him and through his hair from behind. His hair is completely disheveled and he just combs it back with his hand. He was not wearing a. hairpiece in that scene; it's quite obvious because if he was it would have fallen off.

      @@richardzenith5231 Richard, I’m not mistaken. I did research on Thunderball that was published in 007 Magazine in the 1980’s. Within was an interview with Joesph Paris & accompanying photographs. However, you’re free to believe what you want. Wishing you a great week!

    Very poorly researched article. Connery started wearing a hair piece from Goldfinger onwards, for the first two Bond films it was his own hair, the hair and make up department disguised his thinning hair with products so that it looked fine on camera. He was not as bald as a badger, there is newsreel footage of him arriving at the Paris premiere of Goldfinger, he is not wearing a hair piece, it is his own thinning hair, you can see his crown is very thin and the top of his head is quite thin, but he is by no means bald , it looks okay, the crowd there did not seem to even notice. Sean Connery never wore a hair piece off screen and in some films such as The Hill and The Offence he doesn't wear one at all and so you can see how his own hair line actually looks at that time, he is thinning but he is not bald. Please do some better research before talking nonsense.

      @@scottnelson5691 Yes, that might be true, but he wasn't bald as the narrator proclaims in the video. Connery never wore a hairpiece in public and at the premiere of his movies, but very few people could tell the difference. In the under water scenes in Thunderball he did not wear a hairpiece and nobody could notice the difference. We would have had he been bald as the narrator keeps inaccurately repeating. .

    Stephen Stills handed success and fortune to Crosby and Nash. Why, I will never know. Crosby and Nash aren't even in the same category as Stills. All that Crosby, Stills and Nash was a waste of time for Stills. Stills would have been so much more productive without ever messing with them. Stills made stars out of them, including Neil Young. Nash was the luckiest.

    I knew a guy years back who attended one of these shows. He said it was a train wreck. "We rolled up on the scene. Outside two distinct groups of people were milling about. There were the Monkee fans: teenyboppers all, some with parents in tow. Then there were the Hendrix fans: hippies, bikers and junkies for the most part, blasted out of their minds and itching for some of that spanish castle magic. I was sure something ugly would happen. The bikers were sniffing at the teenyboppers like sharks with blood in the water. The boppers had no idea who Hendrix was and had no patience for anything but the Monkees, screaming all the while. No great love of the Monkees from 'our" side of things either. We came to hear Hendrix play, not some kids yelling at the air". He left after the open. Wouldn't you?

    It was Spring of 1966, not 1967, that Jimi was playing at the Cafe Wah in NYC with Jimmy James and The Blue Flames. He'd become friends with a young folky guitarist/singer on the NYC coffee house circuit named Peter Tork (pre-Monkees). Chas Chandler came by while fullfilling his last U.S. tour with The Animals and told Jimi he wanted to manage his act after being so blown away by his guitar antics. He arranged for Jimi to move to London in Oct. '66 and helped put together the Jimi Hendrix Experience soon after. Hey Joe was recorded as a single two or three weeks after forming. A couple or three months later they toured Europe with Cats Stevens, Engelbert Humperdinck and The Walker Brothers (the headliner). In June 1967 they made their U.S. debut at the Monterey Pop Festival, after Paul McCartney recommended Jimi and The Experience to John Philips (one of the key organizers). The rest is accurate on yhe video.
